Once my mother told me a story that in Africa, when an antelope (羚羊) wakes up every morning, the first thing it thinks about is, “I must be 36 to run faster than the fastest lion, or I will be killed.” 37 , a lion wakes from his dream. The first thing the lion thinks about is, “I must be able to catch the 38 antelope, or I will starve to 39 .” So almost simultaneously(同时地), the antelope and the lion get up and start running toward the 40 sun. This is 41 : full of chances and challenges. Whether you are an antelope or a lion, you must go 42 when the sun rises. For students, it is just the same. If we don’t study hard, sooner or later, we will 43 the other students. At first I didn’t know what the word “exam” 44 . Later, I knew an exam was a kind of 45 . In competitions, there are always winners and 46 . As I grew up, I got to know competition well. In one’s life, there must be competitions, so people can 47 . Each time I saw children playing games and heard their 48 , I wished I were that age again. 49 , I remembered my parents’ words: You must work very hard for a good future. So I 50 my pen and began to study hard again. I was still not sure what competition 51 meant. One day, I was 52_in an English-speaking competition. When I went to the stage, I saw other students looking at me kindly. Suddenly I 53 what competition was. It is not as cruel as my teacher and parents told me. Play is the basic business of childhood, and in recent years more and more research has shown the great importance of play in the development of a human being. From earliest infancy (婴儿), every child needs opportunity and the right material for play, and the main tools of play are toys. The main function of toys is to suggest, encourage and assist play. To succeed in this, they must be good toys, which children will play with often and will come back to again and again. Therefore, it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a child’s development. In recent years research on infant development has shown that the standard a child is likely to reach, within the range of his inherited(遗传的) abilities, is largely determined in the first three years of his life. So a baby"s ability to benefit from the right play materials should not be underestimated. A baby who is encouraged, talked to and shown things and played with, has the best chance of growing up successfully. The next stage, from three to five years old, curiosity knows no bounds. Every type of suitable toy should be made available to the child, for trying out, experimenting and learning, for discovering his own particular ability. Bricks and jigsaws and construction toys; painting, scribbling(乱涂) and making things; sand and water play; toys for imaginative and pretending play; the first social games for learning to play and get on with others. By the third stage of play development—from five to seven or eight years old— the child is at school. But for a few more years play is still the best way of learning, at home or at school. It is easier to see which type of toys the child most enjoys. Until the age of seven or eight, play and work mean much the same to a child. But once reading has been mastered, then books and school become the main source of learning. Toys are still interesting and valuable, which lead up to new hobbies, but their significance has changed —to a child of nine or ten years old, toys and games mean, as to adults, relaxation and fun. 小题1:The writer wants us to understand that a child_______.A.cannot grow up without toys | B.matures(使成熟) through play | C.uses toys as friends | D.has to be taught how to play | 小题2:According to the passage, the abilities a child has inherited from his parents ________.A.determine his character | B.will not change after the age of three | C.partly determine the standard he is likely to reach | D.to a large extent determine the choice of toys | 小题3:The passage tells us that children are the most curious when they are about______.A.two years old | B.one year old | C.six years old | D.four years old | 小题4:The article is about_______.A.the importance of play | B.the importance of books | C.the relationship between play and work | D.children’s speech development |

Whenever my dog, Barney, comes into the house after having been for a ride in the car, he runs to the pen(围栏) we have set up for him by the back door. It’s not something we intentionally trained him to do. The habit came simply because my husband tended to put him in his pen whenever they came in. After doing it a few times, Barney just figures that’s what you do when you come inside after a car ride. It’s the same with your thinking. You get into the habit of thinking a certain way and then you’ll rarely question it after that. This is especially true when you were growing up. You developed habits that just made things easier for you. You probably didn’t even think about them. That’s just the way it was and that’s what you did. Just like Barney thinks he has to go into his pen, you do things automatically as well. For example, when you were a kid, you may have been told not to “talk back” and to just keep quiet about things that were bothering you. These are habits that might have worked to keep you safe and out of trouble when you were young. Now that you"re grown up, you may be finding that these previous strategies are actually causing you problems. In a relationship, not communicating isn"t going to work as your partner can’t read your mind. What works when you"re a child may not work when you become an adult. When you decide you need to change your thoughts, your brain may at first feel that it"s not a safe thing to do. Lots of practice and years of experience says it’s not. Also, you don’t know to question the thought. It’s a truth for you. The trick is to look at your results and see if your thoughts are the cause. Be willing to question your thinking and ask yourself if there are thoughts that are hindering (妨碍) you. As you are now in a different phase of your life, different strategies may be needed. 小题1:As with the dog Barney, people _______.A.think in a habitual way | B.enjoy having a car ride | C.usually behave in a friendly way | D.have a good memory | 小题2:According to the passage, as a kid, one tends to _________.A.be afraid to make mistakes | B.have the experience of playing with a dog | C.learn much from adults like his/her parents | D.form a habit which can keep his/her out of trouble | 小题3:In the writer’s opinion, adults should _______.A.not“talk back” | B.avoid causing any problem | C.change the habit which will bring troubles | D.value their habits formed in their childhood | 小题4:It can be concluded from the passage that ________.A.the author’s husband must be good at training dogs | B.childhood is the best time for developing good habits | C.one can change his/her life by changing his/her thoughts | D.you should change all your childhood habits when you grow up |

