Photographs are everywhere. They decorate (装饰) the walls of homes and are used in stores for sales of different goods. The news is filled with pictures of fires, floods, and special events. Photos record the beauties of nature. They can also bring things close that are far away. Through photos, people can see wild animals, cities in foreign lands, and even the stars in outer space. Photos also tell stories. Reporting the news through photos is called photojournalism. At times photojournalists tell their stories through a single picture. At other times, they use a group of pictures to tell a story. Each picture is like a chapter in a book, which can do more than record the facts. It can also be a strong force for social change. Jacob Riis was among the first photojoumalists. He took pictures of parts of New York City where the poor lived. Riis believed that poverty(贫穷 )caused crime, and he used photos to help him prove his point. A few years later, the photos of small children working in factories by Lewis Hine shocked the public. Hine"s pictures helped bring about laws to protect such children. Hundreds of pictures may have to be taken in order to get one or two really good photos. It takes science to have the photo come out clearly and art to make a photo that has a good design and expresses feeling. Photojournalists make an actual record of what they see. A photo, however, can be both a work of art and an actual record. It can record an important event as a beautiful or exciting picture. As historical and artistic documents (文献), photos can become more important over time. Today photojournalists still have their pictures appear in newspapers and magazines. They also publish (发表) them in books and on the Internet. |

Most people say" yes" much more readily than" no". A friend is moving house this weekend and would like some help, and you agree. But, what you really wanted was relaxing at home for a couple of quiet days,or a roommate spends the whole weekend playing video games and wants to borrow your homework for"reference". But,you"ve just finished it after working hard for a whole day. Many people say" yes" to this kind of requests. They tend not to consider their own interests and feelings, and are often angry with themselves afterwards. Saying" no" requires courage and considerable practice. " Everyone wants to be liked. " says Gabriele Steinki,a German psychologist. "Saying"no"risks losing the affection of the person asking for the favor. Or even a job. "The result is that many people say"yes"just for keeping the peace. But experts say this is regrettable. Anyone should have the right to say" no". In fact, rejecting a request can even help to stabilize a relationship because it expresses real affection. But,for peop"le accustomed to agreeing every request,it"s very distressing to say" no". Most people believe that if they say" no" ,they"ll lose the affection of the person. But the affection is important to them. This way of thinking can be replaced by this:"If he only likes me because I always do what suits him, then the price of this affection is too high in the long term. " When people say " no", Steinki advises giving the reasons calmly until the person gets the message. |

Sitting is an art that isn"t getting passed along. People these days feel as though they have to be doing something. If they are not working, they are jogging,or playing tennis or golf,or taking courses to improve their minds or bodies-or they are parked in front of the TV. Sitting in front of the TV isn"t sitting-it"s watching. People used to sit a whole lot. They would walk down the street or drive down the road, and there they would be,out on the doorsteps, sitting. They could go down to the store and sit on the bench out in the summer or around the fire in the winter. There were sitting benches out in the town square. At the garage, there were straight-backed chairs. There among the oilcans and tires and spare parts, they could kick back and sit. Houses used to have sitting rooms, where the grown-ups would go after Sunday dinner. Mom and Dad, Grandpa and Aunt Ruby would sit and digest(消化) the fried chicken and talk about Aunt Ethel"s illness, and how well the minister did today. Outside, the children would play, and the afternoon could pass by in a comfortable haze (悠闲的氛围) . That sort of thing looks like doing nothing. A recharging battery (正充电的电池) doesn"t look as if it"s doing anything either. Sitting restores your soul. If you want to enjoy a truly full life, don"t just do something-sit there. |
