The speaker, a teacher from a community college, addressed a sympathetic (赞同的) audience. Heads nodded in agreement when he said, "High school English teachers are not doing their jobs." He described the inadequacies of his students, all high school graduates who can use language only at a grade 9 level.I was unable to determine from his answers to my questions how this grade 9 level had been established. My topic is not standards nor its decline. What the speaker was really saying is that he is no longer young; he has been teaching for sixteen years, and is able to think and speak like a mature adult. My point is that the frequent complaint of one generation about the one immediately following it is inevitable. It is also human nature to look for the reasons for our dissatisfaction. Before English became a school subject in the late nineteenth century, it was difficult to find the target of the blame for language deficiencies (缺陷).But since then, English teachers have been under constant attack. The complainers think they have hit upon an original idea. As their own command of the language improves, they notice that young people do not have this same ability. Unaware that their own ability has developed through the years, they assume the new generation of young people must be hopeless in this respect. To the eyes and ears of sensitive adults, the language of the young always seems inadequate. Since this concern about the decline and fall of the English language is not perceived (察觉) as a generational phenomenon but rather as something new and peculiar (特有的) to today"s young people, it naturally follows that today"s English teachers cannot be doing their jobs. Otherwise, young people would not commit offenses against the language. |
1. The speaker the author mentioned in the passage believed that ________. |
A. the language of the younger generation is usually inferior (差的) to that of the older generation B. the students had a poor command of English because they didn"t work hard enough C. English teachers should be held responsible for the students" poor command of English D. he was an excellent language teacher because he had been teaching English for sixteen years |
2. In the author"s opinion, the speaker _______. |
A. had exaggerated (夸大) the language problems of the students B. gave a correct judgment of the English level of the students C. was right in saying that English teachers were not doing their jobs D. could think and speak intelligently |
3. The author"s attitude towards the speaker"s remarks is _______. |
A. neutral B. positive C. compromising D. critical |
4. It can be concluded from the passage that ________. |
A. it is justifiable (有理由的) to include English as a school subject B. the author disagrees with the speaker over the standard of English at Grade 9 level C. language improvement needs time and effort D. language teaching is by no means an easy job |
5. In the passage the author argues that _______. |
A. young people would not commit offences against the language if the teachers did their jobs properly B. it is unfair to blame the English teachers for the language deficiencies of the students C. to eliminate (消除) language deficiencies one must have sensitive eyes and ears D. to improve the standard of English requires the effort of several generations |

True friends double your happiness and half your burdens. Basically how you would like a true friend to be is what you should be like to your true friends. Trust, forgiveness, responsibility are some elements of a true friendship. True friendships are hard to achieve. And what"s more, life is short. So treasure these friends if you already have them. If you don"t continue to search, because once you have them, life will become so much easier to live, no matter what happens. I have been through very difficult times and I dare say, without my friends, I would not have made it. Friendships need lots of energy and patience to maintain them. Not to mention time. When your friend needs you, and when things are not going too well on your side, it is often so easy to turn a deaf ear to their requests. It is especially during these times, that you must find the strength to help your friend. And it is during these times that your friendship will be made stronger. And you must always be happy for their successes, even when things are not going too well for you. It might be hard to do this, but it is something that you need to learn. Think about all the sacrifices your friend has made for you and all the times when he was happy for you despite his own troubles. Think abut all the happy times you enjoyed and the sad, difficult times you went through together. That should give you plenty of patience to actually be a true friend. Remember, true friends are the next best thing to family. They will always be your supporters. |

Others may have better achievements than you, and no matter how hard you tried. It might seem impossible for you to match them. You might then think that it"s because you are not smart enough or don"t have enough talents. All these give reasons to you not to like yourself. Fortunately, there are always things you can do to fix the situation and achieve success in your life. Here are some tips: 1) Forgive yourself You may have made mistakes in the past, but you can learn from them. It"s true that you are not perfect, but neither is everybody else. It"s normal to make mistakes, so do yourself a favor by giving yourself forgiveness 2) Accept things you can"t change There are some things you cannot change. So learn to accept them. You will feel much relieved if you treat things you can"t change the way they deserve: just accept them, smile, and move on. 3) Focus on your strengths Instead of focusing on your weaknesses, focus on your strengths. You always have some strength which gives you a unique combination nobody else has. Recognize your strengths and build your life around them. 4) Write your success stories Sometimes, we are so focused on what we don"t have that we forget about what we have. So write your success stories. They do not have to be big things; there are a lot of small but important achievements in our life. 5)Stop comparing yourself with others You are unique. You can never be like other people, and neither can other people be like you. The way you measure your success is not determined by other people and what they achieve. Instead, it is determined by your own life purpose. You have everything you need to achieve your life purpose, so it"s useless to compare yourself with others.

All people have dreams and they obey the rule that if you can dream it, you can achieve it!Here are four goals for people to reach a perfect life in their future. The first goal common to all of us is health and energy. We all want to be healthy and fit, to have high levels of energy and to live free of pain and illness. Today, with the incredible advance in medical science, the quality of our health and fitness, and our lifespan is largely determined by design, not by chance. People with excellent health habits are far healthier, have more energy, and live longer and better than people who have poor health habits. Remember that health is not everything, but without health everything is nothing! The second goal that we all have in common is to enjoy excellent relationships-intimate, personal or social-with the people we like and respect, and who in turn. Fully 85% of your happiness will be determined by the quality of your relationships at each stage, and in each area, of your life. How well you get along with people, and how much they like and respect you, have more impact on the quality of your life than perhaps any other factor. The third common goal is to do work that we enjoy, to do it well, and to be well paid for it. You want to be able to get and keep the job you want, to get paid more and promoted(晋升)faster. You want to earn the very most that is possible for you at each stage of your career, whatever you do. The fourth goal we all have in common is to achieve financial independence. You want to reach the point in life where you have enough money so that you never have any financial worries. You want to be completely free of them. You want to be able to order dinner in a restaurant without referring to the price listings to determine what you want to eat. |

The book is like a biography (自传) of a summer in Tom Sawyer"s life. Tom Sawyer is a smart but naughty young boy living in the small town on the Mississippi River. He is an orphan and lives with his aunt. He has many clever ideas, but doesn"t like school, and always likes to escape the school to fish. Tom has a trusted friend,Huck Finn, who few of the adults approve of. Tom Sawyer and Finn have great adventures on the Mississippi River, pretending to be pirates, attending their own funeral, and witnessing a murder. Tom overcomes fear and appears in court and speaks out the murderer. He and his friends finally discover a lot of treasures and they become millionaires... Mark Twain"s writing was based on his own childhood and his personal experience. What makes this story great is that Tom Sawyer represents everything that is great about childhood. It is a story filled with action, adventure, ingenious (巧妙的) ideas, love, and schoolyard politics. The whole story is seemingly a complication of what Twain did or wishes he did during his childhood. The book is a little difficult to read at first. Perhaps,it will take you a little while to get used to the 19th century dialect in the book. But on the whole, the book is an enjoyable read for people of all ages. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking forward to feeling young again. | 1.Which of the following doesn"t fit in with Tom? | A. He often escapes the school. B. He has a trusted friend. C. He is a good student. D. Both of his parents died when he was young. | 2. According to the passage, the story is concerned with the following things EXCEPT _____ . | A. love B. schoolyard politics C. action D. power | 3. The author"s purpose of writing this passage is to ____. | A. let readers know Mark Twain B. remind people of their childhood C. tell the story of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer D. recommend the book to others | 4.
