阅读理解。     Recent research has claimed that an excess of positive ions in the air can have an ill effect on people"s
physical or psychological health. What are positive ions? Well, the air is full of ions, electrically charged
particles, and generally there is a rough balance between the positive and the negative charged. But
sometimes this balance becomes disturbed and a larger proportion of positive ions are found. This
happens naturally before thunderstorm, earthquakes when winds are blowing in certain countries. Or it
can be caused by a build-up of static electricity indoors from carpets or clothing, or from TV sets,
duplicators or computer display screens.
When a large number of positive ions are present in the air many people experience unpleasant effects
such as headaches, fatigue , excessive anger, and some particularly sensitive people feel sick or even
suffer mental disturbance. Animals are also affected, particularly before earthquakes, snakes have been
observed to come out, rats to flee from their burrows, dogs howl and cats jump about unaccountably.
This has led the US Geographical Survey to fund a network of volunteers to watch animals in an effort to
foresee such disasters before they hit vulnerable areas such as California.
Conversely, when large numbers of negative ions are present, then people have a feeling of well-being. Natural conditions that produce these large amounts are near the sea, close to waterfalls or fountains, or
in any place where water is sprayed, or forms a spray. This probably accounts for the beneficial effect of
a holiday by the sea, or in the mountains with streams or waterfalls.
To increase the supply of negative ions indoors, some scientists recommend the use of ionisers. They
claim that ionisers not only clean and refresh the air but also improve the health of people sensitive to
excess positive ions. Of course, there are the detractors, other scientists, who dismiss such claims and
are skeptical about negative/positive ion research. Therefore people can only make up their own minds
by observing the effects on themselves, or on others, of a negative rich or poor environment. After all it is
debatable whether depending on seismic readings to anticipate earthquakes is more effective than watching the cat.1. What is an ion according to the passage?A. It"s a charged particle.
B. It"s basically static electricity indoors.
C. It"s a balance between the positive and negative charged.
D. It"s an ill effect on people"s physical and psychological health.2. What effect does exceeding positive ionization have on most of the people?A. They will throw up.
B. They will be sick and tired of life.
C. They may feel rather bad-tempered.
D. They may feel they are out of their mind.3. A high negative ion count is likely to be found           .A. in a mountainous area.
B. by a water spray in a garden.
C. close to a slow-flowing river.
D. near a pound with a water pump.4. What is the author"s attitude towards the use of ionisers?A. Neutral.
B. Opposed.
C. Supportive.
D. Ambiguous.

First, it is absolutely necessary to take some exercise at regular time every day. Research shows that
getting plenty of exercise can make the heart beat faster and the lungs work harder. This strengthens the
heart, reduces the chance of heart attack, and helps lower blood pressure. That"s why more and more
people are becoming active in various kinds of sports and exercise. Every morning many people get up
early and take much exercise. Some play ball games while others run, jog, walk or dance to music. In the
afternoon, there are also many people keen on sports. Through sports and exercise, people become
healthier and stronger.
Medical researchers have proved that what people eat affects their health. They advise people to
eat more fruit and vegetables and less meat such as beef and pork because meat contains more fat than
poultry (家禽) and fish. Fat can build up in the arteries (动脉), block the flow of blood, and cause a heart
attack or stroke (中风).
Getting rid of bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol is also an important way to keep healthy.
Smoking and drinking alcohol injure one"s health a great deal, and therefore should be
given up. Unfortunately few people follow this advice.

One reason Americans eat so many calories is that we tend to eat large portions (分量). Studies find
that hamburgers and fries are generally offered in serving sizes two to five times larger than the appropriate meal size. Researchers find we usually clean our plates no matter how high they"re piled, even if we already
feel satisfied. See the suggestions below to further master the fine art of sizing up 估量) your snacks and
suppers.
Extremely large portions are one possible reason Americans continue getting fatter even as the
percentage of our total calories from fat has gone down in recent years. Fortunately, portions are relatively
simple to control because it"s easier to count cookies than calories or grams of fat.
Pre-picture portions. Use familiar objects to picture how much you should eat of a food before you pick
up your fork or spoon. For example, a half cup of low-fat granola is about the size of your fist. A half cup
of low-fat ice cream equals half an orange.
Use a smaller dish. This tip might sound ridiculous, but it works. First and mostobvious is that you
can"t put as much food on, say, a salad plate. But psychologically, you"re just not as prone to eat as
heartily and quickly if your plate will be empty in 45 seconds.
Have raw vegetables at every meal. Raw cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, and peppers have few
calories and lots of nutrients. A plate of them in the middle of the table almost always gets eaten up,
cutting down appetite for the more calorie-dense meat.
Start your meal with soup. Studies show that a bowl of soup at the start of the meal reduces overall
meal consumption, since they are lowest in calories and highest in nutrients.
Manage your fork. After every bite of food, put your fork down. Don"t pick it up until you have
thoroughly chewed and swallowed the previous bite. The goal is both to slow down your eating and to
eat less. Remember: Your body needs 20 minutes of digestion before it sends signals to your brain that
you are no longer hungry.

