阅读理解。     Many animals recognize their food because they see it. So do humans. When you see an apple or a piece
of chocolate you know that these are things you can eat. You can also use other senses when you choose
your food. You may like it because it smells good or because it tastes good. You may dislike some types of
food because they do not look, smell or taste very nice. Different animals use different senses to find and
choose their food. A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while most animals use more than one
sense.
Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating only one type. The
giant panda (大熊猫) eats only one particular type of bamboo (竹子). Other animals eat only one type of food
even when given the choice. A kind of white butterfly (蝴蝶) will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though
there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a more varied diet (多样化饮
食). The bear eats fruits and fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will
be different depending on the season.
Humans have a very varied diet. We often eat food because we like it and not because it is good for us. In
countries such as France and Britain, people eat foods with too much sugar. This makes them overweight,
which is bad for their health. Eating too much red meat and animal products, such as butter, can also be bad
for the health. Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of study in modern life. 1. We can infer from the text that humans and animals _____. A. depend on one sense in choosing food
B. are not satisfied with their food
C. choose food in similar ways
D. eat entirely different food 2. Certain animals change their choice of food when _____. A. the season changes
B. the food color changes
C. they move to different places
D. they are attracted by different smells 3. We can learn from the last paragraph that _____. A. food is chosen for a good reason
B. French and British food is good
C. some people have few choices of food
D. some people care little about healthy diet

Ali is from a Middle Eastern country. He now stays in the USA. He smokes a lot of cigarettes (香烟) every
day. He has smoked for nine years. Ali says," I tried to quit (放弃) smoking in my hometown, but it was
impossible. My brothers smoke. All my friends smoke. At parties and at meetings, almost all the men smoke.
Here in the United States, not as many people smoke. It will be easier to change my habit here."
Many smokers are like Ali: they want to stop smoking. The smokers know that smoking is bad for their
health. They know it can cause cancer and heart disease. But it is difficult for them to give up smoking because cigarettes have a drug in them. The drug is nicotine (尼古丁). People who smoke a lot need nicotine.
When a person first begins to smoke, he usually feels terrible. The nicotine makes him sick. In a few days,
the smoker"s body is used to the nicotine, and he feels fine. Later, the smoker needs nicotine to keep feeling fine. Without nicotine, he feels bad.
It is very hard to quit smoking, and many people who quit will soon smoke again. At a party or at work they will decide to smoke "just one" cigarette. asthm a(哮喘)attacks. A recent attack happened on October 2, after he pushed himself too hard in physica
l exercise. Running, power walking, jogging and push-ups took their toll. When Jeremy got home an hour
or two later, he was out of breath. He needed to use a nebulizer (喷雾器), a machine that helps send
medicine quickly to the lungs, to get his breathing back to normal.
Asthma attacks like Jeremy increase in September and October. More than six times as many asthma
sufferers who are primary-school age need hospital treatment in the fall as in the summer.
Experts believe many factors can cause back-to-school asthma. Kids get together in close spaces, they
start passing viruses around. A viral infection (感染) can cause an asthma attack. There are also certain fall
allergies (过敏症) that can cause attacks. Exercise is another common cause of an attack. Besides, the stress
of school can make asthma worse.
Parents can play a big role in helping kids with asthma start the school year right. Dawne Gee"s
10-year-old son, Alexander, has had asthma since he was a baby. Before the school year starts, she tells
school workers in writing about her son"s asthma.
The Gees live in Kentucky, which has passed laws allowing students to carry their asthma medication
(药物治疗)with them at school. Alexander"s mom makes sure he has his inhaler (人工呼吸器) with him
when he goes to school and that he keeps it on hand at all times. In Delaware, where Jeremy lives, kids are
allowed to carry their inhalers at school.
The American Lung Association says that about 6.2 million American children suffer from asthma.

things that schools can do to help students control their asthma1. The passage mainly deals with _______. A. how to prevent and treat Asthma

In today"s world, almost everyone knows that air pollution and water pollution are harmful to people"
health. However, not all the persons know that noise is also a kind of pollution, and this is harmful to
people" health, too.
People who work and live under noisy conditions usually become deaf today. However, scientist believe
that 10 percent of workers in Britain are being deafened by the noise where they work. Many of the workers
who print newspapers and books, and who weave cloth become deaf. Quite a few people living near airports
also become deaf. Recently it was discovered that many teenagers in America could hear no better than
65-year-old persons, for these young people like to listen to pop music and pop music is a kind of noise,
Besides, noise produced by jet planes or machines will make people ill or even drive them mad.
It is said a continuous noise of over 85 decibels can cause deafness. Now the government in many
countries have made laws to control noise and make it less than 85 decibels.

problems.

Directions: Read the following passage, Answer the questions according to the information given
in the passage.
March 22nd every year has been the World Water Day since 1993. Everyone knows that over 70% of our planet is covered with water, but do you know that only 3% of the water is fresh and less than 1% of this fresh water is available for human use?
     Water shortage
The World Bank reports that 80 countries now have water shortages, while 40% of the more than 2 billion people, have no access to clean water. Fresh water is such a life-or-death issue(问题) in many parts of the world that every eight seconds a child dies from drinking dirty water.
     How to save water
Turn off the tap while you brush you teeth in the morning and before bedtime, and you can save up to 8 gallons of water! That adds up to more than 200 gallons a month, enough to fill a huge fish tank that holds 6 small sharks!
Keep your shower under 5 minutes long. In fact, a 5-minute shower uses more water than a person living in poverty in a developing country uses in an entire day.
Fix the leak. If your toilet has a leak, you could be wasting about 200 gallons of water every day. That would be like flushing your toilet more than 50 times for no reason!
We each share responsibility for the sustainable management of our water resources, which means using less water at home, in the workplace, at school, on holidays, on the farm,… everyone, everywhere, every time.
1. When did the first World Water Day take place? (no more than 5 words)
_____________________________________________________________________________
2. How many suggestions does the writer give us to save water? (1 word)

3. What example does the writer give us to show fresh water is a life-or-death issue?

4. What"s the purpose of writing this passage? (no more than 12 words)
