When I was 19 years old, I was at a dance club. As we were walking to my car one cold night, a man walked up to us. Behind him was a woman carrying a small child. The child had a jacket on but it wasn’t buttoned up(扣上). The man began to tell us he wanted to borrow some money for the night to get his wife and kid into a hotel. He had a job but no place to live in and was waiting for he first paycheck. He said he could get our mailing address and mail the money back. The guy I was with reached into his pocket to give this man a $20 bill. As the other man was extending his hand out to take the money, I put my hand on my new friends’ hand and said, “ Can I talk to you for a minute?” I told him that every day people asked my mother for money on her way to work. She said they made more money than she did, simply begging for money. These people were scamming those with soft hearts. And if they were truly worried about their child suffering from the cold, they would have at least buttoned his jacket or covered him with his blanket. My new friend looked at me with disappointment and said, “Michelle, I know there are people out there that take advantage of others. I also know there are people out there that are one paycheck away from being homeless. If I give $ 20 to 10 people and only one of them really needs it and uses it for the right thing, it is worth it.” I am now 37 years old and have never forgotten what he said to me. I don’t even remember his name. But I do remember that that experience changed the way I look at different situations. 56. What do we know about the stranger according to the passage? A. He had been begging for a long time near the dance club. B. He would spend the cold night at an expensive hotel. C. He was careless and didn’t take good care of his child. D. She believed her mother had already given the stranger some money. C. She wanted to warm him not to be cheated by the stranger. D. She asked her friend to pay more attention to the baby instead. 58. A wife’s level of education positively influences both her own and her husband’s chances of having a long life, according to a new Swedish study. In the study, researchers from the Swedish Institute for Social Research in Stockholm found that a woman’s level of education had a stronger connection to the likelihood of her husband dying over education. What’s more, they discovered that a husband’s social class, based on his occupation, had a greater influence on his wife’s longevity(长寿)than her own class. “Women traditionally take more responsibility for the home than men do, and, as a consequence, women’s levels of education might be more important for determining lifestyles-for example, in terms of food choices-than those of men,” say Srs. Robert Erikson and Jenny Torssander of the Swedish Institute for Social Research in Stockholm. The results show that a husband’s level of education does not influence his longevity, but that men with partners who had quit studying after school were 25 per cent more likely to die early than men living with women hodling university degrees. In turn, those married to women with university degrees were 13 per cent more likely to die early than those whose wives had post-graduate qualifications. According to the researchers, a woman with a good education may not marry a man who drinks and smokes too much or who drivers carelessly, and men with such habits may not prefer highly educated woman. Drs. Erikson and Torssander also suggest that better-educated woman may be more aware of what healthy eating and good health care consist of. The findings suggest that education has a huge impact on how long and how well people live. It also reflects social factors, since educated individuals usually have better jobs, which allow them to afford healthier diets and lifestyles, as well as better health care. 68. In this passage the author intends to_______. A. encourage women to get higher education B. present the results of a study. A woman with higher education is likely to_____. A. choose a husband with a higher degree than hers. Of all the things that have effects on your future, I believe that personal growth is the greatest. Many people talk about sales growth, profit growth, and possession growth, but none of these will happen without personal growth. In fact I’d like to have you memorize a most important sentence. It is “The key to your future is you yourself.” There are many things that will help you better your future. If you belong to a strong, dynamic(充满活力的)and progressive company, that will help. Good training will help. Strong leadership will help. If the neighbors stay civil(文明的), that will help. If your relatives don’t trouble you, that will help…All these things will help. We can go on and on with the list; but remember, the things that I’ve covered above just play minor(次要的)roles in helping you reach a good future. The major cause doesn’t lie outside. It lies inside. Strangely enough, when two different men work in the same company, the first person may earn $1,000 a month, while the second may earn $10,000 a month. What causes the difference when they have the same job, use the same tools, and get the same training? The cause of the difference lies in believing, in trying, in accepting failures, in thinking, in a smile at people around, and in the ways of dealing with problems. All of these can be major causes of your good future. You can see all these come from inside. In fact, the real difference is you yourself. You are the key to your future. Teens are the most wonderful and important period in life. If you want a great future, begin to improve yourself from now on! 72. During my first stay in the south of France, I rode my bike down a quiet road. Round a corner, I passed by a little old house. In its yard, there was a ruddy (气色好的) -faced woman. I waved at her as I went by, and she must have thought I was some silly tourist, because she didn’t wave back. The same thing happened the second day. But on the third day, the old woman returned a tentative(试探性的)wave, and by the fourth day, she nearly got out of her chair as I called out. “Good morning, Madam!” It became a small ritual (程序) between us. Once she even brought her husband out with her, and they both waved to me. On my last day, my last ride, I cycled down to the little house but the lady wasn’t there. Back at my house, I told Roger, the gardener, of my missed connection. “The old lady has a bad leg,” Roger said, “so she has gone to the hospital for surgery.” “Who is she?” I asked. Roger started to explain: the quiet road used to be a railway. The old lady’ husband was once the stationmaster, and their house was the stationmaster’s house. Several times a day, whenever a train passed, the couple would see the passengers waving excitedly, especially the children for them. However, the station was moved away. Everything is gone except for this couple. It seems that my bicycle was a reminder of the past to her. As Roger said, “ She has missed the trains and the waves. You brought them back to her.” By reaching out, in a way that cost me nothing, I gave more than I realized. 63Which of the following is TRUE? A. She was a ruddy-faced woman so she was healthy. B. Her husband also had leg disease but he didn’t tell others. C. She and her husband didn’t like to live in the station. D. Though she was a ruddy-faced woman, something was wrong with her leg. 64Why did the old woman bring her husband out and waved to me? A. They wanted to go to the hospital. B. They wanted to experience what they used to do. C. They wanted to ask me for dinner. D. They wanted to go to the city by train. 65. What can we infer from the sentence “However, the station was moved away. Everything is gone except for this couple”? A. They enjoyed living where they had lived. B. They had no house to live in. C. They had no children to live with. D. They were living nearest the hospital. 66. What’s the main idea of this passage? A. An old couple and I B. Bicycle and railway C. Train and passengers D. Wave and love |
