If you haven"t heard or seen anything about Road Rage in the last few months, you"ve probably been avoiding the media. There have been countless stories about this new and scary phenomenon, considered a type of aggressive driving. You have most likely encountered aggressive driving or Road Rage recently if you drive at all. While drunk driving remains a critical problem, the facts about aggressive driving are surely as disturbing. For instance, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Association, 41,907 people died on the highway last year. Of those deaths, the agency estimates that about two-thirds were caused at least in part by aggressive driving behavior. Why is this phenomenon occurring more than ever now, and why is it something that seemed almost nonexistent a few short years ago? Experts have several theories, and all are probably partially correct. One suggestion is sheer overcrowding. In the last decade, the number of cars on theroads has increased by more than 11 percent, and the number of miles driven has increased by 35 percent. However, the number of new road miles has only increased by 1 percent. That means more cars in the same amount of space; and the problem is magnified in urban areas. Also, people have less time and more things to do. With people working and trying to fit extra chores and activities into the day, stress levels have never been higher. Stress creates anxiety, which leads to short tempers. These factors, when combined in certain situations, can spell Road Rage. You may think you are the last person who would drive aggressively, but you might be surprised. For instance, have you ever yelled out loud at a slower driver, sounded the horn long and hard at another car, or sped up to keep another driver from passing? If you recognize yourself in any of these situations, watch out! Whether you are getting angry at other drivers, or another driver is visibly upset with you, there are things you can do to avoid any major conflict. If you are susceptible(easily influenced) to Road Rage, the key is to discharge your emotion in a healthy way. If you are the target of another driver"s rage, do everything possible to get away from the other driver safely, including avoiding eye contact and getting out of their way. |

Smartphone Security Blankets Security-for the information on your smartphone, as well as for the phone itself-is a hot topic these days. The truth is that you"re packing a lot of sensitive information on your phone, and you should keep it safe. When it comes to physical security, iPhone users would do well to download Find My iPhone a free app (application program) from Apple that allows you to visit a website and see your (lost, stolen or misplaced) phone on a map. You can then sound an alarm, send a message that will pop up on its screen, lock the phone or erase all your data. Android does not have an exact equivalent, but there are plenty of alternatives. A free app called Lookout offers the find-my-phone feature. The paid version allows you to wipe the data from your phone remotely. Then there is your coffee shop"s WiFi network. Anyone with minimal technical expert skill can snoop on (窥视) people using shared wireless networks, harvesting passwords and other personal data. Lookout"s apps will caution you when you"ve logged on to an unsecure network, but cannot protect you once you"re there. In order to protect yourself on such networks, you can use a virtual private network, or V.P.N. This turns all your activity into nonsense to anyone trying to read along with you from across the Starbucks. It also keeps websites from tracking you and, if you"re traveling, allows you to get access to sites that may be blocked in other countries. If you have an iPhone, the simplest V.P.N. app is probably Hotspot Shield , whose distinguishing feature is said to be that it automatically kicks in each time you start browsing (浏览), as opposed to other V.P.N. apps that require you to start them up manually. This matters, because even if you decide you want a V.P.N. app, you want to spend approximately zero time thinking about it. For the most part, that was true of Hotspot Shield, though occasionally it took a while to connect or temporarily lost connection without warning. I found myself having to turn the app on and off sometimes, which involved setting my phone constantly. If even reading about the settings on your phone drives you crazy, then it is probably best to stay away from a V.P.N. app. But if you"re the type who can"t resist checking your bank balance from your corner bar, the hassle may be preferable to the risk. |
1. Which of the following can warn you against the unsecure network? |
A. Android. B. V.P.N. C. Lookout. D. Find My iPhone. |
2. By using V.P.N., users can _______. |
A. find their lost phone on the Internet B. erase all the data from the phone remotely C. check their bank balance now and then D. save their browsing from being tracked |
3. The underlined word "that" in Para. 6 refers to the fact that _____. |
A. a V.P.N. app kicks in automatically B. the user starts V.P.N. apps manually C. the app takes a while to connect D. users spend no time thinking about it |

