阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求回答问题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。 [l]Fear and pain are two of the most useful things that human beings and animals have, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play with it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear didn’t, a child would burn himself again and again, because fear would not warn himself to keep away from the fire that had burnt himself before. A really fearless soldier is not a good soldier because he will soon be killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which human beings and animals might soon die out. [2] In our first sentence we suggested that fear should be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: A plane may crash on your house, or you may get cancer! [3] The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but to use fear as your servant and guide instead. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take. [4] In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you. Fear warns you, then you jump out of the way, and all is well. [5] In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to ___________. For example, you can’t prevent a plane crashing onto your house. In this case, fear is no longer of any use, and you have to try to overcome it. 小题1:What is mainly talked about in this passage? Scientists have been studying the reasons why some people don"t like the taste of certain vegetables. They found that people inherit(遗传)some genes from their parents that cause them to like or dislike certain vegetables. In their research about tastes, scientists found that there are three types of people in the world. First, there are non-tasters, who are not very sensitive to sweet-tasting foods or bitter-tasting foods. The people of the second type are just called tasters, and those of the third are super tasters who are very sensitive to sweet and bitter flavors. Children of the third type, who are super-tasters, will probably not like vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprout because of their bitter taste. This is unfortunate, because super-tasters might avoid eating foods that are important for their health. The scientists said that thousands of years ago. On the other hand, super tasters actually had an advantage over other types of people. At that time, super-tasters could avoid eating bitter-tasting poisonous plants which other types of people would eat. From this research about tastes, we learn some interesting things about super-tasters. For one thing, super-tasters have more taste buds(味蕾)on their tongues. And, to super-tasters bitters foods taste very bitter, and sweet foods taste very sweet. Super-tasters might also not like spicy food made with chili pepper, because it would be too hot for them. Furthermore, female supper-tasters probably won"t be very fat, but they do seem to enjoy cooking more than other types of people. 小题1:Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word "spicy". _______________________________________________________________. 小题2:What do scientists call those people who are not very sensitive to sweet-tasting or bitter-tasting foods? The way to get better at listening to English is to listen to English. That’s the not-so-good news. [2] The good news is there are many ways to listen and many things to listen to. [3] Listening to English songs can be fun. But be careful! Most ____________ use the language in a special way that you don’t hear every day. You don’t want to start speaking English like a poet or songwriter. If you do listen to English songs, listen to different ones. Although many Chinese students say they have a good knowledge of English grammar, most would admit(承认) that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to Chinese students, they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” However, their spoken English does not have to remain poor! I would suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English. 2 First, they can’t find suitable words to express themselves because of limited vocabulary. Clearly the better answer is to expand(扩展) their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know. Second, they are afraid of _____________________. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY AND ACCURACY. You want to make yourself understood, to talk to someone in English ,as quickly and as well as you can, even if sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn’t matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and ignore your mistakes. Third, no enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that is heard is necessary for you to start speaking. Fourth, most Chinese students are inactive rather than active language learners. Instead of actively finding opportunities to improve their spoken English, they passively wait for speaking opportunities(机会) to come to them and wonder why their spoken English always remains poor. If you have positive attitude, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go. 小题1:What’s the main idea of the passage? 阅读下面的短文,然后以约 30 个词概括故事的主要内容。 Who says honesty is dead? Last Tuesday morning Alan Reed, a student, was at the bank. He asked to take out $ 50 but the bank clerk mistakenly gave him five twenties instead of five tens. For a few seconds he wondered what to do. Should he give the extra money back? Keep it? If he kept it, he could buy several new books, or he could take his friend Alice to a fancy dinner. Probably no one would ever notice. Besides, this would make up for all the times he’d been overcharged. But then he looked at the clerk. She was a middle-aged woman with a sweet face, and she reminded him of his mother. She had been nice to him, and she looked pressured in her work. Then it occurred to him that the lady would probably get in trouble. Worst of all, Alan felt, he would probably feel guilty about keeping the extra cash. So Alan gave back the money. The bank clerk was so impressed that someone was honest enough to return money not rightfully his that she contacted the newspaper. So there you have it. What would you have done if you’d been in Alan’s position? |
