Our factories and homes burn coal and oil. Every year we have forest fires somewhere. Many scientists believe that the weather is changing. The earth will perhaps be warmed by about 7℃ at the South Pole (极) and the North Pole. The ice will be melt (融化). The sea level (平面) will rise by about 7 meters. As a result, water will cover cities like London, Tokyo and New York. Some ports (港口) and towns along the coasts will disappear under water. Some other scientists think that the dust, smoke and pollution from coal, wood and oil fires will block out (封闭) the ultraviolet rays (紫外线). Then the earth will become colder and great sheets of ice will cover Europe and North America. When chemicals in the air mix with rain, we have acid (酸) rain. Acid rain can bring us great harm. It destroys (破坏) forests and kills life in lakes and rivers. People are beginning to see how serious the problem is. They find it important to work with nature instead of against it. They are trying to save the earth in many different ways. But one of the most important things to do is to make people understand that saving the earth is saving ourselves. |

From June 1 this year, plastic bags were no longer free in stores and supermarkets. What do people use to hold their shopping now? What do they think of the new rule? The students of Beijing 101 Middle School did a survey to find the answer. With the help of the Sony Company, they designed a questionnaire (问卷) and made their own shopping bags. On June 5, the students gave the bags away to people in the street. Anyone who wanted a free bag had to fill in a questionnaire. Li Xuan, 14, one of the students said that most of the people were middle-aged and elderly. They said they were "optimistic (乐观的)" about the future of shopping bags. The government is b 5 many wind farms and solar power stations in the deserts. Of course, w 6 a long time, China will continue using the coal. At the same time, the government has been making l 7 to punish those people who dare to destroy the environment. Besides, some s 8 have suggested that greening the deserts is more important than developing new forms of energy. Their l 9 research shows that 80% of the CO2 in the atmosphere comes from land-use. As we know, China hasn"t a 10 a balance between the green lifestyle and the economic growth, but we are on the way. We"ll take more actions to reduce the greenhouse gas emission. |

FIFTEEN YEAR-OLD Liu Xuyang said he has more than 30 pairs of shoes. But some are old. He doesn"t want them any more. Where should these old shoes go? To the garbage or to be recycled? This is how Liu began to care about old shoes. He shared his thoughts with his classmates at Beijing No. 35 Middle School, Luo Hao and Yang Mengwei. The three then decided to do some research. They found out that old shoes can pollute the environment if not recycled properly. Earlier this month, their research paper won second prize in the Beijing Youth Science and Invention Competition. The three first spent two weeks designing a questionnaire on how people deal with old shoes and how the shoes are treated. They gave over 100 questionnaires to the public, to shoemakers, garbage stations and recycling stations. Doing the survey, They found that on average (平均), a family throws away 5.17 pairs of shoes each year. That means millions of old shoes are thrown away a year around the country. However, most old shoes are not treated properly, according to the students. "Usually, the old shoes are just burnt or buried (填埋) with other garbage," said Luo. Most of the shoes are made of chemical materials. If they are burnt or buried, they can give off gas (气) or other things that pollute the air and rivers, said the students. They suggest there should be big boxes in cities for people to put old shoes in. The shoes could then be taken to recycling stations to be treated. On the other hand, the shoemakers, said the students, could use more environment-friendly material to make shoes. |
