When people want to know about the weather, they usually go to their radios, TVs, newspapers, or to the Internet. However, you can also find many weather signs among wildlife, because of their highly developed senses. Drops in air pressure produce an effect on small animals in many ways. Mice and deer are good weather indicators. People who spend a lot of time outdoors have observed that, before a storm, field mice come out of their holes and run around. Deer leave high ground and come down from the mountains. Birds are especially good weather indicators because they also show the effect of a pressure drop in many ways. For example, some birds become irritable(暴躁) and quarrelsome and will fight over a piece of bread. Other birds chirp and sing just before a storm. It seems they know they won’t get another chance for an hour or two. Birds also look for safe places before a storm. You will sometimes see birds settling in trees or gathering together on a wire close to a building. Pre-storm low pressure make the air so thin that birds have difficulty flying. It is unusual to see many birds flying overhead in the summertime, rather than during the periods in the spring or autumn. Watch for other weather signs if you see this. If they fly in the wrong direction, they may be flying ahead of a storm. By paying closer attention to some important signs in nature, we can become better prepared for any kind of weather. 小题1:The word “indicators” in paragraph 1 probably means .A.maps | B.services | C.signs | D.stations | 小题2:How can birds sense the coming of a storm?A.By feeling a drop in air temperature. | B.By noticing the change of wind directions. | C.By feeling a drop in air pressure. | D.By noticing the movements of other animals. | 小题3:The best title for the text would be .A.Signs of a Storm | B.Drops in Air Pressure | C.Animals’ Sharp Senses | D.Nature’s Weather Signs |

Children who spend more time reading with their parents have a greater chance of becoming better readers than those who don’t. With the help from their parents, children can learn techniques to improve their reading skills. “A lot of parents think after their child learns to read, they should stop reading to them,” Donna George said. “They are sadly mistaken.” George offers her services to parents at the Title I Learning Centers. She said reading aloud to children may be the most valuable thing parents can do. “It is better for children to hear things at a higher level than where they are,” George said. “Parents are their child’s first teacher.” Parents help their children build listening, phonics, comprehension and vocabulary skills when they read aloud to them. Before parents can identify reading problems, they should escape the enemy —television and limit the time their children spend watching television. George suggested not allowing kids to have a TV in their bedrooms, setting a schedule of when kids can watch or keeping a list of how many programs children watch. Louise Joines said while her 14-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son enjoy reading, the television sometimes becomes a distraction. So she tries to build the situation by suggesting books the entire family will enjoy reading together, like the Harry Potter series. Parents who do not read themselves should not count on their children being interested in it. If parents would read to their children at least 15 minutes every day, children would not have so many problems in school. It is the parents’ job to help build that desire in their children, and of course to know what kind of books to read is also important. 小题1:According to George, reading aloud to children_______________.A.helps them correct mistakes | B.is helpful to their reading | C.is parents’ first duty to their children | D.can get children out of television’s attraction | 小题2:The underlined word (in Paragraph 4 ) means something that_________A.can improve children’s reading | B.can help children’s right way of reading | C.can make children interested in reading | D.can make children not attentive | 小题3:Which of the following is important according to the fourth paragraph?A.Reading skills. | B.Reading speed. | C.Reading materials. | D.Reading environment. | 小题4:If the passage is not completed, which of the following can follow the fifth paragraph?A.Parents choose reading materials for their children. | B.Advice is given to control their children. | C.What TV programs children can watch during reading. | D.How children improve their reading by themselves. | 小题5: Which one would be the best title for the passage?A.Children Spend More Time Reading with Parents. | B.Parents Are Their Child"s First Teacher. | C.How Parents Make Their Child a Better Reader. | D.How to Improve Children"s Reading Ability. |

To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades, and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts, school is very different. Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want. There are no teachers, only “staff members (职员)”. The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway. “You do not need to say to a three-year-old. ‘Go explore your environment.’ You can’t stop them!” says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. “But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning.” At Sudbury Valley School, you will allow children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees, or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing! The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each — even the four-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget(预算), and even which staff they want and do not want any more. When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist. 小题1:What does the school believe?A.Teachers cannot teach children well. | B.Children learn best when they do what they want to do. | C.Learning is for adults — children should only play. | D.Children should only learn about one thing at a time. | 小题2:What does Daniel Greenberg say about three-year-olds?A.They love learning. | B.They are very naughty. | C.They want to be outside all the time. | D.They are too young to learn anything. | 小题3:What happens to the children after they leave this school?A.They do the same things as children from other schools. | B.They have problems getting into college or getting a job. | C.They usually do very unusual jobs. | D.They are not successful in their business. | 小题4:What is the main topic of the article?A.Children’s hobbies | B.Education in the US | C.A school without rules | D.An unusual school |
