Three years ago, I had a job in a retail store (零售店). I 21 to talk to everybody and know what was going on in their 22 . I remember a girl who started 23 there a few months after me. We seldom talked but we always 24 each other and smiled. She always smiled in a really happy way 25 one day when we got to work in the 26 department. She smiled as if she was the 27 girl in the world. I went up to her and asked, “What’s wrong with you?” She answered, “Why?” I said, “I could feel you’re very 28 , but you’re always trying to 29 it.” Her mouth just dropped as if I had 30 her deepest secret, so we started talking. She told me 31 she was feeling unhappy and why she was trying to 32 that nothing was wrong. Time went by and we became good friends. She’d always tell me I had 33 her life in so many ways. Today that girl is one of my best 34 . I really don’t know what I would do 35 her. She has been there for me in every 36 way a friend could be. What I’m trying to say is that you never know 37 you’re helping yourself. I helped this girl never knowing that at the same time I was helping myself by finding a 38 friend. So the next time you see a 39 and he needs someone who will 40 to him, wait and let him say what he wants to say. You never know, you might just end up helping yourself.

When I was 17, I read a quote: “If you live each day as if it were your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made a(n) 36 on me,and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the 37 day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to 38 something. Remembering that I’ll be 39 soon is the most important tool to help me make the big choices in life, 40 almost everything—all expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure—just falls away in the face of death, 41 only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to 42 . You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart. No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to 43 don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever 44 it, because Death is very likely to be the single best invention of Life. It clears out the old to 45 for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will 46 become the old and be cleared away. Your time is 47 , so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice.Everything else is secondary.

When it comes to success in business and success in life, there are few qualities as important as confidence. People naturally have different levels of confidence. Some have a higher level of confidence than others do, but even those whose confidence is lacking can learn to build their level of confidence and reach their most important goals. Increasing self confidence is one of the most common reasons people give for seeking the help of psychologists and other professionals. One of the many places where a greater level of confidence is useful is in the workplace. We all know how difficult it can be, for instance, to ask the boss for a raise. This process can be extremely difficult for those who lack confidence in their own abilities. After all, if you are unsure about your own abilities, how will you ever convince your boss that you deserve more money for the work you do? Even if you are not asking for that big raise, having plenty of confidence in your abilities is important to success. If you are certain of your abilities, chances are that those around you, whether they are your coworkers, your colleagues or your superiors, will see that confidence, and that will help to assure them that you are the best at what you do. Being thought of as the person to go to, and being seen as an expert in your chosen field, is naturally very important to success on the job. If you can make yourself the person people go to for guidance and advice, you will help to protect yourself from the ever present danger of downsizing. After all, if you are a recognized expert at the office, you will be regarded as an indispensable member of the team. Having a high level of confidence, after all, does not mean overlooking the places where you could improve. Knowing what you do well and where you need help will help you enjoy increased success and confidence. 小题1:What is the passage mainly about?A.The influence of confidence on one’s life. | B.The importance of confidence to success. | C.The difference of people’s confidence. | D.The judgment on one’s confidence. | 小题2:Psychologists and other professionals can offer help to those _____.A.who think their goals are hard to reach | B.who expect to give guidance to others | C.who want to ask the boss for a raise | D.who dream to be recognized experts | 小题3:What does the underlined word “indispensable” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?A.important | B.attractive | C.outspoken | D.energetic | 小题4:What message does the author want to express in the last paragraph?A.To overlook one’s disadvantages. | B.To make full use of one’s advantages. | C.To have great confidence in one’s abilities. | D.To make objective evaluations of one’s abilities. |

