Monday, April 17 Dear Gramps, I was so upset last week when somebody stole my Super Racer from the park by your house. I called up the toy company but they said they have only red, blue and green racers. Dad called Cobb"s Toy Store today and found out they might have purple ones. Can we go there when I come to visit you next week? You and I were only gone for a few minutes to the shop down the street to get ice-cream and cookies. Maybe the thief was watching us. Mum was surprised when I told her the racer was stolen. She said she used to leave things at the park all the time when she was young. Once she even left her bicycle for two days near the swimming pool. Tell Grandma that I like the food she made last time. Ask Grandma if we can have pancakes with sugar for breakfast when I come this time. I have packed in my towel, comb and soap. Tell her this time I won"t forget to pack in my toothbrush. Love Toby |

Well, choosing to do the following few "simple" things will help to change your life. Review your life. Take time to go through your life and ask yourself, "If I do the same thing I do every day, will there be a change? If I want to change, where will my first step be?" Make careful choices. Choose exactly what you wish to get to live your life; describe and think what you really want. Keep up with chances. Find out about the possibilities and ways that can make you move toward your goals, write them down and see which one suits you most. Get down to business. Start working on your goals. People may bring you down; you may have difficulties; you will fail and want to give up. But the most important thing is never to give up. If you try these "simple" things, you will find that success is something for everyone, and you will finally become what you want to be. Remember, success is more than what you hold in your hands; it is something from the heart. | 1. How many pieces Of advice does the writer give on changing one"s life? | A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. Read the following descriptions (A, B, C and D) and match them with the four opinions marked 1-4. ( )1. Tom: I"d like somewhere to sit and read and enjoy myself. ( )2. Eric: I hope our school can be more comfortable and convenient. ( )3. Tess: I really prefer to have a place to do some exercise after class. ( )4. Ann: I think our school should buy more equipment like computers. | A Our school is big with nice modern buildings and everything, but there is one thing I would really love-a gym. We"re right in the middle of a big city and the traffic is very busy, so I find it very difficult to get out to the gym at lunchtime, A gym would be good for the school. If more people went to the gym and did some exercise, they"d probably work better! | B What I"d most like to have is a little cafe, where we students can rest and do some reading. At the moment people have to stand in the passage, or even outside and there"s nowhere to buy a drink or something, or read the paper, so people don"t stay in school for long after the lessons finish. I think it would be completely different if they had somewhere to enjoy themselves. | C Our school has a nice building, and is in a nice part of the city. Unfortunately we haven"t got much equipment, so I"d really like to have a computer room with the Internet available. I think students can learn a lot this way. And I"d like to have VCDs in every classroom instead of tapes. VCDs are so much more interesting for learning a language, I think. | D Our school is just uncomfortable in every way. For example, the chairs are really uncomfortable, so the next thing I"d like to do is get some comfortable chairs of good quality. Oh, and the worst thing is that we"re on the fifth and sixth floors of our building, so I"d love to have some lifts put in. There"s a report on 3 375 students in seven Chinese cities. It says that 38% of them believe they use the Internet often. While most of them get useful information and use the Internet to help in their studies, some are not using it in a good way. Many are playing online games too much. A few even visit websites they should not look at. Bad things can happen if young people spend too much time on the Internet. In order to help young people use the Internet in a good way, a textbook has been used in some Shanghai middle schools this term. It uses real examples to teach students all about good ways of using the Internet. It gives useful advice such as it"s good to read news or find helpful information to study. Well, some people will say, "Why bother with books? We have the Internet that offers a lot of more colorful fun. Books are history!" But don"t be fooled. I"m sure there"s still a lot to be said for reading. One clear reason is that a well-chosen book can give you a lot of wonderful vocabulary, so long as you have a good dictionary, of course. Believe me, it"s far easier to get new English words and phrases from a book or an article than it is from the TV or the Internet. But another more important point is that books give you something that the Internet simply can not. The average webpage is picture-heavy and the text is often designed to make it as easy to read as possible. While "easy" may attract you, unfortunately it"s of little use for any long-term development of reading skills and the general language level. Because of that, reading on the Internet cannot take the place of reading books. But perhaps the best single reason is that simply choosing what you read and doing it independently means that it"s something you do by and for yourself. You can choose what you want to read. It"s hard work, but somewhere down the line, you"ll find that what once seemed like a duty is now a pleasure. | 1. How many reasons for reading a book does the author mention in the passage? | A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four. | 2. One clear reason for reading books is that it is much easier to get new _____. | A. fun B. articles C. pictures D. vocabulary | 3. Some people say "Books are history!" because _____. | A. they like funny books B. they don"t like reading at all C. they don"t like history books D. they like reading on the Internet | 4. In the author"s opinion, _____ can have long-term development of reading skills and the general language level. | A. reading books B. reading on the Internet C. taking holidays D. checking dictionaries | 5. The writer thinks we can find _____ in reading books. | A. pleasure B. knowledge C. facts D. skills |
