Do you know how to prepare for and survive a major earthquake? According to Department of Conservation scientists, it is important to have the right answer to that question. How to Be Prepared Electricity, water, gas and telephones may not be working after an earthquake. The police and fire departments are likely to be tied up. You should be prepared to fend for yourself for at least three days, preferably for a week. You"ll need food, water and so on. It"s also a good idea to decide ahead of time how and where your family will reunite if separated during a quake. You might choose an out-of-the-area friend or relative that family members can call to check on you. _____ If you"re indoors, stay there. Get under a desk or table. The kitchen is a particularly dangerous spot. If you"re in an office building, stay away from windows and outside walls and do not use the elevator. If you"re outside, get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you. If you"re driving, move the car out of traffic and stop. Avoid parking under or on bridges or overpasses. After an Earthquake Check for fire. If you smell gas, shut off the main gas valve (阀). If there"s sign of damage to electrical wiring, shut off the power at the control box. If the phone is working, only use it in case of emergency. Avoid driving if possible to keep the streets clear for emergency vehicles. Be careful that things may fall out of cupboards when the door is opened, and also that chimneys can be weakened and fall with just a touch. Listen to the radio for important information and instructions. Remember that aftershocks, sometimes large enough to cause damage in their own right, generally follow large quakes. If you leave home, leave a message telling your friends and family your location. |

Indonesia is a dangerous country to call home. It lies above several active plates (板块)with many fire-breathing volcanoes around. The eruption of a volcano and the shaking of an earthquake this week is just one reminder of Indonesia"s burning base. Indonesia, consisting of 17,500 islands, sits between the world"s most active region, the Pacific Ring of Fire, and the world"s second most active region, the Alpide belt. Being situated between them means the islands experience some of the strongest earthquakes and most powerful volcanic eruptions known on Earth. The Pacific Ring of Fire is the world"s greatest earthquake belt according to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), because of its series of fault (断层) lines covering about 25,000 miles from Chile through Japan and Southeast Asia. Earthquakes usually occur along faults, which are breaks in the rocky plates. About 90 percent of all the world"s earthquakes, and 80 percent of the world"s largest earthquakes, strike along the Pacific Ring of Fire. About 17 percent of the world"s largest earthquakes and 5-6 percent of all quakes occur alone the Alpide belt. In 2009 alone Indonesia had 10 earthquakes greater than magnitude (震级) 6.0, according to the USGS. Monday"s 7.7-magnitude earthquake that caused a 3-meter-high tsunami, killing at least 113 people, occurred when the Australian and Sunda plates struck into each other. One rocky plate took a dive below the other, resulting in an earthquake The 9.1-mangitdue 2004 quake and Indian Ocean tsunami killed about 230,000 people in quite a few countries. Below Indonesia, the Eurasian Plate, Australian Plate, Sunda Plate and Pacific Plate meet together. |

What Makes Anxiety Happen? Well, because we can"t outlaw tests, we might as well figure out how to ease test anxiety. Anxiety is a feeling a person gets when he or she expects something stressful to happen. 1 A kid might think, "What if I forget everything I know?" or"What if the test is too hard?" Too many thoughts like these don"t leave much room in your mind to concentrate on remembering the answers to the test questions. People with test anxiety can also feel stressed out by the physical reaction and think things like "What if I throw up?" or"Oh no, my hands are shaking." These thoughts can get the person even more upset, making the anxiety even stronger. Now, the person feels worse and is even more distracted and unable to concentrate. What Can You Do? You might be reading this article and saying, "Hey! That sounds just like me!" If so, we"re glad you recognize that this happens to you. 2 Here are some ways to do that; ☆Ask for help Talk to your mom or dad, your teacher, or your school guidance counselor (辅导员). Just talking to someone about test anxiety can make you feel better. Describe what happens to you when you"re taking a test and these people can help you figure out some solutions. For instance, learning study skills can boost your test-day confidence. ☆ 3 Pay attention in class. Do your homework. ☆Expect the best 4 Say to yourself,"I studied and I"m ready to do my best." ☆Block bad thoughts Watch out for any negative messages ("I"m no good at taking tests" or"I"m going to freak out if I get a bad grade"). These thoughts can make anxiety worse and make it harder for you to do well in the test. ☆Accept mistakes Everyone makes mistakes and be more forgiving of your own mistakes, especially if you prepared for the test and are set to do your best. ☆Take care of yourself You"ll feel your best if you get enough playtime, sleep, and nutritious food. This is important all the time, but be extra-sure you get all three the day before a test. ☆Breathe better Did you know that breathing exercises can help calm you down? (Just try not to take in too much air because it might make you feel dizzy.) Here is how to do it. 5 Do this two to four times and you just might breathe easier the next time you"re taking a test! |
A. Breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose, and then breathe out slowly through your mouth. B. Be prepared C. Take food and nutrition into consideration. D. Once you have prepared, think positively. E. Focusing on the bad things that could happen can make a kid feel more worried. F. He might often think about what would happen to him. G. Now you can start taking steps to lessen your test anxiety. |

