阅读理解。     A teenager from Thousand Oaks received a warm welcome as he sailed into Marina del Rey on July 16,
2009, becoming the youngest person to circle the globe by sea alone.
Zac Sunderland arrived in Marina Del Rey with his 36-foot boat Intrepid at about 10 am local time. During
his 28,000-nautical-mile journey, he braved storms, equipment failures and a conflict with suspected pirates
(海盗).
"It"s great to be back." Sunderland, of Thousand Oaks, California, said after he was welcomed home by
a group of friends.
Fewer than 250 people have sailed around the globe alone, according to the American Sailing Association,
which certified (证实) Sunderland"s feat.
He left Marina del Rey, just south of Los Angeles, on June 14, 2008, and celebrated his 17th birthday at
sea while off Africa"s Cape of Good Hope.
His return was delayed near the end of his voyage when his boat had a broken bulkhead (舱壁) in rough
seas off Mexico, forcing him to stop at Puerto Vallarta long enough to wait for his father to fly there to make
repairs.
Another tense moment occurred in the Indian Ocean off Indonesia where the Intrepid was approached by
a suspected a pirated boat.
The intruders fled after a plane flew overhead and Sunderland climbed onto his deck with a gun to keep
them off, said Charlie Nobles, executive director of the association.
Sunderland, who remained in contact with his father by satellite telephone during the voyage, threw the
gun away before entering Mexican waters, where it is illegal to carry private firearms.
He becomes the first person under 18 to travel around the globe by sea alone, and the youngest to date.
The previous record-holder was David Dicks of Australia, who completed his voyage in November 1996 at
the age of 18. 1. Which statement about Sunderland"s voyage is TRUE? A. He completed his voyage in about 13 months.
B. He is the first one to travel around the globe by sea.
C. His father flew a plane to drive the pirates off.
D. On June 14, 2008, he reached the Cape of Good Hope. 2. Why did Sunderland stop at Puerto Vallarta? A. To avoid the terrible weather.
B. To delay the time of his return.
C. To wait for help from his father.
D. To avoid the intruders. 3. What is the best title of the text? A. A Brave Young Man
B. The Hardship Sunderland Experienced
C. Who Have Sailed Around the Globe Alone?
D. The Youngest Person to Circle the Globe Alone

On our way back my wife noticed a cupboard outside a furniture shop. It was tall and narrow."Buy it," my
wife said at once. "We"ll carry it home on the roof rack. I"ve always wanted one like that."
What could I do? Ten minutes later I was £20 poorer; and the cupboard was tied on the roof rack. It
was six feet long and eighteen inches square, quite heavy too.
In the gathering darkness I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed unusually polite that evening. The police
even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.
After a time my wife said, "There"s a long line of cars behind. Why don"t they overtake, I wonder?" In
fact a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously as they passed. But then, with
great kindness, they led us through the rush-hour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One
of the officers came to me.
"Right, sir," he said. "Do you need any more help?"
I was a bit puzzled. "Thanks, officer," I said. "You have been very kind. I live just on the road."
He was staring at our car, first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. "Well, well," he said, laughing. "It"s
a cupboard you"ve got there! We thought it was something else."
My wife began to laugh. The truth hit me like a stone between the eyes. I smiled at the officer. "Yes, it"s
a cupboard, but thanks again." I drove home as fast as I could. 1. In fact the husband _____ the cupboard. A. would like very much to buy
B. badly wanted
C. was glad to have bought
D. would rather not buy 2. Other drivers thought they were _____. A. carrying a cupboard to the church
B. sending flowers to the church
C. carrying nothing but a piece of furniture
D. going to attend a funeral at the church 3. The police will be more polite to those who are _____. A. driving in gathering darkness
B. in great sorrow
C. driving with wild flowers in the car
D. carrying furniture 4. What did the husband think of this matter? A. It was very strange.
B. He felt ashamed of it.
C. He took great pride in it.
D. He was puzzled at it.

