B (BBC News April 18) All flights in and out of the UK and several other European countries have been cancelled as ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland moves south. Up to 4,000 flights are being cancelled with airspace closed in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark among others. The UK’s air traffic control service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in UK airspace until at least 07:00 BST on Friday for fear of engine damage. Safety group Eurocontrol said the problem could last for 48 hours. The volcano is still erupting and the wind direction is expected to continue bringing clouds into UK and European airspace for some time to come. The UK’s airspace restriction was the worst in living memory, a Nats spokesman said. Some 600,000 people are thought to have been affected. Nats suggested that the restrictions were unlikely to be lifted (解除) after 07:00, saying it was “very unlikely that the situation over England will improve in the foreseeable future”. Passengers were advised to contact their carriers before travelling. Transport Secretary Lord Adonis said he was “closely monitoring the situation” and would be meeting with key transport officials on Friday morning. Experts have warned that the tiny particles of rock, glass and sand contained in the ash cloud from the still-erupting volcano could be sufficient to jam aircraft engines. The Health Protection Agency said the ash from the eruption did not bring a significant risk to public health because of its high altitude. However, the British Lung Foundation has warned people with lung conditions to keep their medication (医疗护理) with them as a precautionary measure. These are some of the knock-on effects: ● Eurocontrol says Germany is monitoring the situation and considering partial airspace closures. ● The two main airports in Paris and many others in the north of France are closing. ● There is severe disruption (崩溃) in France and Spain, where all northbound flights are cancelled. ● Nats is due to make an announcement shortly as to the arrangements that will be in place through to 13:00 BST on Friday. ● British Airways offers refunds or an option to rebook after all its domestic flights are suspended. Flybe announces it has cancelled all flights up until 13:00 BST on Friday and more than 25 services due to run after that. British sports teams have been hit by travel problems after flights were grounded. 60. What may passengers do on hearing the news according to the passage? A. They may cancel their international flights. B. They may contact the airlines before traveling. C. They may take measures to protect their lungs from the ash. D. They may stay indoors till the volcanic eruption dies down. 61. Why have some European countries cancelled flights after the volcanic eruption? A. Because the volcanic ash may make passengers ill. B. Because people refuse to take the international flights. C. Because the volcanic ash may jam or damage the engine. D. Because the flights may be hit by the rocks from the eruption. 62. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. All the flights are likely to return to normal in 48 hours. B. British people had experienced a worse airspace restriction before that. C. Germany is monitoring the situation and considering closing all airspace. D. The UK airspace restrictions are unlikely to be lifted in the foreseeable future. |

LONDON, England(CNN)--- The youngest person to sail solo around the world returned home Thursday from his 30,000-mile, 282-day ocean journey. Mike Perham, 17, sailed into Lizard Point in Cornwall, the southernmost point in Britain, at 9:47 a.m., his race team said. “It feels absolutely brilliant,” Mike told CNN by phone hours before crossing the finish line. “I"m really, really excited to be going across the line at last. It doesn"t feel like long since I crossed it first.” Mike set off on his round-the-world trip on November 18, 2008. He has been sailing his yacht single-handedly, though a support team has been sailing next to him along the way. The teen has now achieved the title of Youngest Sailor to Circumnavigate the Globe Solo, according to the Guinness World Records. Mike learned how to sail when he was seven years old from his father, Peter and at age 14, he sailed across the Atlantic alone. The teenager"s school --- which Mike describes as “highly supportive” of his trip --- has redesigned his coursework to fit in with his trip. It also gave him some coursework to do during “quiet moments,” according to Mike"s Web site. There haven"t been many of those quiet moments. Repeated autopilot failures forced him to stop for repairs in Portugal, the Canary Islands, South Africa, and twice in Australia, according to his Web site. Bad weather in the Southern Ocean --- between Australia and Antarctica --- forced Mike to battle 50ft waves and 57 mph winds. He said at one point, a “freak wave” picked up the boat and turned it on its side. “My feet were on the ceiling at the time,” he told CNN. “That was a really hairy moment, and I was certainly thinking, ‘Why am I here?’ But we took the sails off and the day after I thought, ‘This is brilliant!’” Mike describes his father as his biggest hero, always supportive of what he wanted to achieve. Peter Perham said he wasn"t too worried about his son facing dangerous situations at sea, as long as he knew what to do and stayed safe. 49. Mike Perham returned to Britain in ________. A. August B. November C. October D. September 50. Mike Perham is ________ that went on the round-the-world trip in the world up till now. A. the first B. the bravest C. the luckiest D. the youngest 51. China Earthquake Leaves 5,000 Homeless Beijing- An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale left 50,000 people homeless, killed at least one person and injured 39 others in southwest China on Thurday, with more accidents expected. By late Thurday, 4,900 people were declared homeless after the quake destroyed their homes in a mountainous area lying on the border between Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. The dawn quake left one dead and 39 injured, destroyed 268 houses and damaging 1,132 other buildings so seriously that they were considered uninhabitable. Another 2,400 houses suffered less serious damage. The epicenter( 震中 ) was near scenic Lugu Lake, a tourist site, where the local school was severely damaged. KANDAHAR, Afghanistan–-- Afghans burned tires and chanted “Death to America” after U.S troops fired Monday(April 12, 2010) on a civilian bus near Kandahar, killing four people and wounding more than a dozen. Afghanistan’s president accused NATO of breaking its commitment to safeguard civilian lives. The attack angered Afghan officials and the public in Kandahar, the Taliban’s birthplace, and dealt a blow to U.S and NATO efforts to win popular support for a coming offensive to drive the insurgents(叛乱分子) from the biggest city in the south. NATO expressed regret for the loss of civilian lives and said it was investigating. Nearly 200 Afghans blocked highway where the shooting occurred, burning tires, firing weapons and chanting “Death to America” and other slogans. They also called for the ouster (forcing somebody out of a pasition) of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, a Kandahar native who has been appealing for the people here to support the U.S-led campaign against the Taliban. “The Americans are constantly killing our civilians and the government is not demanding an explanation,” protester Mohammad Razaq said. “We demand justice from the Karzai government and the punishment of those soldiers responsible.” Kandahar, a city of about a half million people, is nominally under government control, but the Taliban have stepped up infiltration(浸润), staging attacks and threatening local people. “These foreigners have their enemies, but killing Afghans is not the answer,” said Abdul Hadi, who sells homemade herbal medicine in a public market. He said international forces should publish a schedule of their patrols(巡逻) so Afghans can keep out of the way. “Better yet, I would like to see them leave Afghanistan,” he added. Haji Zahir, who runs a transport firm, said it was time for U.S. and other foreign forces to withdraw from the country. “They say they want to bring security. It is all lies, lies. They kill Afghans. The Kingdome in Seattle was destroyed on March 26,2000.It was taken down to make room for a new stadium. The blast(爆破)from the failing building caused the earth to shake as if an earthquake had happened.
Scientists placed more than 200 earthquake recorders in the earth to measure the movement. They found which parts of the city shook the most. This information helped them know which parts of the city would be damaged in a real earthquake at an early time. A real earthquake happened on February 28, 2001 in Seattle. The Nisqually earthquake was 6.8 on the Richter scale(里氏6.8级).It damaged the same parts of Seattle that scientists had predicted from the pulling down of the Kingdome. It was a plate quake. It started deep in the earth, 37 miles below the surface on the Juan de Fuca Plate.Sometimes, huge plates under the earth cause earthquakes when the plates move against each other suddenly. Scientists have learned that deep earthquakes have very few aftershocks(余震).The Nisqually earthquake had only 4 ones.Another earthquake in California that was close to the surface had over 120 aftershocks.Scientists do not know why the deep earthquakes have fewer aftershocks. Scientists plan to blast in the ground near Seattle with the purpose of testing the plate. The shockwaves from the blast will jump off the plate and give them all idea of where the plate is and how it is moving. This will give them more information in case another real earthquake hits the area. 56.Why were the scientists interested in the pulling down of the Seattle Kingdome? A.To predict what might happen in a real earthquake. B.To see which areas near the Kingdome would shake the hardest. C.To measure the movement of the Earth with earthquake recorders. D.All of the above. 57.What will happen after a deep earthquake according to the scientists? A.There will be little damage. B.There will be many aftershocks. C.There will be very few aftershocks. D.The Richter scale of the quakes will be 6.8 or more. 58.According to the passage, have the most aftershocks. A.deep earthquakes B.shockwave earthquakes C.earthquakes close to the surface D.earthquakes more than 6.8 Richter scale 59.By studying the blast in the ground near Seattle, scientists hope to A.destroy the Kingdome B.learn where the plate is and how it is moving C.find out how many plates there are in the ground there D.know which places are likely to have the most damage |
