题型:不详难度:来源:
My father was a foreman of a sugar-cane plantation(甘蔗种植园) in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. My first job was to drive the oxen that ploughed(耕) the cane fields. I would walk behind an ox(牛), guiding him with a broomstick. For $ 1 a day, I worked eight hours straight, with no food breaks. It was very tedious work, but it prepared me for life and taught me many lasting lessons. Because the plantation owners were always watching us, I had to be on time every day and work as hard as I could. I’ve never been late for any job since. I also learned about being respectful and faithful to the people you work for. More important, I earned my pay; it never entered my mind to say I was sick just because I didn’t want to work. I was only six years old, but I was doing a man’s job. Our family needed every dollar we could make because my father never earned more than $ 18 a week. Our home was a three-room wood shack with a dirty floor and no toilet. Nothing made me prouder than bringing home money to help my mother, father, two brothers and three sisters. This gave me self-esteem(自尊心), one of the most important things a person can have. When I was seven, I got work at a golf course(高尔夫球场) near our house. My job was to stand down the fairway and spot the balls as they landed, so the golfers could find them. Losing a ball meant you were fired, so I never missed one. Some nights I would lie in bed and dreamt of making thousands of dollars by playing golf and being able to buy a bicycle. The more I dreamed, the more I thought. Why not? I made my first golf club out of guava limb(番石榴树枝) and a piece of pipe. Then I hammered an empty tin can into the shape of a ball. And finally I dug two small holes in the ground and hit the ball back and forth. I practiced with the same devotion and intensity. I learned working in the field — except now I was driving golf balls with club, not oxen with a broomstick. 小题1:The word “tedious” in Paragraph 2 most probably means _______.A.easy | B.boring | C.interesting | D.unusual | 小题2:The writer learned that_______ from his first job.A.he should work for those who he liked most | B.he should work longer than what he was expected | C.he should never fail to say hello to his owner | D.he should be respectful and faithful to the people he worked for | 小题3:_______ gave the writer self-esteem.A.Having a family of eight people | B.Owning his own golf course | C.Bringing money back home to help the family | D.Helping his father with the work on the plantation |

小题2:细节题:根据第二段中“I also learned about being respectful and faithful to the people you work for.”可知作者从他的第一份工作学会了对他的雇主要恭敬和诚实守信。故选D。 小题3:细节题:根据第三段中“Nothing made me prouder than bringing home money to help my mother, father, two brothers and three sisters.”可知把钱带回家帮助家人给了作者自尊心。故选C。 |

Any day we wish;we can discipline ourselves to change it a11.Any day we wish;we can open the book that will open our mind to new knowledge.Any day we wish;we can start a new activity.Any day we wish;we can start the process of life change. We can do it immediately,or next week,or next month,or next year. We can also do nothing. We can pretend rather than perform. And if the idea of having to change ourselves makes us uncomfortable,we can remain as we are.We can choose rest over labor, entertainment over education, delusion(幻想)over truth, and doubt over confidence. The choices are ours to make. But while we complain about the effect,we continue to nourish(助长)the cause. As Shakespeare uniquely observed,“The fault is not in the stars, but in ourselves.’’We created our circumstances by our past choices. We have both the ability and the responsibility to make better choices beginning today. Those who are in search of the good life do not need more answers or more time to think things over to reach better conclusions. They need the truth .They need the whole truth .And the responsibility to nothing but the truth. We cannot allow our errors in judgment, repeated every day,to lead us down the wrong path. We must keep coming back to those basics that make the biggest difference in how our life works out.And then we must make the very choices that will bring life, happiness and joy into our daily lives . And if I may be so bold to offer my last piece of advice for someone seeking and needing to make changes in their life—If you don’t like how things are, change it !You’re not a tree. You have the ability to totally transform every area in your life — and it all begins with your very own power of choice. 小题1:The first paragraph tells us that_________.A.no one wants to be disciplined | B.we often need some new knowledge | C.taking activities does good to our health | D.we want to change all the time | 小题2:We may conclude from the second paragraph thatA.whatever happens, we have to change ourselves | B.people tend to nourish the cause of bad results | C.whether we change or not depends on ourselves | D.most choices we made are not good enough | 小题3:From Shakespeare’s words,we know________.A.it is our duty to change for the better | B.we complain a lot about our past choices | C.sometimes we have to face the fate | D.we should believe in ourselves in life | 小题4:In the author’s opinion,if。you want a good life, what you need most is_______.A.self confidence | B.good choices | C.strong wills | D.the truth |

When I was a small boy my family was very poor. My father always used his savings to my mother to visit her parents who lived far away. There was just my younger brother and myself in the house. One evening Dad came home from and there was no food in the house, not a piece of bread. Although we were , my brother and I went to bed without eating anything. My father had no money, but I knew from the on his face that he could not let us have an empty stomach. He the house and about two hours later returned and quickly us up. He had in his hand two small potato pies, which he gave us to eat. I don"t know where he got the but somehow he to get us something to eat. My father had not eaten and had worked all day he sat there with great satisfaction watching us eat. This has stayed in my mind and left more of an impression than any amount of he may ever have given me. At that moment, I felt happy knowing that he was there and would not let us . I guess the I am trying to make is that in difficult times it is not to show weakness but strength and character. If a is the cement (粘合剂) that holds a family together, then the father is that strengthens that cement. It is his values and and memories that have carried me forward and helped me to my own problems in life. In my own I have learned that it is the valuable time you spend with your children and the values you give to them that will remain with them always.

Have you ever heard the saying “If you want a friend, be one”? Here is how a new teacher made friends with the girls and boys in her class on the first day of school. As the bell rang, the teacher smiled at each girl and boy. Then she said in a quiet voice, “Good morning. How nice it is to have all of you in my class this year. I"d like to know each of you. I am sure we will enjoy working together.” Everyone felt that she meant what she said because of her sweet voice and her friendly look. She told the girls and boys her name and wrote it on the blackboard. Then she told them some of the things she liked to do and she was hoping to do with them during the year. Then she said to the class, “Now you know my name and the things I like and I want to know your names and the things you like. Then I will feel that I know you.” Could you make friends by doing the same as this teacher did? One way of getting to know girls and boys in your class is to find out more about them. It is often easy to be friends with those people who have the same hobbies with you. You play the same games and go on journeys together. In the process of my growing up I cannot remember hearing the words ‘‘I love you” from my father. When your father never says them to you when you are a child,it gets for him to say those words as he gets older. In fact,I could not honestly remember when I had last my love to him either.I decided to my pride and make the first .After some hesitation,in our next phone conversation I burst out the words.“Dad...I love you!” There was a silence at the other end and he replied,“Well, same back at ya!” I chuckled and said,“Dad,I know you love me,and when you are ,I know you will say what you want to say.’’ Fifteen minutes later my mother and nervously asked,“Paul,is everything okay?’’ A few weeks later,Dad our phone conversation with the words,“Paul,I love you.’’I was at work during this conversation and the tears were rolling down my cheeks as I “heard’’ the love.As we both sat there in tears we realized that this special moment had taken our father-son relationship to a new .
