Do It Yourself "Do it yourself (DIY)" is a term used to describe building or repairing of something without the aid of experts. It came into common usage in the 1950s in reference to home improvement projects which people might choose to complete independently. 1 It promotes the ability of the ordinary person to learn to do more than what he thinks is possible. From the late 20th century, we have given in to the convenience of being told the "right way" to do things because it is convenient. 2 We have organized shopping, organized entertainment, and even organized marriage. With the development of industrial revolution, we have had our clothes and furniture made with the help of the machine. Our food supply has left our backyards and ventured (冒险) into the factory. Things get cheaper and easier to find, but we buy as one and eat as one. DIY culture holds a powerful belief: 3 That statement may seem like the DIY movement is quite self-centered, but there is great evidence that the opposite is true. By creating with our own minds and hands, by relying on what has come before and projecting what will be, we have become open to many possibilities. 4 People can both create to serve their own needs and find the value in what others create. In other words, we can both learn how to make what we desire ourselves and consume goods made by others. 5 But the joy of DIY culture is how we begin to find our interconnectedness, for example, our talents of swimming and skating with the talents of others in our community. |
A. Almost everything in our life has been arranged in a system. B. DIY provides us with some particular requirements and tools. C. People can have what they want if they can learn to make it themselves. D. We question the lifestyle based on our values and fashioned with our hands. E. Of course the danger of DIY culture is that we try to become entirely self-confident. F. In recent years, DIY has taken on a broader meaning that covers a wide range of skill sets. G. We can sew our own clothes, grow vegetables, and do other activities that put us in touch with |

If you haven"t heard or seen anything about Road Rage in the last few months, you"ve probably been avoiding the media. There have been countless stories about this new and scary phenomenon, considered a type of aggressive driving. You have most likely encountered aggressive driving or Road Rage recently if you drive at all. While drunk driving remains a critical problem, the facts about aggressive driving are surely as disturbing. For instance, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Association, 41,907 people died on the highway last year. Of those deaths, the agency estimates that about two-thirds were caused at least in part by aggressive driving behavior. Why is this phenomenon occurring more than ever now, and why is it something that seemed almost nonexistent a few short years ago? Experts have several theories, and all are probably partially correct. One suggestion is sheer overcrowding. In the last decade, the number of cars on the roads has increased by more than 11 percent, and the number of miles driven has increased by 35 percent. However, the number of new road miles has only increased by 1 percent. That means more cars in the same amount of space; and the problem is magnified in urban areas. Also, people have less time and more things to do. With people working and trying to fit extra chores and activities into the day, stress levels have never been higher. Stress creates anxiety, which leads to short tempers. These factors, when combined in certain situations, can spell Road Rage. You may think you are the last person who would drive aggressively, but you might be surprised. For instance, have you ever yelled out loud at a slower driver, sounded the horn long and hard an another car, or sped up to keep another driver from passing? If you recognize yourself in any of these situations, watch out! Whether you are getting angry at other drivers, or another driver is visibly upset with you, there are things you can do to avoid any major conflict. If you are easily influenced by Road Rage, the key is to discharge your emotion in a healthy way. If you are the target of another driver"s rage, do everything possible to get away from the other driver safely, including avoiding eye contact and getting out of their way. |

I"m Rich Kleinfeldt with some financial expressions used in business and the stock market. Our first expression is "in the red." It is another way of saying that a business is losing money. In the past, numbers in the financial records of a company were written in red ink to show a loss. A business magazine recently published a report about a television company. The report said the company was still in the red, but was able to cut its loss from the year before. A profit by a business is written in black numbers. So a company that is "in the black" is making money. Another financial expression is "run on the bank." That is what happens when many people try to withdraw all their money from a bank. A "run on the bank" usually happens when people believe there is danger a bank may fail or close. Newspaper reports about a banking crisis in Russia used that expression. They said the government acted because of fears that the crisis would cause a run on the banks. "Day trading" is a system that lets investors trade directly on an electronic market system. It was the first completely computerized stock market. It sells stocks of companies not listed on any stock exchange. Many high technology companies are listed on it. Day trading companies provide a desk and a computer system to an investor who wants to trade. Individuals must provide fifty thousand dollars or more to the trading company to pay for the stocks they buy. Thousands of other investors do day trading from computers in their homes. A day trader watches stock prices carefully. When he sees a stock rise in price, he uses the computer to buy shares of the stock. If the stock continues to rise in price in the next few minutes, the day trader sells the shares quickly to make a small profit. Then he looks for another stock to buy. If a stock goes down instead of up, he sells it and accepts the loss. The idea is to make a small profit many times during the day. Day traders may buy and sell stocks hundreds of times each day. |

