It was a bright Saturday morning. I stopped at a café to enjoy a cup of coffee and read the morning newspaper. Suddenly, I felt a hand on the back of my jacket and heard someone say, “Hey Steve! How are you doing?”
Looking back, I saw a man. He looked familiar, but I couldn’t remember where we had met.
The young man also held a cup of coffee, so I asked him to join me. Very soon, his story began to thaw out my memory.
Five years earlier, Johnson was traveling home late on a February night. A heavy snow had arrived that afternoon, and by midnight, the snowdrifts(雪堆)were getting deep. His car was stuck in a snowdrift just down the road from my house.
He walked to my house for help. I helped him pull his car out of the snowdrift and up to the street where the snow had been cleaned away.
This was a normal happening here during the winter. I couldn’t count the times someone has helped me to pull my car from a snowdrift. However, it was an unforgettable experience for him. He was only eighteen at that time, and he said he was very afraid. No one wants to be stuck in a snowdrift at night.
Sometimes, one simple kindness at the right moment can change the direction of a life. So, be kind and helpful.

This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. As I searched the name, I found that there were two famous people having the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts(花生), while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice; let the coin decide. I flipped(掷) a coin and Ah! Tails (背面)! My report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.
Weeks later, I stood in front of the classroom and proudly read my homework. But things started to get strange. I looked around the room, only to find my classmates with big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes and my stone-faced teacher. I was completely lost. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”
Oh well, I dropped the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American War of Independence.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that my teacher meant that George Washington?
Of course, my subject result was awful. Sad but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to the headmaster Miss Lancelot, but she said firmly: No re-dos; no new score. I felt that it was not fair, and I believed I deserved a second chance. So I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, I sat in the headmaster’s office again, but this time a completely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the terrible moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster told me I was good enough to skip(跳过) the 6th grade and started the 7th grade next term.

And I had often been to France, so I was used to speaking a foreign language to people who didn’t understand French. I believed that I wouldn’t have any       problems when I went to America. So I was really looking forward to having a nice easy holiday there.
How          I was! The misunderstanding (误解) began at the airport. I was looking for a public telephone to call my friend Danny who had been in America for two years and told her that I had arrived. A friendly old man saw me looking confused and asked if he could          me.
“Yes,” I said, “I want to give my friend a ring.”
“Well, that’s nice,” he said. “Are you getting married ? But aren’t you a bit too       ?”
“Who is talking about marriage?” I replied. “I just want to give my friend a ring to tell her I’ve arrived. Can you tell me          the phone box is?”
“Oh! I see. ” he said, “there’s a phone downstairs.”
When Danny and I met up, she explained the misunderstanding to me.

I used to have little passion(激情,热情)in my life. But what happened the other day changed my mind. It was then that I learned how        it is to have a passion in life.
That day I went home in Mom’s car. When Mom        at a red light, someone on the side of the road caught my eye. It was a man dressed        rags. He was homeless. That didn’t interest me, because I had seen         like him before. Those people usually looked unhappy and hopeless.
But this man was        in some way. He was not sitting down with a        expression. Instead, he had a         in his hand and was dancing happily to the music. The radio seemed to be the most precious thing he had.
“Mom, why does that man have a radio        he’s homeless?” I asked.
“He       it, “ she replied.
“But why doesn’t he use the money to buy food or clothes? He       something that he didn’t need.”
“Well, Sarah, sometimes food and clothes aren’t the most important.”
That man must care so much about        that he bought a radio instead of food or clothes. I soon realized that        is the key to life.
Since then I am always thinking of        is truly important in life. A home, a meal, clothes – these things are        part of the life. What we often forget is that we all need a joy, a light on a         day. We all need a passion which gives a person the happiness they need to keep going.