A. what do people with an intellectual disability need? B. What is intellectual disability? C. How do people with an intellectual disability talk? D. What are the forms of intellectual disability? E. What causes intellectual disability? F. How do you talk to a person with an intellectual disability? |
_________ 1. People with intellectual disability form one of the largest single disability groups in a community. Intellectual disability refers to a general slowness to learn and function within society, and the identification of intellectual disability is usually based on an assessment of a person"s performance in a variety of tests. An individual"s level of performance, as assessed, can change with time and circumstances. With skilled training and opportunity for development, people with intellectual disability have much greater potential for acquiring skills and for participation in community life than previously had been thought possible. _________2. In many western societies, five categories of intellectual disability have traditionally been used in order to indicate the perceived degree of difficulty an individual has with learning. All five may occur in either children, adolescent or adult, and show as mild, moderate, severe, profound or multiple intellectual disabilities. _________ 3. For the majority of intellectual disabilities, there is no identifiable cause but there are some causes that are well documented. They include: brain damage at birth due to lack of oxygen-prolonged labor during childbirth; brain damage before birth due to factors such as rubella, drug or diet-related problems; damage after birth due to illnesses such as encephalitis or accident; hereditary defects in the genes; abnormal chromosome count resulting in, for example, Down Syndrome. ________ 4. Like everyone else, people with an intellectual disability need a rewarding job, a satisfying place to live and a good social life. But they may need extra support to achieve these things. Good support services are based on the principle of normalization-which means enabling people to be part of the community like everyone else. ________ 5. With the introduction of the intellectually disabled into communities, there is a need to promote awareness of communication. Although many people may have little experience in talking with an intellectually disabled person, there are common guidelines that can simplify the interaction. Firstly, it is useful to remember that people with disabilities have feelings. Speaking in the same friendly manner as you would to anyone else is also recommended. Being prepared to wait a little longer for replies during a conversation with an intellectually disabled person would undoubtedly benefit the exchange. |

[1] Everyone wants something in life, love, money, success...Yet too many people fail to achieve their goals, and nearly all of them are for the same reason. [2] It"s true that terrible things do happen to people during their lives, though no fault of their own, which may make them feel upset. Generally speaking, however, getting what you really want out of life is just a matter of the following three simple steps. [3] Firstly, you have to decide what it is you want the most. But do not make a list of wishes; try to focus on one thing at a time. If you"re not sure about where you want to go, you"d better think it over first and not hurry to perform. [4] Secondly, ___________. This will be your map for getting from"where you are now" to "where you want to go". You know what you want, and what steps you are going to take to get it. For example, if you want a better job, start with a skills assessment and maybe some extra training. Then you"ll need to sell yourself and your skills either to your present employer or to a new one. [5] Other goals will require a bit more thought. Some will really get you lost without a clue of how to get there. Not to worry, though, books, biographies and such, can be of great help. [6] The third and final step is to carry it out. Do what you planned. Take the steps you outlined on your road map and keep going on all the time. If you run into some people who are against you, simply ignore them. [7] Never give up the goal. Keep pushing. Whatever you do, do not lose heart before you have what you desire in your hands. Never think that you can"t turn your dream into a reality. |
