Time spent in a bookstore can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book-lover or merely you are there to buy as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find a shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive "dust-jacket" is irresistible(不可抗拒的), although this method of selection ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather dull book. You soon become engrossed in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spend far too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment- without buying a book, of course. This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a book-shop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can wander around such places to your heart"s content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with inevitable greetings "Can I help you, sir?" You needn"t buy anything you don"t want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished browsing(浏览). Then, and only then, are his services necessary. Of course you may want to find out where a particular section is, but when he has led you there, the assistant should retire carefully and look as if he is not interested in selling a single bok. You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of books in a bookshop. It is very easy to enter the shop looking for a book on ancient coins and to come out carrying a copy of the latest best-selling novel and perhaps a book about brass-rubbing-something that had only slightly interested you up until then. This sort of thing can be very dangerous. Apart from running up a huge account, you can waste a great deal of time wandering from section to section. |

3. According to the passage, what will happen in a good bookshop? |
A. Nobody will take notice of you. B. You will feel as if you were in a music shop. C. You will find yourself undisturbed and satisfied with your browsing. D. The assistant will greet and treat you in a very friendly way. |
4. Picking up books that slightly interest you can be dangerous because ________. |
A. you may forget about the book you plan to buy B. it costs you too much money and time C. it makes you break your appointment D. you have to give up the best-selling book |

Why do so many of us watch birds with great interest? Perhaps the easiest answer is that birds seem to be the commonest, most attractive and easiest observed wildlife around us. No matter where you are, at home, on a mountain-top, in mid-ocean or deep in a city, there are birds around for you to watch. When you go birdwatching, you should always make sure that your clothes are suitable for the weather and for the habitat you are visiting. As a general rule, it is better to pack a little too much clothing than risk getting cold and wet. In really hot weather, a hat of some sort is sensible. For cooler weather, a practical outfit would be jeans, a roll-neck sweater. Don"t worry about the equipment while birdwatching. It is perfectly possible to see and enjoy birds without any special equipment, but a whole new world opens up to you once you have your first binoculars. Distant birds stop being little dots against the sky or water, and take on shapes and colours, and feathers of bird will have a real beauty of their own. Binoculars allow you to identify birds correctly, and give you a wonderful chance to spy on them going about their daily lives. However, never look directly at the sun using binocular, because direct sunlight can hurt the eye. Using binoculars is one way to bring birds closer to you, but another way of improving your birdwatching is to get nearer to them. If wild creatures don"t know you are close to them, they will continue to behave naturally, and perhaps pass close by you. Fortunately, birds have no sense of smell-so we don"t have to worry about the wind blowing our scent to them and frightening them. But all birds have good eyesight, much better than ours. Birds also have good hearing: their lives and their ability to find food depend on these senses. So what does the birdwatcher need to do? Always move about quietly, do not give the birds advance warning of your arrival or they will move away. Do your best to avoid sudden movement. Always remember to put the birds" interests first. When you have finished looking, don"t just stand up and walk away, scaring birds in all directions.
1. The underlined word "binoculars" refers to __________. A. something that can protect your eyes B. glasses used for looking at distant object C. books on birds of different shapes and colours D. special equipment for birdwatcher to keep warm
2. Why does the birdwatcher have to move quietly? A. Because birds don"t like to make any noise. B. Because birds are unable to see slow movement. C. Because birds can smell man"s scent if he moves quickly. D. Because birds may hear the sound of the sudden movement.
3. According to the passage, what does a birdwatcher need to do? A. Keep a certain distance from birds B. Bring a little more clothes with him C. Behave naturally while watching birds D. Take interest in the birds he is watching |

A person may have an idea about himself that will prevent him from doing good work. He may have the idea that he is not capable (能胜任的) of it. A child may think he is stupid because he does not understand how to make the most of his mental faculties(机能), or he may accept another person"s mistaken estimate(评价) of his ability. Older people may be handicapped(阻碍) by the mistaken belief that they are incapable of learning anything new because of their age. A person who believes that he is incapable will not make a real effort, because he feels that it would be useless. He won"t go at a job with the confidence necessary for success. He is therefore likely to fail, and the failure will strengthen his belief in his incompetence. Alfred Adler, a famous doctor, had an experience which shows this. When he was a small boy he got off to a poor start in arithmetic. His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic, and told his parents what she thought in order that they would not expect too much of him. In this way, they too developed the idea, "Isn"t it too bad that Alfred can"t do arithmetic?" He accepted their mistaken estimate of his ability, felt that it was useless to try,and was very poor at arithmetic, just as they expected. One day Adler succeeded in solving a problem which none of the other students had been able to solve. This gave him confidence. He rejected (refused) the idea that he couldn"t do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. His newfound confidence encouraged him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. He now worked with interest, determination and purpose, and he soon became extraordinary good at arithmetic. This experience made him realize that many people have more ability than they think they have, and that lack of success is as often the result of lack of knowledge of how to apply one"s ability, lack of confidence, and lack of determination as it is the result of lack of ability.
1. Why might a person be prevented from doing good work? ________. A. Because he thinks he is old enough to make the most of his mental facilities B. Because he accepts another person"s mistaken estimate of his ability C. Because he has the idea that he is incapable of doing everything D. Because he believes in what other people think of him
2. A person who believes in his low ability will ________. A. spare no efforts to do things B. fail to go at a job but never lose heart C. change to learn other course instead of mathematics D. show complete lack of confidence
3. As a boy, Alfred Adler was poor at arithmetic because ________. A. he lost his self-confidence B. he was weak in thinking C. his parents expected too much of him D. his teacher had no confidence in herself
4. Which of the following is the most important factor to Alder"s success?________ A. Spirit and experience B. Interest and self-respect C. Confidence and determination D. Purpose and knowledge
5. Alder"s experience made him realize that ________. A. people are not as capable as they think B. people can be more capable than they think C. lack of confidence leads to failure D. lack of ability results in lack of determination
