完型填空。     Much meaning can be carried clearly, with our eyes, so it is often    1    that eyes can speak.
Do you have such kind of    2  ? In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not too long And if he    3
that he is being looked at, he may feel uncomfortable. The same is in daily life. If you are looked at for more
than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down, to see if there is    4   wrong with you. If nothing
goes wrong, you will feel   5   towards the person who is looking at you that way. Eyes do speak, right?
Looking too long at someone may seem to be impolite. But sometimes things are different. If a man looks
at a woman for over 10 seconds, it may mean he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that
he    6   her. When two people are in a conversation, the speakers will only look at the listener from time to
time,    7   make sure that the listener does pay attention    8   what he or she is speaking. Lovers will enjoy
looking at each other or being looked at for a long time, to show something that    9    cannot express.
Clearly, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the place   10
you stay.

Before you go to another country, it"s great helpful if you know the language and some of the customs
of that country.
When people meet each other for the first time in Britain, they say "Hello" or "Nice to meet you" and
shake hands. Usually they don"t shake hands when they just meet or say goodbye. But they shake hands
after they haven"t met for a long time or when they"ll be away from each other for a long time.
Last year a group of German students went to English for a holiday. Their teacher told them the English
people hardly shake hands. So when they met their English friends at the station, they kept their hands

so they put their hands in front and got ready to shake hands with them.It made both of them laugh.

                                                             Do as the Romans Do
The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always
puts more food onto my plates as soon as I have emptied it. That often discomforts me greatly. I have to
eat the food even if I don"t want to, because it is considered bad manners in the West to leave one"s food
on the plate. I have already noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American"s dinner party, he very often
refuses the offer of food or drink though he is in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners
in China, but it is not in the West at all. In the United States, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and
again or insist on his accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something,
they will ask for it. If not, they will say, "No, thanks." When an American is fed with beer by the host, for
example, he might say, "No, thanks. I"ll take some diet, Pepsi-Cola (百事可乐) if you have it. "That is what
an American will do. So when you go to the United States, you had better remember the famous saying:
When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
1. From the passage, we can know that the Chinese are usually ______ to the guests.

[     ]

A. very hot
B. rude
C. impolite
D. cold
2. When a foreigner has dinner with a Chinese host, he often feels ______.

[     ]

3. Why does a Chinese often refuse the offer of food or drink at a dinner party?

[     ]

A. He has had enough.
B. He is shy.
C. He is afraid that others will laugh at him.
D. He thinks it"s polite to do that.
4. When an American wants something to eat or drink at a dinner, he will ______.

[     ]

A. ask for it boldly
B. refuse the offer
C. ask for it directly
D. express himself indirectly
5. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do "means "______".

[     ]

A. When you got to Rome, you should act as the Romans do
B. When you stay in Rome, you should do as the Romans do
C. When you are in a new country, you should do as the locals do
D. Romans can be an example for you

and the culture, you will communicate with its people much easier.

How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin (起源) of language is a
mystery. All we have really known is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express
thoughts and feelings, actions, and the things, so that they would communicate with each other; and that
later they agree upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined (结合) to represent those sounds,
and which could be written down. These sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, are called words. The
power of words, then, lies in their associations (交际)-the things they bring up before our minds. Words
become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us
the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean
something to us increases. Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these
thoughts in words which appeal (具有感染力) powerfully to our minds and emotions (情感). This charming
and telling use of words is what we call literary (文字) style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He
can convey (转达) his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association
can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctly, or
they will make our speech silly and vulgar (粗俗的).
1. According to the writer of the passage, ______.
[     ]
A. men, as well as animals, invented certain sounds to express thoughts
B. the origin of language is a difficult question
C. words did not have written form at first
D. words came from sounds

[     ]
A. use words that can move men to tears
B. choose words with care and accuracy (正确)
C. become a master of words
D. use words which sing like music
3. The best title for this passage would be ______.
[     ]
A. The Meaning of Words
B. The Nature of Words
C. The Invention of Words
D. The Power of Words