Kids" health: Four steps for fighting stress
Everybody gets stressed from time to time.  1  Some ways of dealing with stress
- like screaming or hitting someone - don"t solve(解决)much. But other ways, like talking
to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.
Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:
(1)Get support. When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk
to a trusted adult, such as a parent or other relatives.    2  They might have
had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.
(2)Don"t take it out on yourself. Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take
it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that"s not a good idea. Remember that there are
always people to help you. Don"t take it out on yourself. 3
(3)Try to solve the problem. After you"re calm and you have support from adults and
friends, it"s time to get down to business.  4  Even if you can"t solve it all,
you can solve a piece of it.
(4)Be positive. Most stress is temporary (暂时的). Remember stress does go away,
especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it.
These steps aren"t magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make
your way through a tough time, you"ll help yourself feel better even faster.   5
A. Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.
B. Notice your friends" feelings and find a way to help them.
C. Different people feel stress in different ways.
D. Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.
E. You need to figure out what the problem is.
F. And don"t forget about your friends.
G. Then, find a way to calm down.

On April 24th , another natural disaster - the oil spill(泄露)in the Gulf of Mexico , happened .
Millions of dollars have been used to help stop the spill and to clean up the animals , beaches , and
land spoiled by the oil . Unfortunately , when many of these chemicals are used , more damage is
caused to the environment , especially to lives in the sea .
But governments seem to accept the risk of transporting millions of tons of oil by ship every day
so that we can fill up our cars and drive around and cause even more environmental damage .
Interestingly , the biggest companies in the world produce cars , and the next biggest supply the
gasoline to make them run .
Of all of today"s environmental disasters , an oil spill may actually be one of the least serious .
Although oil is poisonous , it is a natural material . In the end , it breaks down naturally . In 1967
the tanker Torrey Canyon sank off the Scilly Isles near the coast of England and spilled 120,000
tones of oil into the ocean . If you go there today , you will find it hard to see any sign that it ever
happened .
However , we should be thinking more about reducing our dependency on oil . Governments
should be encouraging research into new technologies , such as cars run by solar power, electricity ,
hydrogen , and so on . Much of this research , in the past , was stopped by the oil , gas , and coal .
If the world"s millions of cars were 10% more efficient(高效的), we would need many fewer tankers
crossing the oceans each year . If this happened , the risks of oil spills would be reduced , and the air
we breathe would be cleaner and fresher , too .

1. What is the passage mainly talking about ?
A. Oil spills pollution
B. What oil pollution is
C. Oil tanker accidents

2. How does the author support the idea that oil spills are not as serious as people believe ?
A. By giving a description
B. By making an argument
C. By giving an example
D. By drawing a diagram(图表)
3. What does the underlined word " risk " in Paragraph 2 refer to ?
A. Transportation depending more on oil
B. Poisonous oil breaking down naturally
C. Millions of tons of oil spilling into the sea
D. More environmental damage being caused
4. Which suggestion is made for reducing oil tank according to the passage ?
A. We should build safer tankers in the near future
B. We should develop new technologies to cut oil use
C. Tankers should not be allowed to sail near the coastlines
D. Countries should build more oil pipelines under the sea
5. Where can you read this article ?
A. In a story book .
B. In a science magazine .
C. In a novel

Special Bridges Help Animals Cross the Road
----- Reported by Sheila Carrick
Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.
Most people know this joke. But recently, some people have been much more concerned with how
the grizzly bear and mountain lion can cross the road.
Millions of animals die each year on U.S. roads, the Federal Highway Administration reports. In fact,
only about 80 ocelots, an endangered wild cat, exist in the U.S. today. The main reason? Road kill.
"Ecopassages" may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars. They are paths both over
and under roads. "These ecopassages can be extremely useful, so that wildlife can avoid human conflicts," said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Conservation Society.
But do animals actually use the ecopassages? The answer is yes. Paul Beier of Northern Arizona
University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an ecopassage that went under a highway. This
showed that the lion used the passage.
Builders of some ecopassages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting trees
on and around them. Animals seem to be catching on. Animals as different as salamanders and grizzly
bears are using the bridges and underpasses.
The next time you visit a park or drive through an area with a lot of wildlife, look around. You might
see an animal overpass!
1. The writer uses the example of "ocelots" to show that_________.
A. wild animals have become more dangerous
B. the driving conditions have improved greatly
C. the measure for protecting wildlife fails to work
D. an increasing number of animals are killed in road accidents
2. From the news story, we know an ecopassage is_________.
A. an underground path for cars
B. a fence built for the safety of the area
C. a bridge for animals to get over a river
D. a pass for animals to cross the road
3. When the writer says that animals seem "to be catching on", he means_________.
A. animals begin to realize the dangers on the road
B. animals begin to learn to use ecopassages
C. animals are crossing the road in groups
D. animals are increasing in number
4. The writer asks visitors and drivers to look around when traveling because_________.
A. wild animals may attack cars
B. wild animals may jam the road
C. they may see wild animals in the park
D. they may see wild animals on ecopassages
