Whenever my dog, Barney, comes into the house after having been for a ride in the car, he runs to the pen(围栏) we have set up for him by the back door. It’s not something we intentionally trained him to do. The habit came simply because my husband tended to put him in his pen whenever they came in. After doing it a few times, Barney just figures that’s what you do when you come inside after a car ride. It’s the same with your thinking. You get into the habit of thinking a certain way and then you’ll rarely question it after that. This is especially true when you were growing up. You developed habits that just made things easier for you. You probably didn’t even think about them. That’s just the way it was and that’s what you did. Just like Barney thinks he has to go into his pen, you do things automatically as well. For example, when you were a kid, you may have been told not to “talk back” and to just keep quiet about things that were bothering you. These are habits that might have worked to keep you safe and out of trouble when you were young. Now that you"re grown up, you may be finding that these previous strategies are actually causing you problems. In a relationship, not communicating isn"t going to work as your partner can’t read your mind. What works when you"re a child may not work when you become an adult. When you decide you need to change your thoughts, your brain may at first feel that it"s not a safe thing to do. Lots of practice and years of experience says it’s not. Also, you don’t know to question the thought. It’s a truth for you. The trick is to look at your results and see if your thoughts are the cause. Be willing to question your thinking and ask yourself if there are thoughts that are hindering (妨碍) you. As you are now in a different phase of your life, different strategies may be needed. 小题1:As with the dog Barney, people _______.A.think in a habitual way | B.enjoy having a car ride | C.usually behave in a friendly way | D.have a good memory | 小题2:According to the passage, as a kid, one tends to _________.A.be afraid to make mistakes | B.have the experience of playing with a dog | C.learn much from adults like his/her parents | D.form a habit which can keep his/her out of trouble | 小题3:In the writer’s opinion, adults should _______.A.not“talk back” | B.avoid causing any problem | C.change the habit which will bring troubles | D.value their habits formed in their childhood | 小题4:It can be concluded from the passage that ________.A.the author’s husband must be good at training dogs | B.childhood is the best time for developing good habits | C.one can change his/her life by changing his/her thoughts | D.you should change all your childhood habits when you grow up |

Every day we go to school and listen to teachers, and the teacher will ask us some questions. Sometimes, the classmates will ask your opinions of the work of the class. When you are telling others in the class what you have found out about these topics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You are not taking part in a family conversation or having a chat with friends --- you are in a situation where a large group of people will remain silent, waiting to hear what you have to say. You must speak so that they can hear you loudly enough and clearly enough but without trying to shout or appearing to force yourself. Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official who might meet you. The person you are seeing will try to put you at your ease in ordinary conversation but the situation is somewhat different from that of an ordinary conversation. You must take special care that you can be heard. 小题1:When you speak to the class, you should speak __________.A.as loudly as possible | B.in a low voice | C.loudly | D.forcefully | 小题2:The situation in the class is _________ that in your house.A.not very different from | B.sometimes the same as | C.sometimes not the same as | D.not the same as | 小题3:If you are having a conversation with an official, the most important thing for you is _____________.A.to show your ability | B.to be very gentle | C.to make sure that you can be heard | D.to put the official at ease | 小题4:The main idea of this passage is __________.A.that we must use different ways at different situations | B.that we must speak loudly | C.that we must keep silent at any time | D.that we must talk with the class |

All parents know that one of their most important tasks is to prepare their children for an independent life, but any parent can tell you that it’s hard to let go of your children. That balance between keeping your children safe and allowing them to learn from their own mistakes can be heartbreaking. Years of experience means that parents often do know best, but on the other hand, the young, being less bound by tradition, are often more creative, more able to find new solutions to old problems. Revolutions are led by the young. Good teachers make the growth of critical (批判性的) thinking easier in their students, only to find that this can lead to a questioning of the teachers’ basic beliefs. Schools encourage parents to become involved, but are often embarrassed when parents have reservations about some of the educational methods being used. Governments encourage unimportant groups to empower themselves in order to participate fully in the development process. And they are often surprised when the new leaders of these groups turn around and attack the policies of that same government. The rebellions (叛逆的)young and the newly unimportant groups are important in social development. They are not necessarily representatives of those they want to represent or not realistic in their demands, but their voices must be heard. Good parents know that just forbidding particular behaviors does not prevent their children from finding ways to engage in these forbidden activities. Indeed, sometimes the forbidden fruit is more inviting, just because it is not accepted by authority. Parents must work with their children to educate them on the facts, know as much as possible about he lives of their children, provide a good example, encourage more wholesome activities but also support their children when they don’t follow what is expected of them. But the most important point is that they also need to learn how to let go. 小题1:By saying “Revolutions are led by the young”, the author indicates that young people are more .A.conventional | B.realistic | C.creative | D.heartbreaking | 小题2:From the second paragraph we know .A.teachers’ basic beliefs should be questioned by students | B.schools encourage parents to question their education methods | C.movement is satisfied with the new leaders’ attack on the policies | D.the voice of the rebellious young should be heard by the government | 小题3:In order to educate children well, parents should .A.forbid particular behaviors in their daily life | B.know them well and set a good example to them | C.educate them with facts and expect much of them | D.know as much as possible as their children | 小题4:From the passage we can learn that the author prefers .A.free parenting | B.traditional parenting | C.critical parenting | D.smart parenting | 小题5:What is the best title of the passage?A.Letting Go – for Children’s Independent Life | B.Parents’ Tasks – in Children’s Development | C.Way of Growth – for the Young Groups | D.Teaching Methods – for Teachers and Schools |

