Information has always been at the center of human communication. You may ask why. Well, communication between people contains giving and receiving information. The way we give and receive information today has experienced a revolution in the development of the mass media in the 20th century. The first truly mass communication medium was the newspaper. For the first time in history people could read about events in their country and from around the world every day. However, there were two problems with newspapers of that time. Firstly, newspapers were available only in large cities, for getting newspapers to the countryside was a difficult and timeconsuming (耗时的) task. Secondly, newspapers weren"t always reliable, as there was a limited range of opinions. Nowadays, we can choose from a wide variety of sources to get information. Television and the Internet have given us the chance to be informed about everything the minute it happens. Large numbers of radio and TV stations, satellite channels and millions of websites help people keep up with the latest news. People live in history and are part of it. The media have come a long way in the last century and there is no doubt that we now live in the information age. Whatever type of media we choose, it all comes down to the need for information. This will always be a basic need as long as communication is part of human nature. |

It"s no secret that the world has become a very fastpaced place. Free time has been replaced by cyber (网络的) time to the point where my family feels the need to comment on my presence at the dinner table. With all these options and distractions (使人分心的事) it can be hard to spend quality time with the people you love. My Dad and I have always worked around this. Over years we"ve learned how to watch in silence while enjoying each other"s company and by now we know what to comment on during the commercials. Once we were watching one of our favourite shows. At the commercial he turned to me and asked if I liked going to school. I thought about the question for a few moments before admitting that I did. "Do you look forward to going?" This question seemed easier to answer, but I thought it over. "Not all the time. Sometimes, there are classes that I dread. But then there are people I want to see or things I want to do, so I guess it evens out." Dad nodded. "You see these characters on the show? They like going to work. They look forward to it. They are so idealistic that they go to work every day, believing they can change the world. That"s why we like to watch them." I thought about what he was saying. "Do you look forward to going to work?" I asked. Dad paused. "I honestly don"t think about it. It"s not something I anticipate or dread. It"s just something that I do. I always looked forward to going to school, though. I wanted to learn. Now that I think about it, when I first started working I did look forward to it. That"s what"s important. Do something that you enjoy doing. Do something that you will look forward to. Otherwise, what"s the point?" Now I have learned that sometimes it"s not the length of the talk that"s important but what"s said during the talk. It is still possible to have quality time during a commercial break. |
1. The father quoted the characters on the show to say that a person should have ________. |
A. dream B. belief C. doubt D. love |
2. According to the passage, why doesn"t the boy want to go to school? |

3. The underlined word "point" means ________. |
A. mark B. topic C. lesson D. goal |

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don"t give friendship back. That is why some friendships do not last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules. Be honest; be generous; be understanding. Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find it out. If a friend finds out that you haven"t been honest, you may lose your friends" trust. Good friends always believe in one another as they always speak and act honestly. Generosity means sharing, which makes a friendship grow. People do not have to give lunch money for clothes, of course. Instead you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, like your hobbies and your interest. Then, naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know you better. Sooner or later, every one needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend"s place so you can understand the problem better. No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity, and understanding. |

As the capital of Germany, Berlin is a city changing constantly-and especially so over the past 20 years, during which its eastern and western sides have been reunited after the long period of division (分裂). Berlin impresses visitors with a dynamic cultural identity with green spaces, flowing rivers and canals; it is a city full of artistic atmosphere and youthful vitality (活力). Berlin offers excellent food at reasonable prices, bars and cafes where breakfast can be served until late into the afternoon. As people here demonstrated perfectly when the Wall came down 20 years ago, Berlin is also a city that knows how to party. British Airways (0844 493 0787; www. ba. com), has five flights a day from Heathrow to Berlin. The Grand Hyatt (0049 30 2553 1234; www. berlin, grand. hyatt. com) on the Marlene Dietrich Platz in the glitzy new Potsdamer Platz, is a great place to get a sense of this fastmoving city. Sixty years ago, this spot was Berlin"s answer to Piccadilly Circus; 20 years ago it was a forbidden piece of noman"s land. Now it is a buzzing commercial center with restaurants, bars and cinemas. The Grand Hyatt is modern, graceful and arty. It has a bar with more than 200 kinds of whisky and a swimming pool with views on to Berlin Philharmonic (交响乐团). Rooms from 220 euros. Too modern? Traditionalists should head for the Adlon (0049 302 2610; www. hoteladlon. de; doubles from 220 euros, excluding breakfast), a stone"s throw from the Brandenburg Gate. Too expensive? The Circus Hotel (www. circusberlin. de) in Berlin Mitte has doubles from 68 euros a night and a programme of Berlin Wallrelated tours. Further information...
