You wake up and the weather is all wet. What are you going to do today? Here are four ideas for you
to try when it"s raining cats and dogs.
     Puppet (木偶) show
You can create your own puppets with things your parents already have around the house. First, you"ll
need some old socks or brown paper bags. Then get them decorated. Give your puppets names and funny
voices. You might want to make up a special story for them. Maybe one puppet lost his way home. Maybe
another puppet has superman powers. To make your show even better, use a cardboard box as a stage.
Build a castle Ask your parents for some old sheets, blankets, or comforters. Spread them over chairs or
other furniture to create a top-secret castle. Bring a flashlight, a good book to read, and maybe even a snack.
     Dress-up time
Both boys and girls can have fun trying on old clothes. Ask your parents to let you try on old hats,
jewelry, shoes, and clothes. Do you want to be a doctor? You can pretend it in a doctor coat. Or maybe you
see yourself as a movie star. Ask your mom for her old dance dresses. Don"t forget the earrings and high
heels!
     Say thanks
Birthdays and holidays are chances for us to thank people who love us. But it can be a special treat to
get a gift or a card on an ordinary day. Think of the people who make you happy and then come up with
a way to show them your care. Use your arts and craft supplies to create a special card. Or ask your
parents to help you make cookies as a gift for that special person. You will be delivering sunshine on a
rainy day! 1. According to the passage, these activities can happen on ______. A. sunny days
B. rainy days
C. cloudy days
D. windy days 2. When working on the puppet show, children can ______. A. train their own imagination
B. learn to perform shows on stage
C. know how to deal with others
D. find new ways of creating puppets 3. Which of the following words can be used to describe the kids" castle?A. Boring
B. Hot
C. Quiet
D. Noisy4. What can we learn from the passage? A. You can pretend to be a doctor by trying on your parent"s clothes.
B. You can only give a gift or a card to show your care on birthdays or holidays.
C. You can use your own dance dresses to dress up.
D. You can make some gifts to show your care for special persons.

subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at
mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at
office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may
not have any specially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not
all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not
required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts
and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your
work. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If
you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else,
you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers.
You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become
interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle
tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness
than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an
important part of your background. You should not be apologetic(认错的) about it but instead recognize that
you will have a chance of a fresh start at work. 1. What is the passage mainly about? A. The importance of working hard at school.
B. Choosing a career according to one"s strengths.
C. How to face one"s weakness.
D. The value of school work. 2. The writer thinks that a student have a part-time job is probably _____. A. a good way to find out his weak points
B. one of the best ways of earning extra money
C. of great use for his work in the future
D. a waste of time he could have spent on study 3. From the passage we learn that if a student"s school performance is not good, he _____. A. should pay more attention to learning skills and developing abilities
B. will be regretful about his bad results
C. may also do well in his future work
D. should restart his study in school 4. The underlined phrase "be all thumbs" (in para 3) probably means"_____". A. be clumsy at doing things
B. be skillful in doing things
C. be not interested in certain things
D. be easily bored in doing things

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and
other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways
in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things. The pleasant parts of
conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine, the fine weather. They enjoy all the
cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they
are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend(hurt)many people,
and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy
persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing (批评) and being disliked is perhaps taken
up by imitation (模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may
be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning
may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep
sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with
more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them
into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them
success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public
objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should
change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves
and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact (接触) with them. Otherwise, it can
be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
1. The phrase "sour the pleasure of society" most nearly means ______.
A. have a good taste with social life
B. make others unhappy
C. tend to scold others openly
D. enjoy the pleasure of life
2. We can conclude from the passage that ______.
A. we should pity all such unhappy people
B. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life
C. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness
D. unhappy people can not understand happy persons
3. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should ______.
A. prevent any communication with them
B. show no respect and politeness to them
C. persuade them to recognize the bad effects
D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes

A lot of us lose life"s tough battles by starting a frontal attack-when a touch of humor might well enable
us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly
after receiving an ultimatum (最后通牒) about being late on the job. Although there was a good reason for
Sam"s being late-serious illness at home-he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn"t work any
longer. His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.
Yes, the boss was. Sam entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room; everyone
was hard at work. Sam"s supervisor came up to him. Suddenly, Sam forced a grin and stretched out his
hand. "How do you do!" he said. "I"m Sam Maynard. I"m applying for a job, which, I understand, became
available just 35 minutes ago. Does the early bird get the worm?"
The room exploded in laughter. The supervisor clamped off a smile and walked back to his office. Sam
Maynard had saved his job-with the only tool that could win, a laugh.
Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives.
It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying "no", criticizing, getting the other fellow to
do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it"s the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to
discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians
on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum.

3. The phrase "clamped off" in Paragraph 3 means ____.
A. tried to hold back
B. tried to set
C. charged

D. Humor is the most effective way of solving problems.
