E Paynes Prairie Have you ever heard of Paynes Prairie? It is one of the most important natural and historical areas in Florida. Paynes Prairie is located near Gainesville. It is large, 21 000 acres. This protected land is called a preserve. The Florida Park Service manage the preserve. The Paynes Prairie basin was formed when limestone dissolved and the ground settled. It is covered by marsh(沼泽)and wet prairie vegetation. There are areas of open water. During brief periods it has flooded enough to be considered a lake. Except for that, the basin has changed little through time. Man has lived on Paynes Prairie a very long time. He lived there as far back as 10000 B. C. At one time, the Seminoles lived there. The prairie is thought to have been named after King Payne, a Seminole chief. During the late 1600s, the largest cattle ranch in Florida was on Paynes Prairie. Today, Paynes Prairie is preserved land. It is occupied by visitors and Florida Park Service employees. William Bartram visited Paynes Praire. Bartram was the first person who described nature through personal experience as well as scientific observation. He lived 200 years ago. He visited Paynes Prairie in 1774. At that time he described it. He called Paynes Prairie the "great Alachua Savannah." Most of the animal life, which Bartram described, is still here. A large number of sand hill cranes, hawks and waterfowl are here in winter. The animal diversity is increased by the presence of pine flatwoods, hammock, swamps and ponds. The Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is open year round. The Florida Park Service works hard so that the park will appear as it did in the past. It offers many opportunities for recreation. At the park you can camp and picnic. You can hike and bike. You can boat and fish. You can ride on horse trails. And you can see lots of nature and wildlife. You can see Florida as it was in the early days. Paynes Prairie is a part of our Florida history. It is an example of our Florida natural resources. It is a place for recreation. Paynes Prairie is an important experience of the Real Florida. 57. How was the Paynes Prairie basin formed? A. By the Seminole Indians. B. By the Florida Park Service. C. B Taste is such a subjective matter that we don’t usually conduct preference tests for food. The most you can say about anyone’s preference is that it’s one person’s opinion. But because the two big cola companies-Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola-are marketed so aggressively, we’ve wondered how big a role taste preference actually plays in brand loyalty. We set up a taste test that challenged people who identified themselves as either Coca-cola or Pepsi fans: Find your brand in a blind tasting. We invited staff volunteers who had a strong liking for either Coca-Cola Classic or Pepsi, Diet Coke, or Diet Pepsi. These were people who thought they’d have no trouble telling their brand from the other brand. We eventually located 19 regular cola drinkers and 27 diet cola drinkers. Then we fed them with four unidentified samples of cola one at a time, regular colas for the one group, diet versions for the other. We asked them to tell us whether each sample was Coke or Pepsi; then we analyzed the records statistically to compare the participants’ choices with what mere guesswork could have accomplished. Getting all four samples right was a tough test, but not too tough, we thought, for people who believed they could recognize their brand. In the end, only 7 out of 19 regular cola drinkers correctly identified their brand of choice in all four trials. The diet-cola drinkers did a little worse-only 7 out of 27 identified all four samples correctly. Both groups did better than chance would predict, but nearly half the participants in each group made the wrong choice two or more times. Two people got all four samples wrong.Overall, half the participants did about as well on the last round of tasting as on the first, so tiredness, or taste burnout, was not a factor. Our preference test results suggest that only a few Pepsi participants and Coke fans may really be able to tell their favorite brand by taste and price. 41.According to the passage the preference test was conducted in order to ________. A.show that a person’s opinion about taste is mere guesswork B.compare the ability of the participants in choosing their drinks C.find out the role taste preference plays in a person’s drinking D.reveal which cola is more to the liking of the drinkers 42.The statistics recorded in the preference tests show that________. A.there is not much difference in taste between Coca-Cola and Pepsi B.few people had trouble telling Coca-Cola from Pepsi C.people’s tastes differ from one another D.Coca-Cola and Pepsi are people’s two most favorite drinks 43.It is implied in the first paragraph that________. A.the competition between the two colas is very strong B.blind tasting is necessary for identifying fans C.the purpose of taste test is to promote the sale of colas D.the improvement of quality is the chief concern of the two cola companies 44.The underlined word “burnout” here refers to the state of________. A.being seriously burnt in the skin B.being badly damaged by fire C.being unable to burn for lack of fuel D.being unable to function because of too much use 45.The author’s purpose in writing this passage is to________. A.emphasize that taste and price are closely related to each other B.recommend that blind tasting be introduced in the quality control of colas C.show that taste preference is highly subjective D.argue that taste testing is an important marketing strategy |
