Make some noise on May 7 for Music Monday.People in the U.S. and Canada will be celebrating the day by singing and playing musical instruments together. Music Monday is the first day of National Wanna Play Music Week, which runs from May 7 to 13.The National Association of Music Merchants(NAMM) organizes the weeklong celebration every year. This marks the seventh year the organization is teaming up with Canada’s Coalition for Music Education(CME),the group that started Music Monday. “It’s a day to fill the skies with music and bring young people together in song,” CME Executive Director Holly Nimmons said. The CME started Music Monday in 2005.It is held every year on the first Monday of May.It was created to help people realize the importance of music education programs in schools and in communities. The day also celebrates the benefits of playing music for people of all ages. NAMM researches the effects of music on children. They found that playing music has positive effects on thinking skills and on confidence. It also teaches selfdiscipline(自律) and helps kids bond with their peers(同龄人).“Learning musical skills can also help in your studies of other subjects, such as math, reading and language,” Lora Bodmer, who works at NAMM,said. Their studies show that music can also help people form friendships and connect with different groups.Nimmons says anyone can join in on the day,not just those who are musically gifted.“I think that we all have the music in us,and it’s a matter of confidence,” she said.“Sing with other people or beat drums, just enjoy the music.” Participants can turn on the radio to join the fun. Each year a song is assigned to Music Monday. This year the song is “Tomorrow Is Coming” by Luke Doucet. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation(CBC) will be playing the tune at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.People across North America will play or sing the song at the exact same time. The performance is meant to connect people through melody(旋律).More than 700,000 students took part in the concert last year. Schools, afterschool programs, organizations, groups and individuals throughout the U.S. and Canada can all participate in Music Monday.Students who would like to share in the celebration should let their teachers or organization leaders know. But NAMM also encourages people to pick up any instrument and play anytime on the day. 小题1:What can we learn about Music Monday?A.National Wanna Play Music Week begins on Music Monday. | B.People can’t sing every day except on Music Monday. | C.Music Monday will last at least seven days. | D.Students can enjoy music on Music Monday freely. | 小题2:The purpose of National Wanna Play Music Week is to ________.A.advise young people to learn music | B.help students to learn music better | C.get schools and communities closely united | D.call on people to pay more attention to music education | 小题3:Which of the following may be the benefit of music to kids?A.Kids can get rid of many bad habits. | B.Kids are most likely to do well in their lessons. | C.Kids would like to play with other friends more. | D.Kids will get on well with their parents at home. | 小题4:What do the last two paragraphs mainly tell us?A.How people will celebrate Music Monday. | B.What students should do on Music Monday. | C.Why a theme song is chosen for Music Monday. | D.Where the celebration of Music Monday will be held. |

As you can see, water works hard in your body every day. That’s why it’s important to give your body the water it needs to carry out all its different jobs.On a regular day, your body loses 2 to 3 quarts of water—enough to fill a 2liter soda bottle. You probably guess that water is lost when you sweat—especially on a hot day. But your body also loses water in an almost invisible way—evaporation (蒸发).Water escapes from your body through your skin and in your breath. How?Your breath contains droplets (小滴) of water that are usually too tiny to see. They become visible for a quick second in the cold when you can “see your breath”.But water evaporates this way all year round.Your skin also contains water, which escapes in tiny droplets that go into the air.The water in your skin evaporates into the air,but fortunately, your body can replace the water it loses so your skin doesn’t dry out. Eating and drinking is one way to replace the water your body loses. Most foods have a lot of water in them, especially fruits and vegetables.Grapes, watermelons, oranges, and cantaloupes are delicious and full of water. But you can’t rely_on food alone to get that water back, and that’s why it’s also a good idea to drink water every day.You might have heard someone say that people need to drink 6 to 8 cups (1.4 to 1.9 liters) of water each day.Depending on how much water you’re getting from foods and other liquids,6 to 8 cups might not be necessary. If you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables,or you like to eat soup every day, you’ll get some of the water your body needs. 小题1:You should drink enough water every day because________.A.your body needs too much water | B.water does all kinds of jobs in your body | C.your body loses a lot of water every day | D.the more water you drink the better you feel | 小题2:Water in your body loses by the following ways EXCEPT________.A.breathing | B.evaporating | C.sweating | D.eating | 小题3:Your body has to give enough water to your skin in order to________.A.keep the water in your skin clean | B.stop your skin from drying out | C.stop the water from losing | D.keep your skin clean all the time | 小题4:What does the underlined phrase “rely on” in the fourth paragraph mean?A.Eat up. | B.Receive. | C.Depend upon. | D.Digest. |

In today’s throwaway society, dealing with the city’s growing mountain of waste is an increasing challenge for the city council (市议会). Recently,Edinburgh is faced with the problem of disposing of (处理) about 250,000 million tons of waste a year.Despite different ways to dispose of much of it in a green manner—largely through encouraging recycling—its aging facilities such as the Powderhall landfill do not have the ability to deal with it. The European Union (EU) has issued a new policy, regulating how such mountains of waste are to be disposed of.The five councils (Edinburgh,East Lothian,West Lothian,Midlothian and Borders) face fines around £18 million a year from 2013 if they don’t increase recycling levels and rely less on landfill. With this in mind, the councils got together with the idea of building a large incinerator plant (垃圾焚烧厂) to burn half of the waste produced in their districts. But this plan fell apart after the change of target levels by a new UK government waste policy which required that no more than 25% of the city’s waste should be disposed of in this way by 2025. After the plan was abandoned,a private company which already transported millions of tons of the city’s waste by train to a landfill site near Dunbar, offered an alternative solution when it suggested opening a huge waste site near Portobello. Since Powderhall is supposed to close in 2015,it seemed necessary for the members of the Edinburgh Council to accept the suggestion. But soon they turned it down—after 700 local objections reached them—because it would have meant hundreds of lorries a day making loud noise through heavily populated areas. That still leaves the council with a problem.By 2013,only 50% of 1995 levels of waste will be allowed to be sent to landfill.Even if recycling targets are met, there will still be a large amount of rubbish to be burnt up.Due to this,Edinburgh and Midlothian councils have now decided to work together to build an incinerator plant as time to find a solution is fast running out.(2011·湖北,C) 小题1:The main way of handling waste in a green manner in Edinburgh is ________.A.recycling | B.restoring | C.burying | D.burning | 小题2:The five councils worked out a plan to build an incinerator plant to ________.A.reduce the cost of burying waste | B.meet the EU requirements | C.speed up waste recycling | D.replace landfill sites | 小题3:The city council of Edinburgh rejected the suggestion to open a huge landfill site near Portobello because ________.A.it came from a private company | B.the council was not interested in it | C.it was not supported by EU | D.the local people were against it | 小题4:What is the final decision of Edinburgh and Midlothian councils?A.To open a new landfill nearby. | B.To close the Powderhall landfill in 2015. | C.To set up a plant for burning waste. | D.To persuade people to reduce their waste. |
