Owning a smartphone may not be as smart as you think. They may let you surf the Internet, listen to music and take photos wherever you are, but they also turn you into a workaholic(工作狂). A study suggests that, by giving you access to emails at all times, the smartphone adds as much as two hours to your working day. Researchers found that Britons work an additional 460 hours a year on average as they are able to respond to emails on their mobiles. The study shows the average UK working day is between 9 and 10 hours, but a further 2 hours is spent responding to or sending work emails, or making work calls. Almost one in ten admits spending up to three hours outside their normal working day checking work emails. Some workers say they are on call almost 24 hours a day. Nearly two-thirds say they often check work emails just before they go to bed and as soon as they wake up, while over a third have replied to one in the middle of the night. The average time for first checking emails is between 6 am and 7 am, with more than a third checking their first email in this period, and a quarter checking them between 11pm and midnight. Ghadi Hobeika, marketing director of Pixmania, said: “The ability to access millions of applications has made smartphones invaluable for many people. However, there are disadvantages. Many companies expect their employees to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and smartphones mean that people cannot get away from work. The more constantly in touch we become, the more is expected of us in work . ” 小题1:With a smartphone the average UK working day is _______.A.2 hours | B.9 to 10 hours | C.11 to 12 hours | D.24 hours | 小题2:It could be inferred from the text that the British people _______.A.prefer to check emails in the morning | B.are crazy about different smartphones | C.shorten their normal working hours | D.work extra hours with smartphones | 小题3:What does Ghadi Hobeika feel about smartphones?A.They are unimportant for most of people. | B.They have disadvantages for some companies. | C.They make it impossible for people to rest. | D.They are useful to improve a work ability. | 小题4:Where can we most probably read this text?A.In a science fiction. | B.In a newspaper. | C.In a travel magazine. | D.In a storybook. |

It was not the first time for Shi Benliang, a senior physics major at Peking University, to feed cats. But the 22-year-old felt sad when he saw the scars and wounds on the bodies of the little creatures. “I can imagine how they have suffered from being abandoned. They lead a harsh life wandering around,” said the student..Shi is one of a dozen students at the university volunteering to feed the stray cats during the winter break. Recruited by the Stray Cat Rescue Association at the university through a Bulletin Board System (BBS), he took turns with other students to care for the homeless animals. It is estimated that there are more than 100 stray cats on the campus of Peking University. Jin Jing, 18, an economics freshman at the university, cared for the cats for two days. “At around 5 pm I cycled to the 22 feeding sites on campus marked on a special map,” she said. “At each site I left some cat food and water.”Jin was excited when the animals rushed to her feet. “Some are shy and timid, and others are more outgoing. Each of them has their own name such as ‘Sweet Orange’ or ‘Karl Marx’,” she said. “By feeding them I learned to respect life.” Liu Chenhao, a senior electronics and computer science major, who is in charge of the association, said that feeding was just one part of their responsibilities.“Our aim is to keep the stray cats in check and maintain harmony between them and the students on campus,” he said. The organization also takes cats to the animal hospital to be treated for oral and skin disease. Another of its major tasks is to find new homes for the cats by uploading their photos and information online. “We’re very careful when selecting owners and ask them lots of questions to ensure that they won’t desert their cat under any circumstances, such as when they move house or get married,” Liu said. Chinese star Yao Ming has retired. Yao made it official Wednesday, telling a news conference that a series of foot and leg injuries forced him to end his playing career at the age of 30. “I will formally end my career,’’ said Yao, who became a household name in China before starting his NBA career with the Houston Rockets in 2002. Yao played eight seasons in the NBA. “Today is an important day for me and holds a special meaning for both my basketball career and my future,’’ Yao said. “I had to leave the court since I suffered a stress fracture(断裂) in my left foot for the third time at the end of last year. Morey made the long trip from Houston. Morey said 20 hours on planes was tiring but “I would be sorry if I wasn’t here.” “It’s a big moment,’’ Morey added. “Yao had a sense of humor, a great attitude and sense of responsibility. The slogan “a dog is for life, not just for Christmas” has been going strong for 27 years now. Dogs and cats have been popular Christmas gifts in the gifts in the UK and Europe for many years. But some people still haven’t quite got the message. The slogan still holds good. Some 105,000 dogs were rounded up by local government last year because they had been abandoned, many of them shortly after the festival season. The main reason given by owners for handing their dogs over to the Dogs Trust is that the dogs need more attention than they can give; behavioral problems and moving home are also reasons given. But Eleanor Silk, the Trust’s communications director, says, “It’s often four or five months after Christmas, in early summer, when owners find that the dog has got too big and too active, or it hasn’t been trained properly and has caused damage around the home.” In any case, some organizations that help pets are quick to point out that if you are serious about getting a puppy(小狗) as a pet, Christmas is not the time to do it. Puppies need to get used to their new surroundings, to be introduced to a routine, and to be looked after like small children. It’s hard to meet any of these needs at Christmas. What’s more, pulling a puppy out of a Christmas stocking in itself sends the wrong message to children. It encourages children to think of the puppy as a toy, rather than a responsibility. Appreciating what you’re taking on with a dog can be a sobering (清醒的) realization. “For life” means thinking about the effect they’ll have on your life. It also infers you will need to care for the dog for its whole life. 小题1:What would be the best title for the passage?A.Dogs and Cats—the Most Popular Christmas Gifts. | B.A pet is for Life, Not just for Christmas. | C.How to Take Care of Your Pets over Christmas. | D.Let’s Help Those Abandoned Pets | 小题2:According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a reason for pets to be abandoned?A.Pets spread some diseases. | B.Pets damage some things in the house. | C.The owners can’t take good care of the pets. | D.The owners have to move to other places. | 小题3:The underlined words “rounded up” in Paragraph 2 mean “________”.A.given out as gifts | B.thrown away | C.gathered into one place | D.raised to make money | 小题4:The fifth paragraph mainly tells us________.A.how to take best care of Christmas pets | B.the right time to have a puppy as a pet | C.the reasons why Christmas is not the time to get a pet | D.the worries about Christmas pets from organizations that help pets | 小题5:Why is the author against the idea of putting a dog in the Christmas stocking as a Christmas gift?A.Because these dogs can still cause damage. | B.Because children will not take dogs seriously. | C.Because children don’t like to have dogs as Christmas gifts. | D.Because a Christmas stocking is not big enough to put a dog in. |

If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out. While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day ,few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes. But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China. In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学).Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers. So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well. Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West. As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is. 小题1:The opening paragraph is mainly intended to .A.provide some key facts about Confucius | B.attract the readers’ interest in the subject | C.show great respect for the ancient thinker | D.prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations | 小题2:We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students .A.have a great interest in studying Chinese | B.take an active part in Chinese competitions | C.try to get high scores in Chinese exams | D.fight for a chance to learn Chinese | 小题3:What is the best title for the passage?A.Forgotten Wisdom in America | B.Huge Fans of the Chinese Language | C.Chinese Culture for Westerners | D.Old Thinker with a Big Future | 小题4:The passage is likely to appear in .A.a biography | B.a history paper | C.a newspaper | D.a philosophy textbook |