D A wallet that looks like a piece of newspaper, an atlas, or an express parcel receipt? Or a business card that looks like a notepad? No kidding. Bai Minghui, a Beijing-based designer, creates his artwork using Tyvek, a synthetic paper material which is difficult to tear, waterproof and, more importantly, totally recyclable. Born to a worker family in 1983 in Tangshan, Hebei Province, Bai worked as a graphic designer at a financial magazine in Beijing after graduating from Minzu University of China. In the spring of 2008, Bai visited an exhibition about Tyvek in Beijing"s 798 art zone, and then worked with the material, trying to bring his designs to life. The first thing that came into his mind was the paper wallet, a must-try handicraft assignment(手工作业)that most Chinese students do in elementary school. "A paper wallet is definitely more useful than a paper crane or frog," Bai told Beijing Review, smiling."At first, many people have no idea what it is, because it looks like a piece of newspaper or an express parcel receipt, and feels like real paper. But it"s hard to tear. "The completed, folded wallet is seamless, which creates so much fun for a designer. To be honest, I didn"t think about profits at all," he said. After months of research and development on printing and designing, the first generation of his paper wallet made a stunning debut(上市) in May 2008.The second generation, which offers a greater range of pattern options, was put on the market at the beginning of 2009. "You can have graffiti(涂鸦) or write down phone numbers on it, or paint whatever you like.I would like people to be able to use it easily," he said."I don"t want to do things without creative ideas. Now my focus is on how to create better design rather than the wallet itself." 51.In which order did Bai do the following things? a.create the paper wallet b.study in Minzu University c.work as a graphic designer d.visit an exhibition about Tyvek in Beijing A.cbad B.bcda C.cbda D.bcad 52.Which of the following words can best describe the designer? A.diligent B.creative C.friendly D.honest 53.Tyvek, a synthetic paper material, has the following characters EXCEPT ____. C.Most of the wallets that people use nowadays can be recycled. D.Most of the designers based in Beijing have tried Tyvek to create their own work of art. |
China is having such a huge influence on the United States that many Americans are struggling to learn the Chinese language in a bid to keep competitive. "Interest in learning Chinese among American youth and their parents has grown quickly in the past five years," said Vivien Stewart, vice president at the Asia Society. China"s quick rise to near-superpower and its effects politically, economically and culturally are driving the American"s interest to learn the language, experts say. From kindergartens to high schools, studies by the Asia Society show, there is a "rapid rise" in interest among pupils to study the Chinese language. "The Chinese rich cultural traditions and blossoming economy mean that it is now important for all of our students to be better prepared," said Michael Levine, Asia Society"s executive director of education. A survey found that 2,400 high students—an unbelievable high number—would be interested in offering the Advanced Placement(AP) courses in Chinese language and culture when the courses become available in 2006. China, the world"s most populous nation, is important to the United States because it is a leading trader, consumer and investor. Its political influence is also rising across the world. It has replaced the United States as the world"s largest consumer and could become the second largest economy in the world, after the United States, in the next two to three decades. Even though the US State Department has described the Chinese language "critical" to national prosperity and security, "the current facilities to support recruitment (招募)of students and teachers as well as the growth of high quality programs is terribly not enough," an Asia Society study says. The Society has set an aim of having at least five percent of American high school students learning Chinese by 2015. "Millions of Chinese are learning English, but only 24,000 Americans are learning Chinese," said Andrew Corcoran of the San Francisco-based Chinese American International School. The most popular languages after English in US schools at present are Spanish and French while Japanese is the most popular Asian language. 53. The underlined word blossoming (Para. 3) means _________. A. developed B. developing C. old D. weak 54. Why do more and more Americans begin to learn the Chinese language? A. To keep competitive. B. To gain advantage in trade. C. Because they are always interested in it. D. To be a bridge between the two big countries. 55. What problem is the US faced with when it comes to learning Chinese? A. Too many Chinese are learning English. B. Not many people want to learn foreign languages. C. The language is rather difficult compared with English. D. A lack in current facilities to support recruitment of students and teachers and programs. 56. What is the best title for this passage? A. Danger from China B. Foreign Language Learning C. The Chinese Language gets More Popular D. Difficulties in Learning the Chinese Language |
