The Internet is a big place. Nobody has the time to look at every webpage to find something. Search engines (搜索引擎) like Yahoo give us a lot of help. Two Stanford University students, David Filo and Jerry Yang started it in 1994. They made a list of their favorite webpages. When their list got bigger, they made a database (数据库) to keep all the information. They let everyone use it for free. Soon, thousands of people were using it. They then made a new kind of software (软件). It looked at web pages all over the Internet. It could then take that information and arrange it for someone to look at. If you look for "animals", the engine will give you a list of web pages with those words. Yahoo became a public (公共的,公开的) company in 1996. Filo and Yang, still young men, became rich. As the company grew, they went on working hard. They improved the software. They also put more uses in, like shopping, free E-mail, booking tickets and so on. They started Yahoo in many different countries and languages. Yahoo. Com is famous on the Internet. And unlike most other web companies, Yahoo really makes money. |

When you are reading something in English, you may often meet with a new word. What"s the best way to know it? You may look it up in the English-Chinese dictionary. It will tell you a lot about the word: the pronunciation, the Chinese meaning and how to use the word. But how can you know where the word is thousands of English words? How to find it in the dictionary both quickly and correctly? First, all the English words are arranged (安排) in the letter order. In the dictionary you can first see the words beginning with letter A, then B, C, D…. That means, if there are two words "desert" and "pull", "desert" will be certainly before "pull". Then if there are two words both beginning with the same letter, you may look at the second letter. Then the third, the fourth… For example, "pardon" is before"plough", "judge" before "just", etc. Do you understand how to look up in the dictionary? The dictionary will be your good friend. I hope you"ll use it as often as possible in your English study. |

New rules and behavior standards for middle school students came out in March. Middle school is going to use a new way to decide who the top kids are. The best students won"t have high marks. They will also be kids who do not dye (染) their hair, smoke or drink. Here are some of the new rules. Tell the truth. Have you ever copied someone else"s work on an exam? Don"t do it again! That is not something an honest student should do. If you"ve played computer games for two hours in your room, do not tell your parents you have done homework. Do more at school. Good students always love animals and care for other people. April is Bird-loving month in China. Are your schoolmates doing anything to celebrate? Join in it! In this way, you can learn more about animals and how to protect them. When more people work together, it makes it more fun for everyone. Have you ever quarreled with your teammates when your basket-ball team lost? Only working together can make your team stronger. Be friendly to the people around you. Try to think of others, not only yourself. Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you"ll discover another Earth some day. Do not look down on new ideas. Everyone"s ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone. Protect yourself. Has someone ever taken money from one of your classmates? Don"t let it happen to you. If you have to go home late, you should take care of yourself and let your parents know. Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your studies. But some things on the Internet aren"t for kids, so try to look at Web pages that are good for you. You can use the Web for fun or homework. Can"t you find any good Web sites for children? During the practice, the football players pass the ball to his teammates over and over again, So they won"t have to think about passing the ball in the game, they will just do it. You can train yourself to think in English in this way. The first (1) _____ is to think _____ the words that you use daily, simple everyday words like book, shoe or tree. For example, whenever you see a"book", you should think of it in English instead of in your mother language. (2) After you have learned to think of words in English, you"d better go on to the next step--thinking of sentences in English. (3) 听是学英语的一个非常有用的方法。 Listen first and don"t care too much about whether you fully understand what you"re hearing. Try to say what you hear as much as possible. The more you listen, the better you learn. After you reach a higher level, start having conversations with yourself in English.
