What do you want to be when you grow up? A teacher? A doctor? How about an ice cream taster? Yes, there really is a job where you can get paid to taste ice cream. Just ask John Harrison, an " Official Taste Tester" for the past 21 years. Testing helps manufacturers to be sure of a product"s quality. During his career Harrison has been responsible for appro- ving large quantities of sweet ice cream--as well as for developing over 75 flavors(味道). Some people think that it would be easy to do this job;after all, you just have to like ice cream, right? No-there"s more to the job than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or food-science degree would be very useful to someone wanting a career in this "cool"field. In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes and assesses 60 ice cream samples. He lets the ice cream warm up to about 12°F. Harrison explains, " You get more flavor from warmer ice cream, which is why some kids like to stir it, creating ice-cream soup. " While the ice cream warms up, Harrison looks over the samples and grades each one on its appearance. "Tasting begins with the eyes," he explains. He checks to see if the ice cream is attractive and asks himself, "Does the product have the colour expected from that flavor?" Next it"s time to taste! Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavors and test samples from so many kinds of ice cream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy-working at one cool job. |

Ever felt like destroying the car in front of you when you"re stuck in an endless traffic jam? Well ,the Spanish company StopStress is offering clients(客户 ) the possibility of doing just that-but in controlled ,safe conditions. Clients can also destroy computers, mobile phones and TV sets in what the company calls" destructible therapy" ( therapy : treatment of a medical disorder). A session costs 60 euros(US $80)per person. Arribas says the idea came to him when he was having trouble parking his car. "Dozens of people have used the therapy, which helps people become aware of their stress level and helps them to slow down," Arribas explained. Photographs are everywhere. They decorate (装饰) the walls of homes and are used in stores for sales of different goods. The news is filled with pictures of fires, floods, and special events. Photos record the beauties of nature. They can also bring things close that are far away. Through photos, people can see wild animals, cities in foreign lands, and even the stars in outer space. Photos also tell stories. Reporting the news through photos is called photojournalism. At times photojournalists tell their stories through a single picture. At other times, they use a group of pictures to tell a story. Each picture is like a chapter in a book, which can do more than record the facts. It can also be a strong force for social change. Jacob Riis was among the first photojoumalists. He took pictures of parts of New York City where the poor lived. Riis believed that poverty(贫穷 )caused crime, and he used photos to help him prove his point. A few years later, the photos of small children working in factories by Lewis Hine shocked the public. Hine"s pictures helped bring about laws to protect such children. Hundreds of pictures may have to be taken in order to get one or two really good photos. It takes science to have the photo come out clearly and art to make a photo that has a good design and expresses feeling. Photojournalists make an actual record of what they see. A photo, however, can be both a work of art and an actual record. It can record an important event as a beautiful or exciting picture. As historical and artistic documents (文献), photos can become more important over time. Today photojournalists still have their pictures appear in newspapers and magazines. They also publish (发表) them in books and on the Internet. |

Most people say" yes" much more readily than" no". A friend is moving house this weekend and would like some help, and you agree. But, what you really wanted was relaxing at home for a couple of quiet days,or a roommate spends the whole weekend playing video games and wants to borrow your homework for"reference". But,you"ve just finished it after working hard for a whole day. Many people say" yes" to this kind of requests. They tend not to consider their own interests and feelings, and are often angry with themselves afterwards. Saying" no" requires courage and considerable practice. " Everyone wants to be liked. " says Gabriele Steinki,a German psychologist. "Saying"no"risks losing the affection of the person asking for the favor. Or even a job. "The result is that many people say"yes"just for keeping the peace. But experts say this is regrettable. Anyone should have the right to say" no". In fact, rejecting a request can even help to stabilize a relationship because it expresses real affection. But,for peop"le accustomed to agreeing every request,it"s very distressing to say" no". Most people believe that if they say" no" ,they"ll lose the affection of the person. But the affection is important to them. This way of thinking can be replaced by this:"If he only likes me because I always do what suits him, then the price of this affection is too high in the long term. " When people say " no", Steinki advises giving the reasons calmly until the person gets the message. |
