If you watch the sky about an hour after the sun goes down, you may see some "moving stars". But they"re not real stars. They are man-made satellites. And the biggest of all is the International Space Station (ISS 国际空间站). From now until July is the best season to watch the ISS flying over the earth, and people can see it just with their eyes. The ISS is the biggest man-made satellite because scientists want to live on it. They think that the best way to learn more about space is to live there. When the space station is finished, it will be like a city in space. People will stay and study there with many of the things they have at home. Laboratories, living rooms and power stations are being built. The ISS is the most ambitious (雄心勃勃) and expensive space program ever. Billions of dollars are being spent on it every year. Scientists hope that the ISS will be a stepping-stone (垫脚石) for future space exploration."The ISS will help us better understand the human body, explore space and study the earth. It can help us make life on the earth better," said Kathryn Clark, an ISS scientist. China is not an ISS country, but it has helped with some of the experiments. China sent some rice up to the ISS to find out what space would do to it. The ISS is not finished yet. More than 100 parts need to be put on. Scientists hope it will be finished as soon as possible. After it"s finished, more than 90% of the world"s population will be able to see the Space Station. So keep looking up, and maybe you"ll see it get bigger. |

Recently, a solar powered (太阳能动力的) plane took to the sky for the first time. It had passed an important test on the way to travel around the world. The plane took off from an airport in Switzerland (瑞士) at 45km an hour. It slowly rose above the fields and into the sky. "There has never been an airplane of that kind that could fly - never an airplane so big, so light, using so little energy," said Bertrand Piccard, a leader of the project. During the 90-minute flight, the plane did several turns. It climbed nearly 1.6km above the countryside. Engineers plan to test a night flight before July. Then they will use the results of the tests to build a second plane. They plan to travel around the world in that plane in 2012. The plane flies at 70 km an hour. That is faster than a bike and slower than a car. Piccard and pilot Andre Borschberg will take the plane around the world. The pilots will keep the plane in the air for up to five days at a time. "We want to fly it day and night with no fuel (燃料)," Piccard said. |

Soon computers and other machines (机器) will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The program works because everyone"s eyes are different. So in the future you won"t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You"ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are. The eye-recognition (眼睛识别) program has already been tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon this technology (技术) will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are. However, scientists are also working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your finger. Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don"t change as you get older, and don"t get dirty like hands or fingers, and even twins have different eyes. So the eye-recognition program can be up to 94% correct, depending on how good the technology is. However, some other programs may only be 51% correct at present. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition. In the future your computer will be looking you in the eye. So smile! |
1. Where has the eye-recognition program already been tested in a few countries? In _______. |
A. shops and banks B. shops and schools C. banks and schools D. schools and hospitals |

A. your eyes or your smell B. your voice or the mark made by your finger C. your face or your voice D. your face or your hand |
4. Which of the following doesn"t belong to the advantages of the eye-recognition program? |
A. Your eyes don"t change as you get older. B. Eyes don"t get dirty like hands or fingers. C. Everyone"s eyes are different, even twins have different eyes. D. We can"t see anything without eyes. |
5. What problem could there be with the eye-recognition program? |
A. Some eyes are the same. B. Eyes can change. C. It is not always correct. D. Eyes can get dirty like hands. |

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably also sing or whistle when you are happy. Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory. Do you know what a "territory" is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims (宣称) as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species (物种) are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. (1) If a stranger should enter your territory and want to hurt you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away. If so, you have actually frightened the stranger away without having to fight him. (2)一只鸟也将会 做同样的事. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting (筑巢) season. So he is screaming (尖叫) all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird"s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away. Birds sing loudest in spring when they are trying to attract a mate (同伴) and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs. You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories. |