Whether your plans include college, heading straight for the workforce, or taking a year off, here are some practical tips to prepare yourself for the journey. Going to College Some people know from an early age exactly what they want to be and how they plan to get there. 2 According to a recent survey, 75% of students change their majors after they enter college. After all, school is also not just about careers and getting a high-paying job after graduation - it"s a place for learning about yourself and the world. Getting a Job Maybe you"ve decided that college isn"t for you - right now, anyway. If you want to join the workforce, opportunities are out there for people who don"t have degrees. Some products-selling or service industry organizations offer training programs to high school graduates. Search the classified ads in the newspaper and do some Internet research. 4 Taking Time Off What if you intend to go to college but just don"t feel ready to start yet, for whatever reason? _5 This practice is common in some countries, like the United Kingdom, where it"s called a "gap year". Even if you decide not to apply to college, it can be a great idea to take a year to do something you may not have an opportunity to do again. Lots of volunteer organizations would welcome your time and energy and would provide you with a wonderful learning experience. |

It"s beyond your imagination that a stranger will read your e-mails without your permission or scan the website you"ve visited or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills. All of the things may happen to you one day. To our horror, some of these things have already happened to us. It was reported that recently huge amounts of personal information of the clients (客户) on a certain website was let out. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a spouse, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen or even do something that may bring a disaster to you. Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, but few boundaries remain nowadays. The digital bread crumbs (碎屑) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to know who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can leak the deepest thought in your mind. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret. The key question is: Does that matter? For many Americans, the answer apparently is ""no"". When asked about privacy, most Americans say they are really concerned about losing it. And 60 percent of the respondents say they feel their privacy is "slipping away, and that bothers me". But people say one thing and do another. Only a small number of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. A series of tests about privacy have revealed that people will give up personal information just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon (优惠券). But privacy does matter-at least sometimes. It"s like health; when you have it, you don"t notice it. Only when it"s gone do you wish you"d done more to protect it. |
1. Why does the author say ""we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret"? |
A. Modern society has finally developed into an open society. B. People leave traces around when using modern technology. C. There are always people who are curious about others" affairs. D. Many search engines profit by revealing people"s identities. |
2. What do most Americans do about privacy protection? |
A. Most people are willing to change behavior that might disclose their identity. B. People can refuse the temptation from merchants in daily life. C. People rely more and more on advanced technology and can do little about it. D. People know a lot about the importance of privacy but hardly do anything about it. |
3. According to the author, privacy is in common with health in that _______. |
A. people will make every effort to keep it B. its importance is hardly understood C. it is something that can easily be lost D. people don"t value it until they lose it |
4. What would be the best title for the passage? |
A. No privacy, no health B. Treasure your privacy C. Boundaries are important between friends D. The information age has its own shortcomings |

A new retail (零售) phenomenon-SampleTrend from Japan which allows customers to walk away with free products is to launch in Britain. From tomorrow, visitors to SampleTrend"s central London store can try anything on its shelves, and all of the products can be taken home without charge. For a nominal (象征性的) annual membership fee of £60, users are free to enter the shop once a month and help themselves to no less than £250 worth of goods every year. The only requirement is that shoppers are asked to complete a simple questionnaire about each product they try. Known as "try-vertising" (体验式广告), the concept allows manufacturers to test products and receive consumer feedback (反馈.) before launching onto the open market. It is already popular in Japan and now aims to promote the broken UK retail industry. According to new figures, stores are facing a Christmas crisis with the weakest trading for six months. Michael Ghosh, the founder behind SampleTrend, said. "The concept behind SampleTrend is unique in the UK. It allows shoppers the opportunity to walk away with a number of real, full-size products of their choosing without handing over a penny." The concept of try-vertising is simple but effective. Businesses across all sectors, from cosmetic (化 妆品) manufacturers to drink makers, place new products on the shelves at SampleTrend and wait for consumers to try them out. Customers complete a short 10-point questionnaire about the product, and the feedback they provide is used to make any last-minute adjustment before the product is brought officially to market. The SampleTrend store houses everything including cosmetics, food and drink, and household goods. Ghosh, the former advertising and sales director for Disney Europe, said such feedback may also build brand loyalty from the beginning-a particularly appealing prospect for new businesses. |
1. What do we know from the passage about SampleTrend? |
A. It appears in Britain first. B. It is unacceptable in Japan. C. Its products are totally free for people. D. Shoppers in it must complete a related questionnaire. |
2. Which of the following is NOT true about try-vertising? |
A. Manufacturers can receive consumer feedback. B. Manufacturers can test their products. C. It can transform the economy of UK. D. It is simple but effective. |

A. cheap price B. newly produced C. high quality D. strangely designed |
4. What is Ghosh"s attitude toward SampleTrend? |
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Uninterested. |