Have you ever intended to be fully absorbed in your work but found yourself distracted (走神) by e-mail, the Internet and other things throughout the day? According to the survey made by a famous university in the USA, most people have the experience. "People often lose their concentration when they are bored, of course, but also when they are engaged in challenging tasks," says Peter Bregman, the head of the survey. "They sometimes have a feeling to escape from what"s difficult or boring, so they jump out," he says. The part of the brain devoted to attention is connected to the brain"s emotional center. Any strong emotion -quarrels with colleagues, roblems at home -can interrupt our attention. Studies over the last decade have shown that too much work to do at a time can easily lead to distraction. Refocusing is hard for many people. Robert Epstein suggests the following, "Stop and listen to some soft music for a few minutes. Find a good friend or a teacher and say out your matter on your mind. Go for a short walk or take a deep breath, where you breathe in deeply, count to five slowly, hold it and breathe out very slowly." This can "blow out all the tension and the unwanted in your mind to restore your focus." Take more control by structuring your time and becoming more aware of your behaviors. "Setting the phone alarm to go off every hour is my way of creating awareness," Mr. Bregman says. "You have to inform yourself that you"ve lost focus in order to do something about it." Starting the day with a to-do list is also important, such as when to eat, when to go to the gym or take a walk. But if it"s overly ambitious, you will put yourself in a state of anxiety, which makes it hard for the brain to concentrate. "Choosing three or four things as your priority (优先) for the day allows your brain to settle down and focus," he says. |

Dear Abby, I am a very conservative woman. I don"t drink, dance, wear makeups or pants. I enjoy the company of friends despite (尽管) our differences and thought they enjoyed mine. On our most recent outing, however, they laughed at my religious jewelry, commented on my "lack of fashion," and made me feel guilty for not wanting to stay out late. Despite this, they are great friends and would help me at the drop of a hat. I don"t bring up their being overweight, or that I think some of the clothes they wear are ugly. I don"t criticize them for sleeping around. I wish they would accept me for who I am. I am considering not going out with them the next time they ask, but I don"t really want it to come to that. Any suggestions? 1. Good communication is vital in modern society. We know that much of the communication is unspoken. Consciously or unconsciously, we show our true feelings with our eyes, faces, bodies and attitudes. Your good qualities can make good communication. The personal qualities include physical appearance, energy, rate of speech, pitch and tone of voice, gestures, expressiveness of eyes, and the ability to hold the interest of others. What should we do so that our communication will be effective? Here are my suggestions. 2. Firstly, the trick is to be consistently you, at your best. The most effective people never change character from one situation to another. They"re the same whether they"re having a conversation with their close friends, addressing their garden club or being interviewed for a job. They communicate with their whole being. 3. Secondly, whether you"re talking to one person or one hundred, always remember to look at them. Don"t break eye contact while talking. As you enter a room, move your eyes comfortably, then look directly at those in the room and smile. This shows clearly that you are at ease. Smiling is important. The best type of smile and eye contact is gentle and comfortable, not forced. 4. You should also absorb other people before showing yourself. You can"t learn anything when you talk. When you attend a meeting, a party or an interview, don"t immediately start throwing your opinions. Stop for a second. Absorb what"s going on. What"s the mood of the others - are they down, up, happy, expectant? Are they eager to learn from you, or do they show resistance? If you can sense what"s happening with others, you will be better able to reach them. So, listen before you talk. 5. How do you get your energy up? Before the meeting, collect your thoughts about the goal of the meeting - yours and the other"s. Once you go through the doorway, no longer think about yourself. Focus on the person you are meeting to find out what he is interested in. Properly collected energy comes across when we sincerely believe something. When you speak with energy, you are involved with your audience and your message. You create an air of certainty. The audience may disagree with you, but they can"t question your belief. |