B Laws that would have ensured pupils from five to 16 received a full financial education got lost in the ‘wash up’. An application is calling on the next government to bring it back. At school the children are taught to add up and subtract(减法) but, extraordinarily, are not routinely shown how to open a bank account — let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world. Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial education a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from five to 16 should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the Children, Schools and Families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called “wash-up” earlier this month — the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed. Consumer and parent groups believe financial education has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum. As the Personal Finance Education Group (Pfeg) points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven- to 11-year-olds are savers but by the time they get to 17, over half of them are in debt to family and friends. By this age, 26% see a credit card or overdraft(透支) as a way of extending their spending power. Pfeg predicts that these young people will “find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befallen many of their parents" generation unless they receive good quality financial education while at school.” The UK has been in the worst financial recession(衰退)for generations. It does seem odd that — unless parents step in — young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents. 61. The passage is mainly about _____________. A. how to manage school lessons B. how to deal with the financial crisis C. teaching young people about money D. teaching students how to study effectively 62. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that __________. A. the author complains about the school education B. pupils should not be taught to add up and subtract C. students have been taught to manage their finances D. laws on financial education have been effectively carried out 63. The website and the consumer campaigner joined to _________. A. instruct the pupils to donate their pocket money B. promote the connection of schools and families C. ask the government to dismiss the parliament D. appeal for the curriculum of financial education 64. According to Pfeg, ___________. A. it is easy to keep good habits long B. teenagers spend their money as planned C. parents are willing to pay the debt for their kids D. it will be in trouble if the teenagers are left alone 65. A poll is mentioned to ___________. A. stress the necessity of the curriculum reform B. show the seriousness of the financial recession C. make the readers aware of burden of the parents D. illustrate some people are strongly against the proposal |
C Imagine a world 400 years ago where children were used as chimney sweeps. The pay was low, it was a dirty trade and there was little reward for the men who did the job and even less for children. Medway’s annual Sweeps Festival recreates the joy and laughter enjoyed by the chimney sweeps at their traditional holiday: the one time of the year the sweeps could leave the soot(烟灰) behind and have some fun. The sweeps’ holiday was traditionally held on 1 May each year. Locally, they used to mark the occasion by staging a procession through the streets of Rochester. Their fun continued with the Jack-in-the-Green ceremony, a seven-foot character that they used to waken at dawn on Blue Bell Hill, Chatham. The Jack-in-the-Green would walk with the chimney sweeps in their parade. When the Climbing Boys’ Act 1868 made it illegal to employ young boys to carry out the trade, the traditional procession gradually began to fade. The final May celebration was held in the early 1900s. The modern day Rochester Sweeps Festival is a colorful mix of music, dancing and entertainment with more than 60 Morris sides and entertainers celebrating throughout the three-day festival. The festival was revived in 1981 by local businessman Gordon Newton, a keen historian. He decided it was time to bring it back and over the years he has helped develop the festival into what it is today — an excellent performance of traditional Britain. Gordon researched the Sweeps’ tradition and organized a small parade, involving local Morris teams. In time, Medway Council took over organization of the festival but Gordon remained actively involved. Today he is festival producer and plays melodeon(簧风琴) for several Morris teams. Doug Hudson is the festival’s music director, a role he has held for many years. Through Gordon’s vision and hard work, Doug’s musical ability and the council’s help, the Rochester Sweeps Festival has become the largest May Day celebration of its kind in the country. 66. According to the writer, chimney sweeps ____________. A. were highly respected B. were well rewarded C. led a hard life in the past D. worked in good conditions 67. Medway’s Sweeps Festival ____________. A. has been organized by the Jack-in-the-Green B. dated back to the May celebration in the early 1900s C. is held to honor those chimney sweeps every other year D. has become a time for chimney sweeps to enjoy themselves 68. The underlined word “revive” in the 4th paragraph most probably means ___________. A. realize B. review C. recreate D. recognize 69. It can be inferred from the passage that ____________. A. the festival has never been supported by the local government B. The festival is a good way to see British folk customs in action C. youngsters has been forbidden to be chimney sweeps since 1981 D. the modern festival lasts five days celebrating the coming of spring 70. What is the passage mainly concerned about? A. Sweeps Festival history B. Medway’s traditional holidays C. Climbing Boys’ Act 1868 D. a procession in Rochester |
