When a rare disease ALD threatened to kill the four-year-old boy Lorenzo, his parents refused to give up hope. Doctors explained that there was no cure for ALD, and that he would probably die within three years. But Lorenzo’s parents set out to prove the doctors wrong. The parents devoted themselves to keeping their son alive and searching for a cure. But doctors and the families of other ALD patients often refused to take them seriously. They thought the efforts to find a cure were a waste of time, and drug companies weren’t interested in supporting research into such a rare disease. However, the parents still refused to give up and spent every available hour in medical libraries and talking to anyone who would help. Through trial and error, they finally created a cure from ingredients (调料) commonly found in the kitchen. The cure, named "Lorenzo’s Oil", saved the boy’s life. Despite the good results, scientists and doctors remained unconvinced. They said there was no real evidence that the oil worked and that the treatment was just a theory. As a result, some families with ALD children were reluctant to try it. Finally, the boy’s father organized an international study to test the oil. After ten years of trials, the answer is: the oil keeps ALD children healthy. 小题1:Doctors said that Lorenzo might die within three years because_____ .A.they had never treated the disease before | B.Lorenzo was too young to be cured | C.no cure had been found for ALD | D.ALD was a rare disease | 小题2:The families of other ALD patients thought that _____ .A.the research for the new cure would cost too much money | B.the efforts of Lorenzo’s parents were a waste of time | C.Lorenzo’s parents would succeed in finding a cure | D.Lorenzo’s oil was a real cure for ALD | 小题3: Scientists and doctors believed that Lorenzo’s Oil_____.A.was really effective | B.was a success story | C.only worked in theory | D.would save the boy’s life | 小题4: From the passage we can conclude that_____.A.doctors remain doubtful of the effectiveness of the cure | B.many ALD patients still refuse to use the oil | C.various cures have been found for ALD | D.the oil really works as a cure for ALD |

“I didn’t hear them call my name,” explained Shelley Hennig to Active Teens (AT) as she talked about that exciting moment on national television when she won the honor of Miss Teen USA 2013. “Are you ready?” is what she heard. Then she said, “I shook my head no, and then they said ‘yes’ and it was announced again." It was four days after that life changing moment for the seventeen-year-old high school student from Destrehan, Louisiana—she was still on cloud nine. “I was so shocked! I never believed that it could actually really happen.” Present in the audience(观众)that day were: her mother and father, older brother, her friends, and her dance teacher. Understanding why members of her family and her friends would be there, AT asked why her dance teacher had traveled so far to see her compete. “She’s always been my role model. I’ve danced with her since I was six. She’s been through so many difficulties and came through them all. I’ve learned to get over bad life’s experiences and learned how to move on because of her.” One of those bad life’s experiences for Shelley happened three years ago when her brother Brad was killed in a drunk driving accident. He was 18. She found writing helped her get through the rough days. She said, “I write a lot about my brother. I write a lot, a lot, a lot...” As Miss Louisiana Teen, she traveled around the state speaking to teens about the dangers of drinking and driving. In her role as Miss Teen USA, Shelley will continue to speak to youth about safe driving, in addition to many other things to help the youth. When AT asked Miss Teen USA if she had any advice for our readers, she said, “Don’t let anyone change you. Hang out with people that make you feel good about yourself. That way, it is easy to be yourself. 小题1:The underlined words “on cloud nine” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by ________.A.frightened | B.troubled | C.very happy | D.very angry | 小题2:Shelley takes her dance teacher as a role model mainly because she is _______.A.determined | B.friendly | C.strict | D.experienced | 小题3:What did Shelley often do after she became Miss Louisiana Teen?A.She visited drunken drivers. | B.She gave dance performance. | C.She made speeches on safe driving. | D.She helped other teens with their studies. | 小题4:What suggestion does Shelley give to the teens?A.Be yourself with the support of friends. | B.Meet friends whenever possible. | C.Go easy on yourself and others. | D.Have a good role model. |

“Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy – they’re given after all. Choices can be hard.” –– Jeff Bezos. I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I’d been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor. I’d always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion. I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn’t already have a good job.” That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but ultimately (最后), I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all. After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices. 小题1:What inspired the author with the idea of building an online bookstore?A.His dream of being an inventor. | B.The support of his wife. | C.The greatly increasing usage of the Internet. | D.Millions of exciting titles. | 小题2:Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?A.The idea of not trying would keep coming to his mind and disturb him. | B.He would be very excited if he tried it out. | C.He would be always having a doubt if he didn’t try. | D.The decision to not try the online bookstore would terrify him. | 小题3:We can know from the passage that _______.A.the boss thought the idea was suitable for the author | B.the author wanted someone else to try the idea | C.the author might not regret if he failed the idea | D.the author might go back to his boss if he failed | 小题4:Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A.Cleverness and Kindness | B.The Starting of Amazon | C.Following My Passion | D.We Are What We Choose |

There are two things I can count on my dad asking every time he calls me: “Is there anything I can do for you?” and “How’s the car?” I guess he asks what he can do for me because his dad (an air force officer) was never really there for him, and he’s determined to provide me with the support he lacked. During my youth he never missed a school play or softball game. In fact, he was so supportive that I sometimes longed for one of those dads who dressed better and cared less. But my dad would forever be the guy wearing shorts with dress shoes and black socks, cheering me on, expecting greatness. His other standard question—How’s the car? -- used to strike me as a waste of long-distance dollars from a man who once suggested making a list of what you want to talk about before calling someone out of state. What I now realize is that “How’s the car?” is not about the car. It’s a father’s way of asking his adult daughter how she is doing. The advantage is that if there’s something wrong with the car, he knows what to do about it and how much it will cost, whereas if you’re having problems about marriage or doubting a career choice, he might have to act Mom on the line. At age thirty I finally took the plunge(跳进) into adulthood by renting a car without my dad’s help or advice. I’m sure my dad was hurt rather than proud. Though a daughter’s independence is evidence of a job well done, it still implies the job’s done, and many fathers are unwilling to retire. Even when my dad was overworked, he’d happily jump on a plane if I said I needed help. His frequent question “Is there anything I can do for you?” underlines the fact that he wishes there was still something he could provide. It’s interesting: Even though we’re tied by blood and I love him no matter what, he still seems to need a concrete function -- suggesting stocks, finding the cheapest plane fare -- to feel he has a role in my life. 小题1:In the author’s opinion, her father always attended her school plays or softball games to_____.A.satisfy any demand she made to him | B.show his interest and watch them for fun | C.make up what he was previously short of | D.expect his daughter would be great in games | 小题2:The author has learned that by asking “How is the car?”, her father is actually_____.A.reminding her not to waste money | B.asking how his daughter is getting along | C.expressing his concern for her daughter’s safety | D.asking his daughter if the car breaks down or not | 小题3:According to the author, her father, like many other fathers, is unwilling to retire probably because_____.A.he wants to continue to earn money | B.he is doubtful of children’s independence | C.he won’t put an end to caring for his children | D.he is afraid of losing connection with children | 小题4:We can safely draw a conclusion from the story that in the author’s eye her father_____.A.has a strong passion for his work | B.has the deepest love for his children | C.has great interest in his daughter’s car | D.has too much control over his children |
