TUVALU, a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean, has asked for help as it fears it will be swallowed up by the sea. Storms and huge waves are a constant threat and none of Tuvalu"s nine little islands is more than five meters above sea level, Salt water is already entering the country"s drinking water supply, as well as damaging plants that produce fruit and vegetable. _1_ _2_. Venice, a historic city in Italy best known for its canals, has sunk about 24 cm over the past 100 years. Experts say that it will have sunk another 20-50cm by 2050. A century ago, St. Mark"s Square, the lowest point in the city, floodedd about nine times a year, Nowadays, it happens more than 100 times. While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it stands, Tuvalu"s rising sea level is caused by global warming. The average global temperature has increased by almost 0.5 centigrade degrees over the past century; scientists expect it to rise by extra 1-3 degrees over the next 100 years. Warmer weather makes glaciers melt, adding more water to the ocean. The warmer temperatures also make water expand, so it takes up more space, causing the sea level to rise. The sea level has risen about 10-25 cm in the last 100 years. _3_. Through burning coal, oil and gas, people have been increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as CO2. This adds to the power of the greenhouse effect, making the planet even warmer. Many scientists believe that, if the warming is not stopped, there will be huge climate changes. _4_. _5 , the sea will swallow up millions of homes and the world will be flooded with "climate refugees" looking for somewhere to live. |
A. The main cause of global warming is human pollution B. Should this come true C. Without urgent help, the country"s days are numbered. D. But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea E. The sea level could rise by one meter this century. F. people face a lot of pollution. G. much has been done about our planet . |

In a world with limited land, water and other natural resources, the harm from the traditional business model is on the rise. Actually, the past decade has seen more and more forests disappearing and the globe becoming increasingly warm. People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words, we should keep the earth healthy while using its supply of natural resources. Today, sustainable development is a proper trend in many countries. According to a recent study, the global market for low-carbon energy will become three times bigger over the next decade. China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy revolution. It is now trying hard to make full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains. In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil, which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown by more than 50%. Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets. First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions and targets for saving and reusing energy. Besides, stronger arrangement of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can avoid the huge expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those expenses can accelerate the change from traditional model to a sustainable one. The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of growing population within the limits of this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries. |

A. it consumes natural resources B. it makes the world warmer C. it brings severe damage to forests D. it makes growth hard to continue |
2. What can we infer from Paragraph 2? |
A. China lacks wind and solar energy. B. China is the leader of the low-carbon market. C. Palm oil is made at the cost of valuable forests. D. High-speed trains are a low-carbon development. |
3.To fully develop the low-carbon markets, governments can ______. |
A. cut public expenses B. encourage energy conservation C. develop public resources D. forbid carbon emission |
4. What is the main purpose of the passage? |
A.To advocate sustainable development. B.To compare two business models. C.To predict a change of the global market. D.To introduce a new business model. |

