Welcome to the 2012 London Olympic Games!
Archery
Archery has a 10,000 year history, when bows and arrows were first used for
hunting and war. Archery first appeared at the Paris Olympics of 1990. It was
removed after 1908 and only returned to the Olympics at Munich in 1972.

In the 14th century, archery was so important that as English law required every
man, aged seven to 60, to practise it.
Badminton
This sport was invented by British soldiers in India who called it Poono, the same
name as the town in which they lived. It was first played at the Olympics in 1992
at Barcelona. Although the rules of the modern sport were developed in England,
Asian countries are now the best.

Football
There are two medal competitions for Olympic football, one for men"s teams
and one for women"s. Football was first played at the 1908 Olympic Games

Taekwondo
This Korean sport"s name means"the way of the hand and foot". The players get
points by hitting each other with these two parts of the body only. The players

from Wolong Panda Research Center in Sichuan Province, will be "Universiade Pandas", just like "Asian
Games Pandas" and "Olympic Pandas".
    Shenzhen Safari Park will rebuild its panda house to welcome the pandas. The panda house has been empty
since another panda, Yongba, 25. was returned to Sichuan in 2009 because it was too old.

     More than 200 activities have been held so far during the Chinese Language Year in Russia. It has not
only made Chinese culture popular in Russia, but also improved understanding and friendship between
Russians and Chinese people. More and more Russians begin to enjoy Chinese food and operas, watch TV

     Since the Chinese Language Year program in Russia started, so many events such as movie weeks, operas,
Chinese language classes, language contests and teaching programs have been popular in Russia.
     Through the activities, Russian people have had a chance to leam more about the Chinese culture, literature,
history and its life today. For example, the first group of 500 Russian students visited the Chinese cities of
Beijing, Dalian and Qingdao. There they painted both countries" landmarks, including the Tian" anmen Square,
the Great Wall, the Kremb (克林姆宫), the Volga River and the Red Square. When the Russian students
returned, they took part in a photo contest and a writing contest to show their love for China.
     And Russians, especially young people, have become more and more interested in learning Chinese. To
date, more than 130 universities in Russia are offering Chinese courses. More than 20 middle and primary
schools have also taught Chinese as their first foreign language.
