. Is there anything more important than health? I don’t think so. “Health is the greatest wealth(财富),” wise people say. You can’t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill. If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor. The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice. Speaking about doctor’s advice, I can’t help telling you a funny story. An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn’t smoke more than one cigarette a day. A month later the gentleman came into the doctor’s office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man. “But you know, doctor,” he said, “it’s not easy to begin smoking at my age.” 45. The writer thinks that_____________ health is more important than wealth B. work is as important as studies C. medicine is more important than pleasure D. nothing is more important than money 46. The underlined part means “__________”. he was feeling better than ever B. he wasn’t a healthy man C. he was feeling worse than before D. he will be well again 47. From the last sentence of the passage, we learn the man__________before the doctor told him not to smoke more than one cigarette a day. A. was a heavy smoker B. didn’t smoke so much C. didn’t smoke D. began to learn to smoke 48. Which of the following is NOT true? A. The doctor usually tests his/her blood pressure when a person is ill. B. The man told the doctor he couldn’t remember things. C. The man thanked the doctor. D. The man didn’t follow the doctor’s advice. |
. When coal is burned in a boiler, two kinds of ash by-products are produced: a heavy bottom ash and a fine-as-powder fly ash. About 10 to 15 percent of the coal by-product is bottom ash which is used like sand on streets and highways covered with ice, and also on highways as paving material. It is the fly ash, however, that is receiving much attention. Once considered a waste, fly ash is now regarded as a natural resource in the United States. It can be placed in some lower places, where it is compacted(压实) and covered with soil, for the seeds of various grasses and plants to be placed in the soil to make the land productive. Fly ash may be added to concrete (混凝土)to build roads and other kinds of buildings, taking the place of the cement(水泥) up to 20 percent. As a by-product of burned coal, fly ash requires no extra energy to be produced, while cement production requires great amounts of energy. Besides, the technology is able to take out some useful minerals from the fly ash, which is still a very expensive process today. But the time may come when it is cheaper to take out these products from ash than to mine new supplies. 49. The bottom ash can be put on icy streets________. A. in order to rebuild them B. in order to make them colorful C. so that people can walk on them D. so that cars can run faster 50. The fly ash can be used to________. Fly ash is made while producing cement. C. It takes less energy to produce fly ash than cement. D. Fly ash is a costless by-product. 52. A. to buy things from other countries B. to search for useful materials in the mountains C. to dig deeply into the ground to get useful materials D. to take out certain materials from other things |

French surgeons have performed what they said on Wednesday was the world"s first partial face transplant--- giving a new nose, chin and lips to a woman attacked by a dog. Specialists from two French hospitals carried out the operation on a 38-year-old woman on Sunday in the northern city of Amiens by taking the face from a brain-dead woman, who had hanged herself just hours before the operation. Her family agreed on the operation. “The patient is in an excellent state and the transplant looks normal,” the hospitals said in a brief statement after waiting three days to announce the pioneering surgery. The woman had been left without a nose and lips after the dog attacked her last May, and was unable to talk or chew properly. Such injuries are “extremely difficult, if not impossible” to repair using normal surgical techniques, the statement said. The statement did not say what the woman would look like when she had fully recovered, but medical experts said she was unlikely to resemble the woman who had been the source of her new face. The operation was led by Jean-Michel Dubernard, a specialist from a hospital in Lyon who has also carried out hand transplants, Skin transplants have long been used to treat burns and other injuries, but operations around the mouth and nose have been considered very difficult because of the area"s high sensitivity to foreign tissue. Teams in France, the United States and Britain had been developing techniques to make face transplants a reality There was a short-term risk for the patient if blood vessels became blocked, a medium-term danger of her body rejecting the new skin and a long-term possibility that the drugs used could cause cancers. Experts say that although such medical advances should be celebrated, the transplant had thrown up moral(道德的)and ethical(伦理的)issues. Little is known about the psychological effect of the transplant. 小题1:The best title for the passage would be ________.A.French Woman has First Partial Face Transplant | B.First Face Transplant Opens Debate | C.Risks and Ethical Problems of a Face Transplant | D.A Complete Face Transplant of a French Woman | 小题2:Why did the woman need such an operation?A.Her face had been bitten by a dog | B.Her face had been burnt in a fire. | C.She was born especially ugly | D.She wanted to test such an operation. | 小题3:The underlined word "resemble" means ________.A.to remember forever | B.to recognize immediately | C.to set as an example | D.to present similarity or likeness to | 小题4:What can we learn about the operation?A.The woman had used the dead woman" s whole face. | B.There has arisen a debate about the operation. | C.The woman will suffer from psychological damage soon. | D.Such transplants have been performed by doctors. |