Recent research has claimed that an excess of positive ions in the air can have an ill effect on people"s physical or psychological health. What are positive ions? Well, the air is full of ions, electrically charged particles, and generally there is a rough balance between the positive and the negative charged. But sometimes this balance becomes disturbed and a larger proportion of positive ions are found. This happens naturally before thunderstorm, earthquakes when winds are blowing in certain countries. Or it can be caused by a build-up of static electricity indoors from carpets or clothing, or from TV sets, duplicators or computer display screens. When a large number of positive ions are present in the air many people experience unpleasant effects such as headaches, fatigue , excessive anger, and some particularly sensitive people feel sick or even suffer mental disturbance. Animals are also affected, particularly before earthquakes, snakes have been observed to come out, rats to flee from their burrows, dogs howl and cats jump about unaccountably. This has led the US Geographical Survey to fund a network of volunteers to watch animals in an effort to foresee such disasters before they hit vulnerable areas such as California. Conversely, when large numbers of negative ions are present, then people have a feeling of well-being. Natural conditions that produce these large amounts are near the sea, close to waterfalls or fountains, or in any place where water is sprayed, or forms a spray. This probably accounts for the beneficial effect of a holiday by the sea, or in the mountains with streams or waterfalls. To increase the supply of negative ions indoors, some scientists recommend the use of ionisers. They claim that ionisers not only clean and refresh the air but also improve the health of people sensitive to excess positive ions. Of course, there are the detractors, other scientists, who dismiss such claims and are skeptical about negative/positive ion research. Therefore people can only make up their own minds by observing the effects on themselves, or on others, of a negative rich or poor environment. After all it is debatable whether depending on seismic readings to anticipate earthquakes is more effective than watching the cat. |
1. What is an ion according to the passage? |
A. It"s a charged particle. B. It"s basically static electricity indoors. C. It"s a balance between the positive and negative charged. D. It"s an ill effect on people"s physical and psychological health. |
2. What effect does exceeding positive ionization have on most of the people? |
A. They will throw up. B. They will be sick and tired of life. C. They may feel rather bad-tempered. D. They may feel they are out of their mind. |
3. A high negative ion count is likely to be found . |
A. in a mountainous area. B. by a water spray in a garden. C. close to a slow-flowing river. D. near a pound with a water pump. |
4. What is the author"s attitude towards the use of ionisers? |
A. Neutral. B. Opposed. C. Supportive. D. Ambiguous. |

Nowadays more and more people are concerned about their health, but how to keep healthy? Different people may give different answers to this question. In my opinion, it is essential to do the following. First, it is absolutely necessary to take some exercise at regular time every day. Research shows that getting plenty of exercise can make the heart beat faster and the lungs work harder. This strengthens the heart, reduces the chance of heart attack, and helps lower blood pressure. That"s why more and more people are becoming active in various kinds of sports and exercise. Every morning many people get up early and take much exercise. Some play ball games while others run, jog, walk or dance to music. In the afternoon, there are also many people keen on sports. Through sports and exercise, people become healthier and stronger. Medical researchers have proved that what people eat affects their health. They advise people to eat more fruit and vegetables and less meat such as beef and pork because meat contains more fat than poultry (家禽) and fish. Fat can build up in the arteries (动脉), block the flow of blood, and cause a heart attack or stroke (中风). Getting rid of bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol is also an important way to keep healthy. Smoking and drinking alcohol injure one"s health a great deal, and therefore should be given up. Unfortunately few people follow this advice.

Studies find that hamburgers and fries are generally offered in serving sizes two to five times larger than the appropriate meal size. Researchers find we usually clean our plates no matter how high they"re piled, even if we already feel satisfied. See the suggestions below to further master the fine art of sizing up 估量) your snacks and suppers. Extremely large portions are one possible reason Americans continue getting fatter even as the percentage of our total calories from fat has gone down in recent years. Fortunately, portions are relatively simple to control because it"s easier to count cookies than calories or grams of fat. Pre-picture portions. Use familiar objects to picture how much you should eat of a food before you pick up your fork or spoon. For example, a half cup of low-fat granola is about the size of your fist. A half cup of low-fat ice cream equals half an orange. Use a smaller dish. This tip might sound ridiculous, but it works. First and mostobvious is that you can"t put as much food on, say, a salad plate. But psychologically, you"re just not as prone to eat as heartily and quickly if your plate will be empty in 45 seconds. Have raw vegetables at every meal. Raw cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, and peppers have few calories and lots of nutrients. A plate of them in the middle of the table almost always gets eaten up, cutting down appetite for the more calorie-dense meat. Start your meal with soup. Studies show that a bowl of soup at the start of the meal reduces overall meal consumption, since they are lowest in calories and highest in nutrients. Manage your fork. After every bite of food, put your fork down. Don"t pick it up until you have thoroughly chewed and swallowed the previous bite. The goal is both to slow down your eating and to eat less. Remember: Your body needs 20 minutes of digestion before it sends signals to your brain that you are no longer hungry. | Helpful hints on how to get a handle on the how-much factor | Facts | Hamburgers and fries served in restaurants are generally two to five times the 1______of the proper ones.