Every day we go to school and listen to teachers, and the teacher will ask us some questions. Sometimes, the classmates will ask your opinions of the work of the class. When you are telling others in the class what you have found out about these topics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You are not taking part in a family conversation or having a chat with friends --- you are in a situation where a large group of people will remain silent, waiting to hear what you have to say. You must speak so that they can hear you loudly enough and clearly enough but without trying to shout or appearing to force yourself. Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official who might meet you. The person you are seeing will try to put you at your ease in ordinary conversation but the situation is somewhat different from that of an ordinary conversation. You must take special care that you can be heard. 小题1:When you speak to the class, you should speak __________.A.as loudly as possible | B.in a low voice | C.loudly | D.forcefully | 小题2:The situation in the class is _________ that in your house.A.not very different from | B.sometimes the same as | C.sometimes not the same as | D.not the same as | 小题3:If you are having a conversation with an official, the most important thing for you is _____________.A.to show your ability | B.to be very gentle | C.to make sure that you can be heard | D.to put the official at ease | 小题4:The main idea of this passage is __________.A.that we must use different ways at different situations | B.that we must speak loudly | C.that we must keep silent at any time | D.that we must talk with the class |

All parents know that one of their most important tasks is to prepare their children for an independent life, but any parent can tell you that it’s hard to let go of your children. That balance between keeping your children safe and allowing them to learn from their own mistakes can be heartbreaking. Years of experience means that parents often do know best, but on the other hand, the young, being less bound by tradition, are often more creative, more able to find new solutions to old problems. Revolutions are led by the young. Good teachers make the growth of critical (批判性的) thinking easier in their students, only to find that this can lead to a questioning of the teachers’ basic beliefs. Schools encourage parents to become involved, but are often embarrassed when parents have reservations about some of the educational methods being used. Governments encourage unimportant groups to empower themselves in order to participate fully in the development process. And they are often surprised when the new leaders of these groups turn around and attack the policies of that same government. The rebellions (叛逆的)young and the newly unimportant groups are important in social development. They are not necessarily representatives of those they want to represent or not realistic in their demands, but their voices must be heard. Good parents know that just forbidding particular behaviors does not prevent their children from finding ways to engage in these forbidden activities. Indeed, sometimes the forbidden fruit is more inviting, just because it is not accepted by authority. Parents must work with their children to educate them on the facts, know as much as possible about he lives of their children, provide a good example, encourage more wholesome activities but also support their children when they don’t follow what is expected of them. But the most important point is that they also need to learn how to let go. 小题1:By saying “Revolutions are led by the young”, the author indicates that young people are more .A.conventional | B.realistic | C.creative | D.heartbreaking | 小题2:From the second paragraph we know .A.teachers’ basic beliefs should be questioned by students | B.schools encourage parents to question their education methods | C.movement is satisfied with the new leaders’ attack on the policies | D.the voice of the rebellious young should be heard by the government | 小题3:In order to educate children well, parents should .A.forbid particular behaviors in their daily life | B.know them well and set a good example to them | C.educate them with facts and expect much of them | D.know as much as possible as their children | 小题4:From the passage we can learn that the author prefers .A.free parenting | B.traditional parenting | C.critical parenting | D.smart parenting | 小题5:What is the best title of the passage?A.Letting Go – for Children’s Independent Life | B.Parents’ Tasks – in Children’s Development | C.Way of Growth – for the Young Groups | D.Teaching Methods – for Teachers and Schools |
