It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families that he is considered the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters. "My dear Mr. Bennet," said his lady to him one day, "have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?" Mr. Bennet replied that he had not. "But it is," returned she, "for Mrs. Long has just been here, and she told me all about it." Mr. Bennet made no answer. "Do you not want to know who has taken it?" cried his wife impatiently. "You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it." This was invitation enough. "Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs. Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England; that he camedown on Monday in a chaise to see the place, and was so much delighted with it, that he agreed with Mr. Morris immediately; that he is to take possession before Michaelmas, and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week." "What is his name?" "Bingley." "Is he married or single?" "Oh! Single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls! " "How so? How can it affect them?" "My dear Mr. Bennet," replied his wife, "how can you be so tiresome! You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them." "Is that his design in settling here?" "Design! Nonsense, how can you talk so! But it is very likely that he may fall in love with one of them, and therefore you must visit him as soon as he comes." "I see no occasion for that. You and the girls may go, or you may send them by themselves, which perhaps will be still better, for as you are as handsome as any of them, Mr. Bingley may like you the best of the party." |

Feeling lonely can make you sick.Doctors have long known that loneliness is associated with heart troubles, viral infections, and higher death rates. What they didn"t know is how this feeling causes illness. A study in the September issue of the online journal Genome Biology suggests that loneliness actually affects the very core of our bodies-our genes. In a small population of patients, researchers surveyed more than 20,000 genes using DNA skills to compare how the genes of lonely and nonlonely individuals express themselves in molecular (分子) processes and, ultimately, in personal health. They found that gene expression is different at 209 sites in chronically lonely people and that many of those changes fit a pattern of elevated immune activation, inflammation (炎症), and depressed response to infection."We now have a molecular framework for understanding the relationship between social experience and physical health, "explains the study"s lead author, Steve Cole. The study found that loneliness decreases the response of some body receptors, cutting off the immune control and anti-inflammatory effects of the stress-related hormone that also helps regulate the conversion of carbohydrates (碳水化合物) to energy. The depressed response of the stress-related hormone concurs with the known effects of loneliness and provides a potential target for treatment. "This study-the first to link feelings with gene changes-is in some sense groundbreaking, "says Emma Adam, an associate professor at Northwestern University."It fills in the black box." According to John Cacioppo, an author of the study and a psychologist from the University of Chicago, the work suggests that loneliness is a warning sign, much like physical pain."This very process of feeling bad because of disconnection contributes to what it means to be human, "he says."It makes us care for other people and want to reconnect when we"re disconnected." |

There are two factors which determine an individual"s intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with.Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual-the sort of environment in which he is reared. If an individual is handicapped environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable. The importance of environment in determining an individual"s intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate foster homes.Peter was reared by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities.Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence.Mark"s I. Q.was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level. |

A. can be predicted at birth B. stays the same throughout his life C. can be increased by education D. is determined by his childhood |

The neglected baby is crying alone. The young man, suffering from a lack of sleep, threatens with suicide (自杀). The marriage fails because of the husband"s obsessive (沉迷的) behaviour. Is this just another story of social breakdown in the modern age?Not really. But they are the effects of a real social problem--Internet Addiction (上瘾). Or, Internet Addiction disorder. There have been few long-term studies of this very 21st century illness. But the extension of the obsession is obvious from the popularity of one game alone:"Halo 2". It"s a first-person shooter developed by Budgie Studios for the Xbox video game console.By early 2005,1 million players worldwide had clocked up an amazing 100 million hours on the game. China has about 94 million regular Internet users.Of these, a survey suggested,4.4 million are teenagers so addicted to it that they neglect everything else. Video gamers who have gone too far display symptoms similar to those of alcohol and drug abusers. "The real world meant nothing to me when I was fully involved with online games.I lost track of time, space, hunger, pain, everything, " explained Liu Pinyi, a 19-year-old college dropout. She has had treatment in Beijing for her addiction. What makes it similar to drugs is that online game addicts also develop a chemical imbalance in the brain.Gaming stimulates (刺激) the production of a chemical compound that produces euphoric or pleasant feelings. When they"re away from the screen, their levels of chemicals produce this" high" drop. And the addict suffers feelings of anxiety and headaches. Experts say young people are attracted to video games partly because they are thrust right into the centre of the action. This allows them to overcome a lack of confidence which people at that age can often suffer from. But, addiction is not the only problem.A Harvard University survey of 81 video games in 2004 found that 98 percent contained violence for 36 percent of the total playing time. China strengthened controls on computer games again this week, with the Ministry of Culture banning nine online games. The ministry said it would also force game operators to technically filter out content that could cause addiction. |

To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called an 12,which moves a bar(or curtain)down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate 13 the reader finds comfortable,in order to "stretch" him.The accelerator forces the reader to read fast,14 word-by-word reading, regression and subvocalization, practically impossible. At first 15 is sacrificed for speed. But when you learn to read ideas and concepts you will not only read faster,16 your comprehension will improve. Many people have found 17 reading skill greatly improved after some training.18 Chalice Au,a business manager, for instance, his reading rate was a reasonably good 172 words a minute 19 the training, now it is an excellent 1378 words a minute. He is delighted that how he can 20 a lot more reading materials in a short period of time. |

By far the most common difficulty in study is simple failure to get down to regular concentrated work. This difficulty is much greater for those who do not work to a plan and have no regular routine of study. Many students muddle along(无计划地进行), doing a bit of this subject or that,as the mood takes them,or letting their set work pile up until the last possible moment. Few students work to a set timetable. They say that if they did work out a timetable for themselves they would not keep to it,or would have to change it frequently, since they can never predict(foresee)from one day to the next what their activities will be. No doubt some students take much more kindly to a regular routine than others. There are many who shy away from a self-controlled weekly timetable, and dislike being tied down to a fixed program of work. Many able students state that they work in cycles. When they become interested in a topic they work on it attentively for three or four days at a time. On other days they avoid work completely. It has to be admitted that we do not fully understand the motivation to work. Most people over 25 years of age have become used to a work routine, and the majority of really productive workers set aside regular hours for the more important areas of their work. The "tough-minded" school of workers doesn"t fully accept the idea that good work can only be done naturally, under the influence of inspiration. Those who believe that they need only work and study as the fit takes them have a mistaken belief either in their own talent or in the value of "freedom".Freedom from control and discipline (纪律)leads to unhappiness rather than to "self-expression" or "personality development".Our society insists on regular habits, timekeeping and punctuality, and whether we like it or not,if we mean to make our way in society,we have to meet its demands. |
