of the great performers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were born and brought up in
Russia and Eastern Europe. I asked Isaac Stern, one of the world"s greatest violinists, the reason

ours,"says Isaac Stern,"children are ready to test their limits every day in many fields, including
music. When Western music came to Japan after World War II, that music not only became
part of their daily lives, but it became a discipline as well." The Koreans and Chinese, as we
know, are just as highly motivated as the Japanese.
     That"s a good thing, because even prodigies must work hard. Next to hard work, biological

阅读理解。     The Friday after the American holiday of Thanksgiving is called Black Friday. It"s said that it"s the
day that store ledgers(分类账)move into the black and companies become profitable. On that day,
retailers slash(砍) prices to get consumers to buy.  It is also a time when many Americans start their

everywhere you look.
     Last year a crowd of bargain-hunters killed a Wal-mart worker in a New York suburb. This year,
many stores are increasing security while they slash prices. "This is a huge time for the retail stores,"
said Fred Joutz from George Washington University. "This is when they begin making their profits for
the year."
     Economics professor Fred Joutz says how Americans spend the weekend after Thanksgiving is a
good indication of how consumers feel about the future.
     With the unemployment rate above 10 percent, Joutz says Americans are saving more and spending
less. Some retailers are attracting consumers by opening on Thanksgiving Day, when shops are
traditionally closed.  Other stores open their doors anywhere from midnight to four in the morning.
     And shoppers will be lining up in front of the doors in order to be one of the first ones to walk
through and get a big discount. Electronics like flat screen TVs are usually the first items to go. Sandy
Thomas says it"s an annual family tradition and well worth it. "I just save maybe half of what I would
have spent on a regular, you know, shopping trip," she said.

     When The Grapes of Wrath(愤怒) was published on March 14, 1939, it created a national
sensation(轰动) for its description of the destructive effects of the Great Depression(大萧条) of the
1930s. By the end of April, it was selling 2,500 copies a day-a remarkable number considering the

First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt stepped in to praise the book and defend Steinbeck against his critics. In
1940, the novel won the Pulitzer Prize.

     The Diary of a Young Girl is a book based on the writings from a diary written by Anne Frank
while she was in hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.
     Anne Frank began to keep a diary on her thirteenth birthday, 12 June 1942, three weeks before
going into hiding with her mother Edith, father Otto sister Margot and four other people. With the

     I am not really much of a diet fan, my weight has never been an issue. I eat whatever I want, when I
want. But as Pamela McDonald explains diet is not merely a method for controlling weight, but has a
significant influence on health and quality of life.
     I can hardly imagine that living on fried bacon would be a good way to lose weight and promote good
overall health. Likewise a steady diet of cabbage soup would likely become somewhat monotonous(单调乏味的) after a couple of days.
     Pamela McDonald takes a different approach, there is no one-size-fits-all diet, different people need

will not resolve the entire problem, it is merely one part of the larger picture.
     I have to admit that parts of The APO E Gene Diet were a little heavy going, I appreciate that the
author felt the requirement to back up her claims with some scientific data, but for the lay(外行的) man
it makes for some rather difficult reading.
     The second half of the book, is recipes, now this is something I do understand! She has created some
very innovative dishes, and certainly more than one that had me feeling hungry just reading them. My
favorite of them is a very traditional English dish the Cornish Pasty.

while school was in session.
     One of the Oscar-nominated (提名的) movies I’ve seen this winter break is Slum-dog Millionaire.

Jamal’s childhood home in the slums of India. The place where he and his family lived reminds one of the
hutongs that used to make up a large part of Old Beijing. Jamal and his brother grow and travel across
India, meanwhile surviving as slum-dogs and cheaters, and India ages with them. By the time Jamal is 17
or 18, his old home has been replaced by a giant skyscraper (摩天大楼) financial center. Jamal and
Salim take a moment to reminisce (回忆) about their old lives, as they stand high up in a skyscraper that
is still under construction. The view from above reminded me of a similar view I had just two years ago in China: I was standing there in the living room of a family friend’s modern apartment, looking out through
a window down to the shacks (简陋的房屋) below just next to the building complex. It was amazing
how affluence and poverty could live so close together.
     So, what was most appealing about the movie to me and my Indian friends was how we could relate
to the scenarios (情节) presented in the movie. More important than the plot was the window onto the
social and economic situations in Asia that it provided.
