Don"t listen to people who say the young people today often think only of themselves. It"s not true at all.
More and more people in the USA volunteer to spend their school holidays working for others. And they
don"t do it for money. Here are some of their stories.
     Alice Hamilton, 17
I"m going to help the Forest Centre build new hiking paths in the mountains. It"s going to be terrific-I"ll
spend the whole summer living in the tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I"m going to sleep under the
stars. It"ll be a nice sport, and I"ll be able to do something good at the same time.
     Jason Moore,18
This summer, I"m going to volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, low-cost houses and
sell them to families that are not very rich. They"ll teach me what to do, so I"ll help people and also have a
chance to learn how to build houses.
     Trish Anderson,16
I"m going to teach kids who have trouble reading. I"ll work for a program called Reading For Life. Every
day, I"m going to help kids choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher and I love children
and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me. 1.Young people in the USA volunteer to spend _____ helping others. [     ]

a day in front of a TV set. Some children even watch TV for eight or more hours on Saturday. TV
programmes are like books or films. A child can learn bad things from some of them and good things from
others. Some programmes help children to know the news from other part of the world. Some programmes
show people and places from other countries or other times in history. With TV a child doesn"t need to go to
the zoo to see animals or to the sea to see a ship. Boys and girls can see a film, a play or a basketball match
at home. Some programmes can teach children how to cook or how to use tools. It"s interesting to watch
TV, but it is also interesting to read a book or to visit friends. 1.Children often watch TV for _____ a day. [     ]

Some people say Jacky is the best Chinese singer. I don"t think so! Andy is the best.
I went to his concert last year. It was so hard to believe, I almost cried! OK, I did
cry, but that"s because Andy is so handsome!

I don"t agree at all. Andy sounds like every other singer. His voice is nothing
special. On the other hand, Jacky"s voice is different from others, and his songs
are so romantic!

I think they"re about the same. But Andy is really a better actor. I"ve seen almost
all of his movies. Remember the one where he was an airplane pilot, and his plane
crashed near a farm? I love that film!

I also think Jacky is a better singer. I prefer his Cantonese songs. Maybe they
sound better because Cantonese is his first language.

I agree. Jacky"s Cantonese songs are better than his Mandarin (普通话) songs.
(Though, I still like all his songs!)

When you want to go shopping, decide how much money you can spend for new clothes. Think about
the kind of clothes you really need. Then look for those clothes on sale (销售).
There are labels (标签) inside all new clothes. The labels tell you how to take care of your clothes. The
label for a shirt may tell you to wash it in warm water. A sweater label may tell you to wash by washing
in cold water. The label on a coat may say"dry clean only." Washing may ruin (损坏) this coat. If you do
as the directions (说明) say on the label, you can keep your clothes looking their best. Many clothes today
must be dry cleaned. Dry cleaning is expensive. When buying new clothes, check (核实) to see if they
will need to be dry cleaned. You will save money if you buy clothes that can be washed.
You can save money if you buy clothes that are well made. Well-made clothes last longer. They look
good even after they have been washed many times. Clothes that cost more money are not always better

expensive clothes.

Eating habits (习惯) are different in different countries. The Chinese have a saying "Eat good things for
breakfast, eat a big meal for lunch, but eat less at dinner." Many Americans agree that one should start the
day with a good breakfast, but their ideas about lunch and dinner are different.
Most Americans only give themselves a short time for lunch. So they eat a small lunch. After work they
will have more time to eat a big dinner. Also a quiet dinner at home with all the family talking about their day
is a way to take a good rest after a long, hard day of work.
Eating at restaurants is also different. In China, people like to talk and laugh while eating.Very often you
can hear people talking and laughing loudly, and they are just having a good time. In America it is not like this.
They want a quiet place where they can eat a good meal far away from the noises of the outside world. If
someone is talking too loudly, the manager of the restaurant will look at him or her angrily. If some people
are talking too loudly, the manager (经理) of the restaurant may come out and ask them to be quiet.

Parents are the closest people to you in the world. They love you just because you are you. And they
would do anything for you. Like a lot of middle school students, Zhuang Shuxia has a problem. She and
her parents don"t get on well. "I really want to be my Daddy"s little girl. But it feels like he just doesn"t
understand. He talks at me and doesn"t listen." said Zhuang, a Grade 9 student in Hangzhou. Do you and
your parents also have problems? Well, why don"t you all take a walk and have a talk on Monday? It"s the
International Day of Families. On May 15, people around the world give thanks for good things about their

love to talk about it.
     3. Listen to them carefully, and look them in the eye.
