The most popular way to welcome the new year in the United States is to have a big party. Some parties are at people"s homes. But in recent years,it has become more and more common for Americans to go to a hotel or a club or a restaurant on the night of December the 31st. There, they can have dinner, drink and dance. Most New Year"s parties have something in common. First of all, they are usually noisy. People sing and bands play. And often, guests pull a cracker when the clock strikes twelve at midnight. People think that loud sounds would drive away the evil spirits of the old year before the new year begins. For many people New Year Eve is the night when they can drink as much as they like. Some New Year"s celebrations have ended sadly for people who got drunk and had driving accidents. Radio and television announcements warn people of the danger of drunk driving. Some places offer free rides home for drunken people. The biggest and noisiest New Year party in the United States takes place at Times Square in New York City. Thousands of people gather there. Some of them ring bells or let off crackers. Others blow whistles or car horns. And at 12 o"clock, they begin to cheer as an electric sign in the shape of a red apple lights up on top of a tall building. The Americans keep up important traditions as the new year begins. They make decisions about how to improve themselves in the year ahead. Experts say that the most common New Year decision in the United States is to eat less. But many Americans also promise themselves to stop smoking,or stop drinking wine,or to be nicer to their friends and families. Experts find fewer than ten percent of Americans carry out their New Year decisions. Few want to give up this tradition. Almost everyone seems to enjoy looking back over the year that has just ended and looking forward to a nice beginning of a new year. |

While all cultures share the same basic emotions, the body language used throughout different cultures of the world vary enormously. What can mean one thing in one country can often mean something completely different in another. For example, in North America and Europe people tend to prefer direct eye contact. But in some Asian countries longer eye contact is considered rude. So when communicating with people, always be aware of different cultural customs that may exist. A V sign in the US could mean victory, but in England, it stands for a rude challenge, which has the same meaning as showing the middle finger in the US. The OK gesture in America and England is given to mean everything is good or well. But in Latin America is looked on as a rude sign. The thumbs up sign in America and most of Europe means that something is good or well done, but it is considered rude in many Asian countries. Putting your feet on the table is generally not thought to be rude in America and England. However, in Thailand it is really rude. Telling someone to come to you by curling your index finger is acceptable in America and England, but this gesture signifies death in Singapore. Raising your hand up means stop in America and England. In some Asian countries this gesture is used when asking for permission to speak. In most westernized countries it is considered normal for two men to shake hands. In some Asian countries it is quite normal for men to kiss each other, while in most westernized countries men kissing in public would be viewed as homosexual behavior. If you would like more information on different cultural gestures all over the world, see this site on nonverbal communication. |

As pack animals, wolves work together to hunt and rely on howling as an important means of communication among each other. There"re different explanations of a wolf"s howl and it appears that there may be more to discover. One theory is that wolves howl to bond better together. It"s almost as if howling together helps the pack stay together. Perhaps something similar to people feeling a sense of involvement with each other when singing a song together. But this theory may be wrong, explains Fred H. Harrington, a professor who studies wolf behavior. Indeed, there have been times when wolves have been seen one moment howling in a chorus(合唱), and the next, quarreling among each other. It appears that usually the lowest-ranking members of the pack may actually be "punished" for joining in the chorus at times. So is howling a way to strengthen a social bond or just a way to reconfirm status (地位) among its members? Why do wolves howl for sure? What is clear, however, is that howling is often used among packmates to locate each other. Hunting grounds are distant and it happens that wolves may separate from one another at times. When this happens, howling appears to be an excellent means of gathering. Howling, interestingly, is a contagious behavior. When one wolf starts to howl, very likely others will follow. This is often seen to occur in the morning, as if wolves were doing some sort of "roll call" where wolves all howl together to report their presence. | 1. What is the possible similarity between wolves" howling together and human"s singing in chorus? | A. The act of calling each other. B. The sense of accomplishment. C. The act of hunting for something. D. The sense of belonging to a group. | 2. Why does Harrington think the "social bond" theory may be wrong? | A. Wolves separate from each other after howling. B. Wolves tend to protect their hunting grounds. C. Wolves sometimes have quarrels after howling together. D. Wolves of low rank are encouraged to join in the chorus. | 3. Researchers are sure that wolves often howl to______. | A. show their ranks B. find their companions C. report the missing ones D. express their loneliness | 4.
