Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you. Well, ni-hao. (Laughter) It is such a pleasure and an honor to be here with all of you at this great university, so thank you so much for having me. I’m here today because I know that our future depends on connections like these among young people like you across the world. That’s why when my husband and I travel abroad, we don’t just visit palaces and parliaments(国会) and meet with heads of countries. We also come to schools like this one to meet with students like you, because we believe that relationships between countries aren’t just about relationships between governments or leaders — they’re about relationships between people, particularly young people. So we view study abroad programs not just as an educational chance for students, but also as an active part of America’s foreign policy(政策). Through the wonders of modern technology, our world is more connected than ever before. Ideas can cross oceans with the click of a mouse. Companies can do business and compete with companies across the world. And we can text, email, Skype with people in the world. So studying abroad isn’t just a fun way to spend a time of learning; it is quickly becoming the key to success in our times. Because getting ahead in today’s workplaces isn’t just about getting good grades or test scores in school, which are important. It’s also about having real experience with the world beyond your borders — experience with languages, cultures and societies very different from your own. Or, as the Chinese saying goes: “It is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.” 小题1:Where did the speaker probably give the talk to the audience?A.In a university. | B.In the Parliament Hall. | C.On the Internet. | D.In a tourist attraction. | 小题2:The passage shows that the world’s future depends on .A.getting good grades | B.traveling abroad | C.connections among young people | D.texts and emails | 小题3:What is the meaning of the underlined word “compete” in Paragraph 3? 小题4:In the speaker’s opinion, what is the key to success in our times?A.Going to a university. | B.Doing more exercises. | C.Studying abroad. | D.Getting good test scores. | 小题5:Where may the passage come from?A.A story. | B.A news report. | C.A scientific magazine. | D.A speech. |

Tips for avoiding traffic jams: The radio has more than just music. Check the local news station for the latest traffic report. Or go online and check traffic cameras before you set out. If there is a jam, you"ll be prepared and can try another route. Take the road less traveled. Although highways may be the most direct route, back (偏僻的) roads can be much less crowded, which can save you from the frustration of the stop-and-go traffic. Rush hour isn"t just a lovely nickname. It means the morning and afternoon traffic lasts for several hours, but they"re still called "rush hour" for a reason - everyone"s on the road and in a hurry to get somewhere. Treat rush hour like bad weather - if you don"t have to go anywhere, stay off the roads. Tips for those unavoidable traffic jams: Don"t break the law. You"ve gone 30 feet in 30 minutes and all of a sudden you see people using the shoulders(紧急停车道). Don"t behave like them. Not only is this illegal, but also there"s a good chance they"ll get caught or cause even more problems. Pay extra attention to zig-zaggers (Z字形行进者). When some people are anxious, they may start changing lanes(车道)every 5 seconds or cut you off, Keep checking your windows and mirrors. for these lane changers. Look for an escape. If it is possible to exit the road safely, do it. Use a GPS unit, and you can change your route mid-trip if needed. Be courteous. Good manners could help you avoid a possible accident. “Homestay is a form of study abroad program. It allows the visitor to rent a room from a local family to better understand the local lifestyle. It also helps to improve the visitor’s language ability,” said a teacher during a school meeting last term, “Students who wish to learn more about foreign cultures or to get foreign experience should join this kind of holiday. I am sure you won’t be disappointed(失望的).” After this special meeting, I always thought about this kind of holiday. Last month, I had a chance at last to go on such a holiday with some of my schoolmates and we went to London, a place where I had wanted to go since years ago. As we were still young, we had a group leader who planned things for us and looked after us. After we got to London, we went to stay with different families. I was lucky that my host family(寄宿家庭) was a white couple who had a daughter about my age. They treated me as a daughter of their family during my stay there. They were interested in me and I learnt a lot of things from them, too.
The holiday was filled with activities every day. After breakfast, a local teacher would come to take us in his car. Then we would have classes or go on a sight-seeing trip to different places of interest like the Big Ben, the London Bridge, and the Buckingham Palace. We would go back to our own homes after the activities. The holiday was a valuable experience for me. I enjoyed every minute of it. Yet, time really flew fast. Three weeks later, we had to leave “home” for Hong Kong. 小题1:In the “homestay” program, a visitor can .A.learn more about holidays | B.understand his culture better | C.improve the language ability | D.take part in foreign meetings | 小题2:The writer had wanted to visit London since .A.the last month | B.years ago | C.the special meeting | D.her stay abroad | 小题3:The group leader should .A.make plans for the family | B.take care of the students | C.stay with different families | D.rent rooms to the students | 小题4:The writer’s host family .A.was very kind to her | B.went sight-seeing with her | C.had two white daughters | D.was interested in her activities | 小题5:From the passage, we know that the writer in London.A.wished to stay a little longer | B.spent three weeks in her “home” | C.had classes in many interesting places | D.helped the teacher take the students in a car |

I played a tennis game against my cousin Ed last week, and I will never forget it. I had played a lot of games before, but it was one of the most games I’ve ever had. When Ed first phoned and suggested we play, I quietly, thinking I was sure to beat him, because I didn’t think Ed could win any games with his fat body. As long as I can remember: Ed’s been the least physically fit member in the family, but strangely of himself. His big stomach has always ballooned out between his T-shirt and trousers. Although the family often joked about that, Ed to buy a larger T-shirt or to lose weight.
