With the Tesla Roadster and other plug-in(插入式)electric vehicles hitting the road, demand is growing for accessible refueling points to recharge them. Carbon Day Automotive, a Chicago-based company, has now demonstrated a solar-powered recharging point, known as the Solar plug-In Station, which lest motorists easily charge their cars using electricity that has been produced without any environmental damage. The Solar Plug-In Station has gone on show in Chicago as part of the city’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games. According to Carbon Day Automotive, the Solar Plug-In Station on show in Chicago is part of the vital infrastructure (基础设施)required for electric vehicles in Chicago and was the focus of a recent visit by the International Olympic Committee. These solar-powered electricity points will be used daily to fuel the city’s electric vehicles with power from the sun. by producing the electricity from pollution-free solar cell, the CO2 emissions are reduced to zero. “Solar energy and electric vehicles are a partnership that is one more step to reducing our dependence on foreign oil,” says Richard Lowenthal, CEO of Coulomb Technologies. Coulomb Technologies recently developed the components (部件)required for individual recharging stations, marketed as ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations. Carbon Day Automotive is the Midwest distributor for the ChargePoint stations. The Solar Plug-In Station consists of giant solar panels(电池板)that shade the tiny ChargePoint Networked Charging Station. The solar panel is conneceted to an underground battery pack, ready for everyday refueling. “Without these stations it would be like driving around in traditional car without the availability of gas stations,” says Scott Emalfarb, CEO at Carbon Day. “The day of true plug-in electric vehicles will be here sooner than most people realize and the world needs to be ready to accommodate them.” 1.The Solar Plug-In Station is used as part of the bid to host the Olympics mainly because____. Venice, one of the cities in Italy, was founded in A.D.811 by the people of Malamocco, fleeing (逃跑)from the Franks. It was said that they were guided by pigeons carrying little crosses, and settled where now Venice lies. Venice is built on 117 islands. It has 150 canals and 400 bridges. The narrow streets, with their historic names, are covered with stones, but have no footpaths. They are dotted with flower shop signs and lanterns. Shops and palaces stand by side. The brick bridges are high enough to allow boats to pass freely under them. The center of public life is St. Mark’s Square where tourists and citizens sit in the famous Florian and Quadri cafes to listen to music, enjoying themselves. The Quadri is more popular but the Florian, founded in 1720, is the best-known cafe because it has received such great persons as Byron (an English poet) and Goethe (a German poet). Unfortunately the special position of Venice is threatening(威胁)it’s own existence. The terrain(地势)on which it is built began to sink while the level of the surrounding waters is constantly rising. Howe’ver, many measures have already been taken to prevent the city from sinking. 1. In the second paragraph, the author ______. A. showed up where Venice is B. told us who built the city of Venice C. described what Venice is like D. talked about why Venice is surrounded by waters 2. A. many people have fled because Venice’s existence is being threatened B. the level of the surrounding water is constantly rising because the city of Venice began to sink C. the government has already taken many measures to save the city from going down D. many steps have already been taken to prevent the terrain from rising |
For the past year, the World Food Program has operated a project to prevent hunger in twenty-one countries in Africa. In the project, the United Nations agency works with small farmers to grow more and better produce. The World Food Program buys the produce through local cooperative associations. Then it distributes the products within the country or area. The project works mainly with women. Sheila Sisulu from the World Food Program says the project aims to break a cycle that keeps people hungry. The situation is that farmers have to sell their produce at low prices after harvest, when supplies are greatest. Then they have to pay high prices to buy food for themselves during the "lean season," when supplies are limited. But when farmers produce more food, they can sell more. And when they produce high-quality food, they can get higher prices. They can also store food for themselves, and have enough money to buy food if they need to during the lean season. Sheila Sisulu says the farmers are now starting to earn profits through the project. The Food and Agriculture Organization and the International Fund for Agricultural Development help the farmers choose the best seeds and fertilizers. They also advise the farmers on the quality levels that the World Food Program requires to buy their produce. Two other groups recently launched a separate effort to increase food security in Africa. The groups are the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa and the New Partnership for Africa"s Development. They say African governments have to increase their investment in agriculture in order to fight problems related to climate change. The groups want the governments to develop programs in seeds, soil health, policy and markets. Former United Nations chief Kofi Annan is the chairman of AGRA. The group"s president, Namanga Ngongi, says many African governments are not meeting a target of spending ten percent of their national budgets on agriculture. But he says investment has risen from four percent of national budgets to probably five and a half percent today. 1. The underlined word “lean” in Paragraph 2 probably has the same meaning with ______. A. He is a tall, lean and handsome boy, liked by many girls. B. The changes made the company leaner and more competitive. C. The company recovered well after going through several lean years. D. The doctor told him that lean meat was healthier for his mother than fatty meat. 2. According to Sheila Sisulu, the project _____. A. distributes the products within the whole world B. has benefited few African farmers during the past year C. enables the African farmers to sell their produce at low prices after harvest D. can help the farmers to get away from the situation that keeps them hungry 3. The problem of hunger in Africa can possibly be relieved by ______. A. United Nations chief B. the World Food Program C. African governments and farmers D. the Food and Agriculture Organization 4. Which can be the best title? A. Hunger, the most serious problem in Africa B. Two efforts seek to increase food security in Africa C. A project to grow more and better produce in Africa D. More investments in agriculture by African governments |

