People in the United States honor their parents with two special days:Mother"s Day, on the second
Sunday in May, and Father"s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love
and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible (有责任感的)
citizens. They give love and care. These two days make us think about the changing roles of mothers
and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with child care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother"s Day people wear
carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many
people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead
visit the cemetery(墓地).On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They
often have outdoor barbecues for Father"s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their
own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought  in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is
important, but it is "the thought that counts". Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries,
telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.

A. Parents bring up children.

D. Parents pass away before children grow up.
2.What do you think "florists" do?
A. They sell flowers.
B. They make and sell bread.
C. They offer enough room for having family parties.
D. They sell special gifts for Mother"s Day and Father"s Day.
3.Which do you think is right about "carnation"?
A. It has only two kinds of colors.
B. It refers to the special clothes people wear on Mother"s Day or Father"s Day.
C. It"s a kind of flower showing love and best wishes.
D. People can wear carnations only on the second Sunday in May.
4. What do you know from the passage?
A. Mother"s Day and Father"s Day are both in May.
B. Fewer women worked outside the home in the past.
C. Not all the children respect their parents
D. Fathers are not as important as mothers at home.
5. On Mother"s Day and Father"s Day,      .
A. people usually have family parties
B. everyone goes to visit the cemetery
C. children always go to parents" home
D. hand-made cards are the most valuable gifts
                                                         Make the most of college
Dear Daughter,
As we drove off from Columbia, I wanted to write a letter to you to tell you all that is on
my mind.
First, I want to tell you how proud we are. Getting into Columbia is a real testament of
what a great well-rounded student you are. You should be as proud of yourself as we are.
Your college years will be the most important of your life. It is in college that you will
discover what learning is about. This will be the period where you go from teacher-taught to
master-inspired, after which you must become self-learner. So do take each subject seriously,
and even if what you learn isn"t critical for your life, the learning skills you acquire will be
something you will cherish forever.
Follow your passion in college. Take courses you think you will enjoy. Don"t be trapped by
what others think or say, but make up your own mind.
Most importantly, make friends and be happy. College friends are often the best in life. Pick
a few friends and become really close to them - pick the ones who are genuine to you. Don"t
worry about their hobbies, grades, looks or even personalities.
Start planning early - what would you like to do? Where would you like to live? What would
you like to learn? I think your plan to study fashion is good, and you should decide where you
want to be, and get onto the right courses.
Whether it is summer-planning, or coursework planning, or picking a major, or managing your
time, you should take control of your life. I will always be there for you, but the time has come for
you to be in the driver"s seat - this is your life, and you need to be in control. Being in control feels
great. Try it, and you"ll love it!
College is the four years where you have:
The greatest amount of free time
the first chance to be independent
     the most flexibility(灵活性)to change
the lowest risk for making mistakes
So please treasure your college years - make the best of your free time, become an independent
thinker in control of your destiny, be bold to experiment, learn and grow through your successes
and challenges.
May your years at Columbia be the happiest of your life, and may you blossom into just what
you dream to be.
                                                                                                                             Love,

A punctual person is in the habit of doing a thing at the proper time and is never late in
keeping an appointment(约会).
The unpunctual man, on the other hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time.
He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name. A lost thing may
be found again, but lost time can never be regained. Time is more valuable than material things.
In fact, time is life itself. The unpunctual man is forever wasting and mismanaging his most
valuable asset(财产)as well as others". The unpunctual person is always complaining that he
finds no time to answer letters, or return calls or keep appointments promptly. But the man who
really has a great deal to do is very careful of his time and seldom complains of want of it. He
knows that he cannot get through his huge amount of work unless he faithfully keeps every piece
of work when it has to be attended to.
Failure to be punctual in keeping one"s appointments is a sign of disrespect towards others.
If a person is invited to dinner and arrives later than the appointed time, he keeps all the other
guests waiting for him. Usually this will be regarded as a great disrespect to the host and all other
guests present.
Unpunctuality, moreover, is very harmful when it comes to do one"s duty, whether public or
private. Imagine how it would be if those who are put in charge of important tasks failed to be
at their proper places at the appointed time. A man who is known to be habitually unpunctual is
never trusted by his friends or fellow men.
1. According to the passage, the main reason that a person is always unpunctual is that____.
A. he has more work to do than other people
B. he is always in a hurry when he works
C. he doesn"t care much about time
D. he always mismanages and wastes his time
2.What does the underlined word mean?_____
A. in time
B. be late
C. on time
D. at times
3. According to the third paragraph, when you are invited to dinner, you should arrive there ____.
A. after other guests have arrived
B. at the appointed time
C. before all other guests
D. after the host has got things ready
4. Which of the following statements best describes the harm of unpunctuality?______
A. If you are an unpunctual person, you cannot be in charge of any important task.
B. Unpunctuality may bring about heavy losses for both public and private affairs
C. If your friends know that you are unpunctual, they may not see you again.
D. Unpunctuality may make you miss a lot of appointments and lose friends.

We"ve all been hurt by another person at one time or another. This pain causes problems. It not only
causes us to be unhappy, but can ruin relationships, distract (使分心) us from work and family and other
important things, make us unwilling to open up new things.
We need to learn to let go. We need to be able to forgive, so we can move on and be happy.
Forgiveness does not mean you erase(忘却;抹去)the past, or forget what has happened. All it means is that you are letting go of the anger and pain, and moving on to a better place.
It"s not easy, but you can learn to do it.
Think about the advantages and disadvantages. Think of all the problems this pain causes you, and
realize you need to change. Then think of the benefits of forgiveness—how it will make you happier, free
you from the past and the pain, and improve your relationships and life in general.
Try to put yourself in that person"s situation. Try to understand why the person did what he did. What
could he have felt as he did it, and what did he feel afterward? How does he feel now? You aren"t saying
what he did is right, but are trying to understand instead.
Understand your responsibility. Try to figure out how you could have been partly responsible for what
happened. This isn"t to say you"re taking all the blame, or taking responsibility away from the other person,
but to realize that we are not victims (受害者) but participants in life.
Allow peace to enter your life. As you focus on the present, try focusing on your breathing. Imagine each breath going out is the pain and the past, and imagine each breath coming in is peace, entering you and filling you up.

London has a new magazine. But it"s not printed on paper. Everyone who has a television can receive
it because it is on TV.
In order to read this magazine you have to have a decoder. Each page of it is numbered, so you only
have to dial the number to choose which subject you want to read about. There"s a wide
choice- everything is included from cooking to the latest sports news.
If you want to read the news, the first thing you have to do is to turn to the index page which has an
easy-to-remember page number, 100 for example. Then you start choosing what you want to read. The
news is on pages 101 to 109, so you push out the numbers and the news appears written across your
screen. Perhaps you want to go out in the afternoon, so you press 181, and a brightly colored weather
map appears on the screen. But the weather is terrible so you decide to go shopping and dial 162 for a
list of the week"s best bargains. But should you drive or take the train ? To answer the question you only
have to press 189 for the traffic report. It"s very simple to use. But probably the best thing about the
service is that it"s being updated all the time. Journalists type new material directly onto the screen and
whole pages of the magazine can be replaced in minutes.
London has already had three services. One, transmitted(传输)by ITV, is called ORACLE, while the
other two, on BBC, are called CEEFAX, because they let you see facts. Although CEEFAX and
ORACLE have been operating for some time, they have not been well publicized. BBC engineers do not
think that their idea will ever replace books and newspapers because they can be taken with you
everywhere. But many people agree that this is a breakthrough as great as the invention of printing, which
could change not just our reading habits but our whole way of life.
