For a girl who"s interested in fashion, what would be the dream job? Being a model? Probably no-that"s for a pencil thin who doesn"t eat. One answer is, fashion stylist. Girls can find it hard to ignore this attractiveness and the field is opening up to normal girls, not only style or fashion design majors (某专业的学生). "It looked too high before, but now I find it more approachable," said Xue Rui, 22, a Fudan University Chinese literature graduate who works as an assistant stylist at Hermès in Shanghai." There is no certain principle in dressing up models, and you can try every way with your own distinct taste to make them pretty and attractive." Some professionals said that Xue"s not mistaken. The attractiveness of this work is not only in the wonderful clothes. Now it"s a career with a bright future and pay packet. The income can allow you to buy expensive clothes and, with your name and photo appearing on pages, readers will remember your fashion tips. A stylist at a fashion magazine can have some unique rights. You have a chance to contact famous pesons and dress them up in a style you like. You need to cooperate with top photographers and select places around the world to take photos in. You might also be invited to fashion shows of top brands and can select some of the favorite clothes. "You have to be "all-round": from hair and make up to clothes, shoes, and accessories (配饰) to the event," said He Qing, 21, a junior in fashion design at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology. "You have to know everything, and handle several things at the same time. It"s challenging. That"s why I love it." So, remember girls, you"ve been warned. |

Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon left their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic. Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim (模糊的) memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all, the insects. I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm had led me into varied investigations (调查研究). I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil reading about other people"s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious (清醒的) mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, keen (敏锐的) eyes, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one of the excellent and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist, up to a certain point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds. |
1. The first paragraph tells us the author _____. |
[ ] |
A. was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood B. lost his hearing when he was a child C. didn"t like his brothers and sisters D. was born into a naturalist"s family |
2. The author can"t remember his relatives clearly because _____. |
[ ] |
A. he didn"t live very long with them B. the family was extremely large C. he was too young when he lived with them D. he was fully occupied with observing nature |
3. The author can"t remember his relatives clearly because _____. |
[ ] |
A. he didn"t live very long with them B. the family was extremely large C. he was too young when he lived with them D. he was fully occupied with observing nature |
4. The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he _____. |
[ ] |
A. has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmetic B. lacks some of the qualities required of a scientist C. just reads about other people"s observations and discoveries D. comes up with solutions in a most natural way |

Americans, generally speaking, make an effort to be friendly with their colleagues, neighbours and other people they often run into. This often takes the form of a simple greeting like "How"s it going?" or "What"s up?" This is simply a way of saying I see you and I recognize you. Americans also show this friendliness in "small talk". Small talk is a casual conversation that Americans engage in when they meet on the street, in the shop or in the office before a meeting. Usually the topics of such small talk will be something that everyone is familiar with, the weather, sports, traffic, hobbies or what"s on television. The topic of the conversation is not as important as the effort make to spend a few minutes with the other person. Small talk shows that you are a considerate person who is interested in others and who is willing to take the time to get to know people. Small talk is used in the business world to create a friendly atmosphere and to put everyone at ease before the serious matters of business are discussed. Often businessmen will spend a few minutes talking about the weather or sports before a meeting. This form of small talk only lasts a few minutes before the American businessman wants to "get down to business." Asians are very skilled at making casual conversation. However, they often find it difficult to make small talk with Americans because they don"t know what to say, how to say it and who to say it to. Americans may see Asians who are reluctant to make small talk as unfriendly and cold. |
1. American people ask others how it is going because _____. |
|
A. they are curious about others" affairs B. they are eager to help others C. they want to start a long conversation D. they only want to show their kindness |
2. Businessmen talk about weather before a meeting _____. |
[ ] |
A. so that everyone present will feel relaxed B. in order that everyone will be warned against the possible bad weather C. because weather is very important to American people D. in order to make people fresh |
3. The word "reluctant" means _____. |
[ ] |
A. willing B. eager C. unwilling D. skilled |
4. Which of the following is not true according to the passage? |
[ ] |
A. You should keep the conversation short. B. Asians are not friendly and don"t like to talk with others. C. "To get down to business" means to start the work. D. The topics of the small talk are not very important. |

Speaking in public is most people"s least favorite thing. The reason is that we are all afraid of making fool of ourselves. 1_____. But stop biting your finger-nails. Public speaking is easy. It"s just plain talking, and you talk all the time. Although I"m basically shy (honest!). I"ve been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years. And I can tell you that public speaking is not a "gift" like musical talent, so 2_____. Here are some of the lessons I have learned: Your audience is going to go away with one or two of your main ideas. One or two. Not ten or twenty. 3_____. And if you don"t have a clear idea of what you want to say, there"s no way your audience will. 4_____-how you are going to open, what major points you want to make and how you"re going to close. When I do a radio or TV piece, I often write the last sentence first. 5_____. A strong close is critical; the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember. The standard length of a audio-visual act is usually 12 minutes. If all those performers singing and dancing their hearts out couldn"t go on longer without boring the audience, what makes you think you can? |
A. Some people are born to be good at making speech B. Anybody who can talk can speak in public C. Try to relax yourself before making the speech D. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we become E. If you can"t express in a sentence or two what you intend to get across, then your speech is not focused well enough. F. When you know where you"re heading, you can choose any route to get there G. No matter how long or short your speech is, you"ve got to get your ideas organized. |

Forget Twitter and Facebook, Google and the Kindle. Television is still the most influential medium around. Indeed, for many of the poorest regions (地区) of the world, it remains the next big thing-finally becomes globally available. And that is a good thing, because the TV revolution is changing lives for the better. Across the developing world, around 45% of families had a TV in 1995; by 2005 the number had climbed above 60%. That is some way behind the U.S., where are more TVs than people, and where people now easily get access to the Internet. Five million more families in sub-Saharan Africa will get a TV over the next five years. In 2005, after the fall of the Taliban (塔利班), which had outlawed TV, 1 in 5 Afghans had one. The global total is another 150 million by 2013-pushing the numbers to well beyond two thirds of families. Television"s most powerful effect will be on the lives of women. In India, researchers Robert Jensen and Emily Oster found that when TVs reached villages, women were more likely to go to the market without their husbands" approval and less likely to want a boy rather than a girl. They were more likely to make decisions over child health care. TV is also a powerful medium for adult education. In the Indian state of Gujarat, Chitrageet is a popular show that plays Bollywood songs with words in Gujarati on the screen. Within six months, viewers had made a small but significant (有意义的) improvement in their reading skills. Too much TV has been associated with violence, overweight and loneliness. However, TV is having a positive influence on the lives of billions worldwide. |