The Great Wall of China is one of Beijing’s biggest draws for tourists; despite its fame and ubiquity in postcards across the world, it rarely fails to attract tourists at the first proper sight.Yet the authorities open only certain sections of the wall as fit for viewing, and few get to visit the unauthorized sections. Fewer still are aware of the existence of at least one part of the Wall that remains in almost original condition, nearly 1,500 years after construction of legendary fortification began. But there’s a good reason for this – it’s underwater. American journalist Steven Schwankert has been diving since age 10. It was though his setting – up of a diving school that Schwankert came to explore some of lesser – known areas of China’s lakes – and discovered the underwater Wall under a reservoir. “The most fascinating piece of diving I ever did in China must be the Great Wall. I managed to find out about it via the Internet. It wasn’t difficult to get to Pan Jiakou in Hebei Province, near the East Qing Tomb about 4 hour’s drive from Beijing. Why do I want to dive the Great Wall? Why do people want to walk on the Great Wall? It’s the same answer.” There are, however, advantages of visiting the Great Wall in a diving suit over being on foot. The water acts as a preservative by preventing the kind of mass tourism that has brought trouble on other parts of the Wall. “Unlike the people who walk in the Wall, we as divers never need to actually touch it. I’ve dived twice there, the last time in July. I found that the water then was much deeper than it was before – 13 meters deep.” When he first dived, parts of the Wall were visible above the surface. Now even the guard tower is completely submerged. “It’s better that the Wall is deep under water, as there are lots of boats coming in and out around that area. Their wave action could potentially damage the brickwork. So, the deeper, the better.” 1.Steven Schwankert is most interested in . A.collecting photos of the Wall B.walking along on the Wall C.diving the underwater Wall D.visiting some famous lakes 2.What does the underlined word “submerged” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean? A.Damaged by water. B.Washed by water. C.Preserved by water. D.Covered by water. 3.What is the topic discussed in the last paragraph? A.Advantages of walking on the Great Wall. B.Advantages of visiting the underwater Wall. C.The reasons why the Wall is deep under water. D.The reasons why the underwater Wall is protected. 4.What can we infer from the text? A.The underwater Wall will sink deeper year by year. B.Diving the Wall is popular with divers all over the world. C.Diving is a good way to visit the Wall without causing much damage. D.More and more tourists will come to visit the underwater Wall in China. |
第三部分阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) 请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。 John Davis doesn’t use his GPS system in his car. Instead of guiding the direction, the Delaware farmer uses it to determine where and how much fertilizer to use on the crops on his 4,000-acre family-owned farm. Technological advances like that last year helped Davis and other Ohio farmers set a record for corn product. Ohio"s corn crop in 2009 totaled 546 million bushels(蒲式耳), despite a cooler and wetter than normal spring, a dry summer and a delayed, wet harvest. Davis said. “I knew it would be a good crop, but it was much better than we expected.” A farmer can map his fields on GPS, spotting where soil turned out to be least fertile(肥沃的) and using more fertilizer the next year in those areas where corn didn’t grow as well. Although Ohio farmers produced more corn, it was grown on less land than in past years. Total area used for corn in Ohio was 3.35 million acres, about the same as in 2008 but down from 3.85 million acres in 2007, said Dwayne Siekman, director of the Ohio Corn Growers Association. “When you look at the total number of acres in Ohio used for corn, it’s clear that farmers are able to do more with less,” he said. “American farmers can grow five times more corn on 20 percent less land than they did in the 1930s, saying that modern farming techniques are necessary for a growing demand in the world today.” That technology includes using improved seeds that can withstand(忍受) greater temperature extremes and pests, Siekman said. Farmers aren"t the only ones who benefit. Consumers(消费者) do, too, as food costs reduce in the face of “enough supplies of corn,” said Fred Yoder, who runs a 1,500-acre corn, soybean and wheat farm in Plain City. “This is the best, highest-producing corn crop that I"ve raised in 30 years,” he said. 1. Most people usually use the GPS system for ______. A. driving their cars B. telling the position C. mending the car D. supplying the sunshine 2. The farmers in Ohio use GPS to ______. A. check if the soil is fertile in some areas B. control the rain of the place C. water the crops if the weather is dry D. draw the map of all the crops 3. Why did Ohio farmers produce more corn? A. Because they expanded more land to grow corn B. Because they turned to technological advances C. Because they used more and more fertilizer. D. Because they supplies themselves with more money. 4. From the passage, we can know _____. A. John Davis hadn’t expected a good harvest. B. farmers grew less land than in the 1930s C. improved seeds cost much more money D. the output of corn in the same field is increased. |