Some of Man"s closest relatives in the animal kingdom are under serious threat because of human activity, according to a recently published report. Almost one in three of all apes and monkeys are now considered to be in danger of dying out and disappearing from our planet, if action is not taken soon. The report, which was produced for the World Conservation Union (WCU), shows that 114 of the world"s 394 kinds could be lost forever, and the main reason they are threatened is the continuing loss of forests where most of these animals live. In addition, illegal wildlife trade, climate change and commercial(商业的)hunting for meat are also endangering them. What"s more, the problem is getting worse. The number of species on the organization’s Red List has increased by 3 to 25 since 2005. Russell Mittermeier, the main researcher of the WCU report, said, "You could fit(安置) all the surviving members of these 25 species in a single football stadium. So the problem is obviously urgent." The scientists, who drew up the Red List, believe that the situation is now so bad that if action is not taken immediately, it will result in primate(灵长目动物) species dying out - something which has not happened in over a century. The loss of habitat caused by the clearing of forests for wood, farmland and fuel continues to be the main reason for the decreasing number of primates, according to the report, and the problem was most severe in Asia. The loss of forest trees is also responsible for 20 percent of all greenhouse gases - more than all the cars, trucks, trains and airplanes in the world combined. 小题1:What is the main subject of the report discussed in the text?A.Climate change. | B.Loss of animal habitat. | C.Animal protection. | D.Endangered animals | 小题2:How many animals were on the Red List in 2005?小题3:The spokesman refers to "a football stadium" in paragraph 5 to stress that ______.A.the animals enjoy playing sports | B.these animals should be placed there for protection | C.there are not many of these animals left | D.the report was announced there | 小题4:What is the main cause of the greenhouse gas problem according to the text?A.Airplanes. | B.Loss of trees. | C.Factory pollution. | D.Road vehicles. |

New York City schoolchildren can’t use cellphones at school because of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s ban on cellphones in schools. Many parents are opposed to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s ban on cellphones in schools by e-mail messages. There was a 13-year-old student who was shot with a gun after school, unable to call his mother for help. There was a high school student robbed three times last year, twice in her school building. There was a girl who got a piece of glass placed in her eye during school and was saved from a possible cornea transplant (角膜移植) only because, having disobeyed the cellphone ban, she was able to call her mother and get an operation on time. The ban has been on for years, but it set off a widespread parental outcry only in April, after some headmasters sent home letters reminding parents that cellphones are not allowed to be brought into school. Mr Bloomberg has defended the ban, saying that cellphones are bad and often used to cheat or call in friends for fights. If something is important, he says, parents can call schools directly. On the other hand, many of the e-mail messages from parents described the ban as “cruel and heartless”, “absurdly(荒谬地) wrong-headed”, “anti-parent”, “ridiculous”. “We respect the fears that parents have,” David Cantor, a spokesman for Schools Minister Joel I. Klein said, “but after all the fact is that having phones in schools always leads to more problems.” 小题1:A 13-year-old student was shot with a gun after school, unable to call his mother for help, because ____.A.his mother had no cellphone | B.his mother wasn’t at home | C.he didn’t take a cellphone with him | D.he was too frightened to call | 小题2:From the fifth paragraph we can see many parents _________ the ban.A.agreed to | B.thought highly of | C.supported | D.were opposed to | 小题3:According to what the spokesman said, the school might _______.A.call off the ban | B.continue the ban | C.thank the parents | D.allow some students to use cellphones at school |