When you need a job very much, you may end up taking one for which you are over qualified. Although you were initially grateful just to have the work, you now feel bored and depressed. Is there any way to change that? Start by changing your opinion, says Caitlin Kelly, the author of Malled, a book based on her experience as a sales clerk after losing her job in journalism. “Don’t focus on what you’re not getting but what you are getting,” she says. “Be patient and work attentively with a wide range of people. It doesn’t matter what the job is –there are always things you can learn and skills you can develop.” Hilary Pearl, the founder of a coaching firm, says, “Tell yourself the current situation isn’t the end of your career. Don’t overdramatize(过分夸大)the negative aspects but try to view the situation more philosophically: life has a series of stages, and this is one of them. Don’t forget to study even in the worst stage.” Consider that because you’re overqualified, you may be able to learn or do things on the job that might not have been possible in a more demanding position, says Sarah Hathorn, the chief executive of Illustra Consulting. “You could spend your extra time in learning different aspects of the business and teaching others in the organization,” she says. Is it possible to make your work more challenging, even if your job responsibilities aren’t likely to change? Of course, you may seek tasks and responsibilities that force you to learn something new or to work harder. “You may be operating on autopilot(习惯性地)right now, but chances are that people above you are stressed,” Sarah Hathorn says. “Take things off your boss’s plate and let him know which projects or tasks you want to learn more about.” Always express your request positively, saying that you love new challenges, rather than complaining that you’re bored and underused, says Ethun, the president of the Park Avenue Group. In your down time, educate yourself about the company and its industry. “Read corporate information, analyst reports and related news articles,” she says. “If your boss accepts your suggestions, it will make you a more valuable employee.” 小题1:According to Caitlin Kelly, ______.A.one should be willing to do some small things | B.being a salesman is not as important as being a journalist | C.performing your regular duties well is important | D.doing a simple job well will bring you a sense of success | 小题2:What Hilary Pearl intends to express is that ______.A.work is just a stage of our whole life | B.the present job doesn’t matter to us in a long run | C.one should be satisfied with his present situation | D.one should look forward instead of complaining about the present situation | 小题3:The underlined words “take things off your boss’s plate” mean______.A.draw your boss’s attention | B.share your boss’s burdens | C.give your boss useful advice | D.ask your boss for a better position | 小题4: What is the common view about careers of the people mentioned in this passage?A.One should start his career from doing a simple job. | B.One should improve himself and help others as well. | C.One should keep learning new things to improve himself. | D.One should pay much attention to the relationship with the boss. |

Many people influenced various aspects of my life, based on their personal characteristics, accomplishments, and values. I have been fortunate to have had numerous teachers and professors who I respect for their patience and intelligence. There are artists that have inspired me by their natural talents and original creativity. I value many political leaders, who have inspired me by their contributions to society, and their ability to change our futures. But of all the people I have known in my life, the person I admire most is my father. As the youngest girl in my family, I always considered myself to be“Daddy’s little girl”. While I grew up, it always made me sad to see so many of my friends and neighbors without a father or father-like figure around. This helped me appreciate how my father always takes an interest in his children’s lives. In every aspect of my life my father continuously pushes me to excel, so I could accomplish my work outstandingly among my people. Whenever I feel like giving up, or have a question or a concern, I know I can always call on him for advice. From him I have also learned that sometimes you have to put others’ needs ahead of your own, but you should make sure you are not taken advantage of by others. His strength seems to be unbreakable during hard times, and he is extremely determined to accomplish anything he sets his mind on, no matter how tiny it is. I highly respect him for how he stands up for what he believes in, and will never back down. I have always admired his open mind, compassion(同情) for people, and sense of understanding. He is a very reserved(保留的) man, but to everybody’s surprise, he has a great sense of humor, and always knows how to put a smile on the faces of his wife, his children and his friends. Living in his affection and instruction, I am very proud of my father. He also professes (声称) how proud he is of his children, and is still there to support us in whatever we are involved in. 小题1:What is the best title for the passage?A.How my father loved me | B.My father—the person I admire most | C.I am the apple of my father’s eye | D.My father—the one who influenced me most | 小题2:Which of the following could not be used to describe the author’s father?A.Considerate and humorous. | B.Affectionate(慈祥的) and open-minded. | C.Knowledgeable and sociable. | D.Energetic and helpful. | 小题3:Which of the following can best explain the underlined word“excel”?A.Do better than others. | B.Show off. | C.Be cleverer than others. | D.Keep healthy. | 小题4:According to the underlined part, the father was telling the author to .A.try to be good to those who were worth making friends with | B.try to take advantage of those who were friendly to her | C.think about others and help them, so that she could make them serve her | D.think about others and help them, but not to be made use of in a negative way | 小题5:What can we infer about the author?A.She appreciated her father because he solved all the problems for her. | B.She considered her father humorous and was often made to laugh by him. | C.She had pity on the fatherless. | D.She was outstanding in work because her father pushed her hard. |
