George Stephenson was born in 1781.His father was a poor worker.He looked after a steam engine.He worked very hard,but he didn't get enough money to support a family of eight.
George Stephenson could not go to school.He had to start work when he was only eight.For a small boy like him,the work was very hard.After a day's work,he always felt very tired.
When he was fourteen,George became his father's assistant.It took him all his spare time to learn about the engine.
Soon he became a skilled worker,but he still couldn't read and write.He was seventeen years old when he started learning his ABC.Every day after 12 hours' hard work,he walked a long way to take lessons from a young school teacher.On his eighteenth birthday,he wrote his own name for the first time in his life.From then on,he never stopped his studies for a day.
George's hard work brought great results.He invented many things during his life.But the greatest one was the railway locomotive.Today when we watch those beautiful trains flying past,we can't help remembering that son of the poor English worker.It took his whole life to invent this wonderful machine.
