Running, as most of you already know, is a sport that all sorts of people love. Running a marathon is also something that many long-distance runners have as a goal. Now if you decide you want to train for a marathon, how do you go about getting yourself into excellent shape for the race of your life? Most marathon training schedules last around 20 weeks and are designed for runners who can run 4-5 days per week. The secret of a successful training schedule lies in avoiding injury that can happen through pushing yourself too fast or too hard. So, the idea is to increase your mileage gradually from, let"s say,20 miles per week up to runs of 50 miles per week at some point before the actual marathon. Alternate (交替) hard days with easy days: an easy day could be a day off altogether or something else like a three-mile run which, although it might not seem to be really worth the effort to some of you, actually is a joy to do. Be careful how you warm up and slow down, because these are the times when injuries could happen. When you set off for a run, take the first mile slowly and when you break into a sweat, stop and do some stretching exercises for a couple of minutes. Always take the last mile slowly too-if you stop suddenly after a hard run, then those of you who might have heart attacks are putting yourselves at greater risk at the point. One word of warning: don"t start a training schedule without some guidance from a properly qualified trainer. He or she will be able to tell you what you"re doing right or wrong! Remember that under normal circumstances, health benefits from regular running are an increased sense of energy and well being, together with fitness. |

In the past industries had more freedom than they have now, and they did not need to be as careful as they must today. They did not need to worry a lot about the safety of the new products that they developed. They did not have to pay much attention to the health and safety of the people who worked for them. Often new products were dangerous for the people who used them; often conditions in the work place had very bad effects on the health of the workers. Of course sometimes there were real disasters which attracted the attention of governments and which showed need for changes. Also scientists who were doing research into the health of workers sometimes produced information which governments could not ignore. At such times, there were inquiries into the causes of the disaster or the problems. New safety rules were often introduced as a result of these inquiries; however, the new rules came too late to protect the people who had died or become seriously ill. Today many governments have special departments which protect customers and workers. In the U.S., for example, there is a department which tests new airplanes and gives warnings about possible problems. It also makes the rules that aircraft producers must follow. Another department controls the foods and drugs that companies sell. A third department looks at the places where people work, and then reports any companies that are breaking laws which protect the health and safety of workers. |

The gray-haired lady can"t wait to leave the building to search for her dad. Unless watched, she will walk in the streets in an effort to find her father, who died 30 years ago. Not all cases of Alzheimer"s disease look like this, but Alzheimer"s is a serious disease that is said to be the fourth or fifth leading cause of death for people over age 75. It is said that about three percent of the U.S. population over age 65 have Alzheimer"s. In the early stages, people may exhibit short term memory loss. Some may experience changes in personality, easy to be angry. As the disease progresses, patients might lose the ability to move and may be unable to speak or move at all. This progressive disease generally lasts 8 to 10 years before death occurs. While no one is certain what causes these changes in the brain"s nerve fibers, their effect is certain. Alzheimer"s destroys not only the patients, but also spouses (配偶), friends and families. What should you do if you notice progressive memory loss in yourself or a loved one? Have the person examined by a doctor who is a specialist in the treatment of Alzheimer"s disease. Though many reasons other than Alzheimer"s disease may cause memory loss, its early diagnosis (诊断) and treatment may delay some of the most serious effects. What feeling will you likely experience should a loved one suffer from Alzheimer"s disease? A person will often go through the various stages of sadness, shock, anger, and so on. If the spouse develops the disease, you may experience hurt and disappointment when he or she doesn"t remember you are married. Life for the Alzheimer"s patients and their loved ones will never be the same as the disease progresses, bringing a deep sorrow, loss and even anger towards God. No matter what feelings are present, facing them honestly will serve one better than burying them. |

"Just five more minutes." "I"m tired!" "I can"t get up." If you have ever had trouble getting up in the morning, you are not alone. Many kids in the United States do not get enough sleep. Your body needs sleep-and lots of it! "Evidence (证据) shows that elementary-age children need at least nine hours of sleep per night," said sleep expert Dr. Carl Hunt. Kids who do not sleep enough cannot do their best, experts say. A tired kid may be moody and act badly. Being tired can also cause kids to forget things, have trouble learning, and have trouble playing sports. Not sleeping enough can also affect kids" safety. Experts say children who are tired are more likely to suffer injuries. Lots of kids lose sleep because they are busy. Many take part in after-school activities. Then they go home, eat dinner, and do homework. Afterward, many kids watch TV, play video games, and surf the Internet. That leaves less time for sleep. Sometimes you may not be able to go to bed early. But, if you get a choice whether to stay up late, think twice. A good night"s sleep can help you feel your best! |

"Old wives tales" are beliefs lasting for many generations. For example, most of us remember our parents" telling us to eat more of certain foods or not to do certain things. Is there any truth in these teachings? Some of them agree with present medical thinking, but others have not passed the test of time. Did your mother ever tell you to eat your carrots because they are good for your eyes? Scientists now report that eating carrots can help prevent a serious eye disease called macular degeneration. Eating just one carrot a day can reduce the possibility of getting this disease by 40%. Garlic is good for you, too. It can kill the type of virus that causes colds. Unfortunately, not all of Mom" s advice passed the test of medical studies. For example, generations of children have been told not to go swimming within an hour after eating. But research suggests that there is no danger in doing so. Do sweets cause tooth problems? Well, yes. However, sticky sweets made with grains tend to cause more problems than sweets made with simple sugars. Even though science can tell us that some of our traditional beliefs don"t hold water, there is still a lot of truth in the old wives" tales. After all, much of this knowledge has been accumulated from thousands of years of experience in family health care. We should respect this body of knowledge even as we search for clear scientific support to prove it true or false. |
