The gray-haired lady can"t wait to leave the building to search for her dad. Unless watched, she will walk in the streets in an effort to find her father, who died 30 years ago. Not all cases of Alzheimer"s disease look like this, but Alzheimer"s is a serious disease that is said to be the fourth or fifth leading cause of death for people over age 75. It is said that about three percent of the U.S. population over age 65 have Alzheimer"s. In the early stages, people may exhibit short term memory loss. Some may experience changes in personality, easy to be angry. As the disease progresses, patients might lose the ability to move and may be unable to speak or move at all. This progressive disease generally lasts 8 to 10 years before death occurs. While no one is certain what causes these changes in the brain"s nerve fibers, their effect is certain. Alzheimer"s destroys not only the patients, but also spouses (配偶), friends and families. What should you do if you notice progressive memory loss in yourself or a loved one? Have the person examined by a doctor who is a specialist in the treatment of Alzheimer"s disease. Though many reasons other than Alzheimer"s disease may cause memory loss, its early diagnosis (诊断) and treatment may delay some of the most serious effects. What feeling will you likely experience should a loved one suffer from Alzheimer"s disease? A person will often go through the various stages of sadness, shock, anger, and so on. If the spouse develops the disease, you may experience hurt and disappointment when he or she doesn"t remember you are married. Life for the Alzheimer"s patients and their loved ones will never be the same as the disease progresses, bringing a deep sorrow, loss and even anger towards God. No matter what feelings are present, facing them honestly will serve one better than burying them. |

"Just five more minutes." "I"m tired!" "I can"t get up." If you have ever had trouble getting up in the morning, you are not alone. Many kids in the United States do not get enough sleep. Your body needs sleep-and lots of it! "Evidence (证据) shows that elementary-age children need at least nine hours of sleep per night," said sleep expert Dr. Carl Hunt. Kids who do not sleep enough cannot do their best, experts say. A tired kid may be moody and act badly. Being tired can also cause kids to forget things, have trouble learning, and have trouble playing sports. Not sleeping enough can also affect kids" safety. Experts say children who are tired are more likely to suffer injuries. Lots of kids lose sleep because they are busy. Many take part in after-school activities. Then they go home, eat dinner, and do homework. Afterward, many kids watch TV, play video games, and surf the Internet. That leaves less time for sleep. Sometimes you may not be able to go to bed early. But, if you get a choice whether to stay up late, think twice. A good night"s sleep can help you feel your best! |

"Old wives tales" are beliefs lasting for many generations. For example, most of us remember our parents" telling us to eat more of certain foods or not to do certain things. Is there any truth in these teachings? Some of them agree with present medical thinking, but others have not passed the test of time. Did your mother ever tell you to eat your carrots because they are good for your eyes? Scientists now report that eating carrots can help prevent a serious eye disease called macular degeneration. Eating just one carrot a day can reduce the possibility of getting this disease by 40%. Garlic is good for you, too. It can kill the type of virus that causes colds. Unfortunately, not all of Mom" s advice passed the test of medical studies. For example, generations of children have been told not to go swimming within an hour after eating. But research suggests that there is no danger in doing so. Do sweets cause tooth problems? Well, yes. However, sticky sweets made with grains tend to cause more problems than sweets made with simple sugars. Even though science can tell us that some of our traditional beliefs don"t hold water, there is still a lot of truth in the old wives" tales. After all, much of this knowledge has been accumulated from thousands of years of experience in family health care. We should respect this body of knowledge even as we search for clear scientific support to prove it true or false. |

In 2004, the World Health Organization, WHO, warned of a possible outbreak of another serious disease which may be even more deadly than SARS. The WHO believes that it is likely that bird flu will spread to human beings in the next few years. If it does, up to seven millions people could die from the disease. Diseases like bird flu are caused by viruses, that is, tiny things which change and become more dangerous over time. When a new type of a common virus changes, it may be able to get past the body"s immune (免疫 的) system. If that happens, humans are in great danger until a cure or treatment becomes available. There have always been viruses and people always get sick, of course, but as we saw with SARS, the situation is more difficult today. People travel more than ever before, which means that disease can spread quickly and across large areas-in fact the whole world. Scientists are already working on drugs that will prevent or limit the effect of a new virus, but the process takes time. It is just as important to make sure that countries, especially poor countries, are prepared to deal with the disease. New disease usually affect poor areas the most, so we must help develop health care in all countries. |

Businesses are witnessing a difficult time, which has in turn produced influence on consumers" desire to go green. However, shoppers are still laying stress on environmental concerns. Two thirds of customers say that environmental considerations inform their purchases to the same degree as they did a year ago, while more than a quarter say that they are now even better aware of the environmental effect on what they buy. This may help to influence how shops store goods on their shelves. And the companies should still make efforts to become more environmentally friendly. Two out of three people think it is important to buy from environmentally responsible companies, with about one in seven saying that they had even decided to take their custom elsewhere if they felt a company"s environmental reputation was not good enough. Harry Morrison, chief executive (主管) of the Carbon Trust, sympathizes:"I understand this situation where survival is very important now. But from environmental considerations, the clock is ticking-we don"t have much time. In addition, cutting carbon has an immediate effect as costs drop and a medium-term benefit for the brand." Larger companies have an extra motivation to look at reducing their carbon footprint, as new rules next year will require businesses to buy carbon allowances to make up for their emissions (排放). Those that have taken early action will have a head start. More than two thirds of consumers are not clear about which companies are environmentally responsible. This suggests that firms that are able to relay clearly their message to the public will be in a pole position to attract shoppers. The Carbon Trust believes that it can help by informing customers about the good work companies are doing. "When companies are granted (授予) the standard, they can use a logo (标识) in all their marketing which makes it clear that they are working towards cutting emissions," Mr. Morrison said. |

[ ] |
A. Businesses are finding ways to send their message to the shoppers. B. Companies will soon get information about cutting carbon emissions. C. Firms are making efforts to encourage customers to keep goods at home. D. Firms are urged to cut carbon emissions by shoppers" environmental awareness. |
