Beijing"s battle to correct English-language signs before the 2008 Olympics has started.
By the end of the year, all public "W.C." in the city will be called "toilets". In western countries people
don"t use "W.C", because it is quite rude in English.
Road signs are also on the list. These signs will be changed into real English word. For example, "Dong
Chang"an Jie" will become "East Chang"an Avenue".
But there is still a question. What to do about menus? Thousands of tourists, athletes and reporters will
visit the city, and most of them can"t speak Chinese or understand Chinese characters.
Now linguists (语言学者) are trying hard to translate popular Chinese dishes like "ants climbing the
tree" into good English.
Chinese children will be able to get a taste of adult working life in the Kids City. It will allow children
aged 5 to 10 to try out different jobs after it opens. The world"s first Kids City was opened in Mexico City
in 1999. In 2006, Kids City opened its Tokyo Park in Japan. It became an attraction to kids. Now it will
begin in China. It will offer more than 50 jobs, including pilots, doctors, police officers and lawyers. Inside
the city, every kid would get a bank account (账户) holding special money. And they can only spend the
money in the park. They could earn more money by working in different places.

Mother"s Day and Father"s Day are two big national holidays in many western countries. And it"s
interesting because they are not the same in every country. In England, Mothering Sunday is in March. In America and Germany and other countries, it"s one Sunday in May. Father"s Day is in the middle of June. How do you celebrate Mother"s Day and Father"s Day? Let"s learn something more about it from the
following introduction.
In England, we call Mother"s Day Mothering Sunday, because it"s always on a Sunday. I don"t really
know the origin of it but I remember that my mother had a cup of tea early in the morning. And then we
would go to church. And at the end of the church service, the children would collect a daffodil (水仙花)
and take it back and give it to our mother who would normally be sitting in the service in the church. And
really that"s all we did to celebrate the day.

As Ann said, I remember taking cups of tea to my mother. The idea in general is that the washing-up would be done; perhaps some cooking would be done on Mother"s Day. We would try to relieve her of
all those jobs to make it a special day for her, so that whenever she looked around, there was something
to eat, something to drink, or something to read, or something interesting for her to do.

Father"s Day is always in June, a Sunday in the middle of June. On Father"s Day, the idea is to find
something fun that the children could do with their father together. I remember going to baseball games. I
think that on Father"s Day it"s particularly focused on doing things together because that is supposed to be
relaxing and fun for Dad.
1. In               , Mothering Sunday is in March.

Jogging is basically running at a steady (稳定的) speed over short or long distances. It became
popular twenty years ago and has remained a favorite way of keeping fit for lots of people.
One of the main advantages of jogging over many other sports is that it can be done anywhere.
People jog in parks, in the countryside and even in urban areas. No special equipment is required—no
costly hats, or balls, and no expensive sports kit. Good quality running shoes are advisable. Special
jogging suits are widely available these days and can be bought quite cheaply but are not necessary. In
addition to being able to jog anywhere, you can also jog at any time, in any season! It’s not unusual to
see joggers exercising in the height of summer or in the depth of winter!

The act of jogging doesn’t require any special training or skill. You do need to be basically healthy
and then, after a few basic warm-up bends and stretches, you are ready to begin. You simply start running, gently, and then build up to a steady speed. Do not over-tire yourself by trying to go too fast. It’s best
for you to run at a steady and comfortable speed.
Jogging is a single sport. You don’t need to wait until you have gathered a team or found a partner. You can jog alone. A few words of warning however: lone women joggers should be especially careful
to choose jogging routes, particularly at night time.
Jogging is excellent for keeping fit. It’s good for the lungs, the heart and the circulation. It’s easy
and it’s convenient. Why don’t you try it? If you require more information, talk to one of the instructors at the sports centre. We are only too happy to help. Please remember: if you do decide to jog, talk to your doctor first if you have any health worries. Happy jogging!
1. Is jogging a good way of keeping fit?

2. Which are more necessary for joggers, good quality running shoes or special jogging suits?

3. What is best for us to jog?

4. What’s the writer’s special suggestion to the lone women who decide to jog?

5. What does the writer want to tell us in the passage?