When Father"s Day comes from around, I think first of my stepfather. Don"t get me wrong. I loved my
biological dad, but he wasn"t much of a father to me. It"s more like Daddy was his name than what he did.
My stepfather is the best kind of dad. He took us fishing, and when I proved too impatient with a fishing
pole, hooking trees, people on the banks...anything but fishing, he patiently taught me to use a cane pole. His
patience eventually taught me patience. He took us camping, hiking and swimming, too; along the way he
taught us about the plants, animals and out of the way places we were discovering. I discovered peace in
nature, too.
The beach was a favorite destination. I remember my stepfather cooking hot dogs and beans on a little
camp stove, often in a sudden shower, always avoiding sand that spread as I ran back and forth. He also
took us to the circus, and I got to ride an elephant and it interested me a lot. We went to Disney World a lot,
often camping in the park. And one year we took an unforgettable five-week trip from Florida to Wyoming,
across the upper states to Indiana, and back down to Florida. He played with us, too, and told us stories. On
summer evenings when I"d been running barefoot all day and he"d patiently dig out the splinters (刺) from my
feet, I knew I was loved.
My stepfather led me to my future husband at my wedding. I insisted I was not nervous as I held his arm
so tightly that my nails left marks. In a few years, he became the best Grandpa imaginable to our three boys-
taking them fishing and camping, fixing them special foods, teasing them…
My stepfather has plenty of interests of his own. He enjoys fishing and camping, he is good at math, and
he is a wonderful gardener and photographer. But he has always taken time to care for his family-even his
instant family-and that"s why I say my stepfather is the best possible Real Dad.
1. The author"s stepfather took her to do all of the following EXCEPT _____.
A. camping, hiking and swimming
B. going to the circus
C. traveling from Florida to Wyoming
D. planting in the park
2. Which of the following description is NOT given about the author"s stepfather?
A. Patient
B. Kind
C. Honest
D. Clever
3. The author left marks on her stepfather"s arm because she was _____.
A. disappointed
B. calm
C. tense
D. sad

I was giving the class when her giggling drew my attention. Walking over to the young troublemaker, I
asked for the note in her hands.
It was a hand-drawn picture of me, teeth blackened, nostrils (鼻孔) upwards, and the words "I"m stupid"
coming out of my mouth. I managed to fold up the picture calmly and continue the class. My mind, however,
was working angrily. I knew the two most likely suspects for drawing the picture. Maybe it was high time
that I taught them a lesson!
Somehow, in the very moment of real hurt and anger, I asked myself very softly, "How can I ever bring
good out of this?"
When there were about six minutes left of the class, I showed the kids the picture. The whole class was
silent. I told them there must be a reason behind such a picture and that now was their chance to tell me the
reason. Then I let them write silently while I stood sadly in the back of the classroom.
Most of them either blamed the artist or felt sorry. But two notes, from the girls I figured were behind the
picture, had a list of issues. I was too mean and too strict. Reading those notes, I realized that where I thought
I was driving them to success I was actually driving them away. I had some apologizing to do.
When the kids walked into my classroom the next day, one boy and one girl each handed me a card. The
one signed by all the boys expressed sincere regret for the ugly joke. The one from the girls asked for
forgiveness. I was extremely surprised and more than a little shameful. I had my little speech all ready to give
to the kids, but they did it before me.
1. What caused the girl to giggle?
A. The funny look of the teacher.
B. The teacher"s interesting lecture.
C. The funny picture about the teacher.
D. The short story written on the note.
2. Why did the teacher give up punishing the students who drew the picture?
A. Because she didn"t want to stop in the middle of the class.
B. Because she didn"t exactly know who drew it.
C. because she didn"t think it would do any good.
D. Because the students" apology removed her anger.
3. The main reason for the students" complaints was that the teacher _____.
A. was too strict with them
B. didn"t five interesting lessons
C. didn"t treat them equally
D. was not kind to them
4. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. Forgiving others is actually helping yourself.
B. It is not right to push students too hard.
C. Teachers should get along well with students
D. Teachers should respect students" choices
